  1. This probably won't happen so it's a complete hypothetical, but if Viney wielded the axe to the leadership group, who would you like to see in the new one?

    Personally,

Frawley - a backline leader, no doubt

Jamar - he knows what it takes to work hard to achieve goals

Sylvia - good at directing people and organising forward line movement

Jones (captain)- leads by example, his strength is his effort and this can't deteriorate with extra responsibility

Moloney (VC)- hard at the ball (most of the time) and seems to love the club

A good article by Lethal which goes some way holding our insipid leadership group to account. Trengove should be made Captain as of next year with support from Grimes, Frawley and Jones. Our over 25 group is quite possibly the most pathetic in the AFL.

  2. Just interested at the role Lyon is playing in all of this. He was one of the blokes who appointed Bailey, and clearly jumped off the bandwagon last year. Longstanding mate of Connolly and Schwab - where does he stand with them??

  3. As many of you on Demonland will know, I have had a long association with Liam Jurrah, his family and the wider community of Yuendumu, going back to 2002.

Anyway, after being pestered by many people, I finally decided to write a book about Liam's journey from a teenage desert footballer to an emerging AFL star.

The book, 'The Liam Jurrah Story: From Yuendumu to the MCG' will be published by Melbourne University Publishing and released on 1 August.

I know Liam is much loved by most Dees supporters, so you should all find it a fascinating and enjoyable read, enabling you to learn a little about Warlpiri culture along the way. you will also get some insight into the enormous hurdles and obstacles Liam has had to overcome to get to where he is today.

It also explains - for the first time - the full story of how and why Liam got drafted by the Dees and why Collingwood missed out!

Just finished reading the book, Rudeboy! Well done! It's a fantastic read and a fascinating story. Who will play you in the movie?

  4. Why WD so we can continue the trend of the last 40 years!

We have a team of well skilled players who can only beat the bottom half dozen sides

but not get closer than 8 -10 goals of anyone who is half decent.

Either the team is not as good as we think or we are poorly coached.

Old, I'm as frustrated as you, but I am also a realist. In Bailey's first two seasons he was under riding instructions to bottom out. He followed this direction faithfully to the detriment of his overall win - loss record. In essence, I believe he can only be judged on 2010 and 2011. Last year, I believe we were very competitive and showed some genuine improvement. This year has had it's moments yet I believe there are genuine signs of a developing, sustainable game plan. We were badly hurt by injuries and suspension after the Adelaide game and the next three weeks we struggled accordingly. Our performances have been inconsistent, but if you look at Hawthorn, for example in Clarkson's first two seasons, the Hawks won 5 games in 2005 (14th) and 9 in 2006 (11th). This was when they had already added Franklin and Roughead at the 2004 draft. I'd consider us to be tracking about the same as Hawthorn, if not a little better if you consider Bailey didn't really start coaching us to win until 2010. 8.5 wins last year and 12th spot, if we can get to 10.5 this year then I'd reappoint him. It's really all in his (and the players) hands!

  5. Funny you say this as I sit watching the game ( cats v westies ) with bro in law a staunch Filth from a big tribe of filth and they dont particularly rate Mouse, reckoning its nore his entourage and the facilities that brought success to bear more than just Mick.Thats all debatable but im not sold hes the answer to all problems either. A PR coup indeed it'd be but sound thinking ??? all a bit suss.

I'm not sure what to make of Malthouse's record myself. He had one finals appearance at Footscray with a team which had a lot of capable players but was unfinancial. After 6 years he left with a 50% winning record and the Doggies facing a merger with Fitzroy. He moved to the Eagles where the ground work had already been laid in terms of the recruiting concessions and clever drafting late like Kemp. 2 flags in 10 years and finals every year is a big tick irrespective of the financial support and resourcing. He has basically had 2 bites of the cherry at the filth- from 2000-2004, from last to GF aand down again, and 2005 - present, which started with the tanking that landed Thomas and Pendlebury and ended with a flag. The most well resourced footy department in AFL history and 11 years for one flag. I'm thinking stick with Bailey.

  6. I do wonder, why if GWS are apparently chasing Scully, have they not made a hard approach at him like they have with Ward? Because even if Scully is not interested in talking contracts until the end of the year, it doesn't stop them from giving him or his managers one to look at, and according to sources I actually believe, they are yet to do so.

Just wondering if they really are as interested in him as the media appears to make out, or whether it's all smoke screens and distractions to try and steal other players (be it ours or another club's).

Besides, a player who is leaning towards a move away from their current club wouldn't really care that much about contracts distracting him from his footy, would he?

As I have stated previously I don't believe TS is going to GWS. From a recruiting point of view it makes much more sense to go after bigger bodied players. They will pick up plenty of physically underdeveloped but very talented players at this years draft. They need to complement that arrangement with some plug and play midfield talent. Scully is not a physically imposing player, like for instance Palmer and Rich and it makes far more sense that they would be the type of players they would be targetting for next year. When Sheedy was reported as saying a couple of weeks back that they already had the midfielder they were after, I think it is more likely he was referring to either or both of those. If I was recruiting for GWS I'd be far more interested in Sylvia than Scully for 2012.

  7. The "whisper" is that Scully not happy with direction of club.I am wondering exactly what about the 'direction' is being referred to. Is it about the coach, is it a rumour is it baseless. At the end of the day, supporting the Dees is a victory of faith. When I see what belief Jimmy Stynes has instilled into the club combined with our great playing list I have great confidence in our direction. We have other clubs seeking to mimic our debt demolition strategy: Footscray, Port Adelaide, Richmond, but can they emulate what we achieved? When Grimes, Tapscott, Jamar, Bail and Davey are fit, whose place do they take? That is the true picture of where we are at.

Whilst I can't say for sure that Tom won't go to GWS, what I do know is that the direction of the club is not an issue for Tom. Nor is the Coach or mid field coach ,both of whom he speaks extremely highly of according to people who should know. He has many mates at the club, being especially close to Nathan Jones, amongst others. Based on the conversations I have had with people who have known Tom for a long time, since Narre Warren days, I have always been confident he will stay. No amount of media beat up since has swayed me from that view.

  8. Met a friend for dinner tonight. His theory, supported by a friend of his close to the club, is that Scully wants out of Melbourne. Problem being he's not that keen on GWS. Theory is he might take a 2 or 3 year gig up there (cash bonanza) before making his way back to a bigger more professional club such as collingwood, carlton or maybe even richmond.

Make of it what you will as it ain't gospel.

Wouldn't be the first time this has happened. Greg Williams left Geelong after 2 seasons to take the Doc's cash in Sydney and the came back down to Vic to play with Carlton, score another Brownlow and achieve the finals success that had eluded him at both Geelong and Sydney.

  9. Someone quotes this on another site and I thought it was worth re reading again.

    From the press conference;

"I love the club, I love my teammates and I want to be part of the future going ahead at the Melbourne Football Club. I'm sure my teammates have full trust in me."

"There has been no approach, absolutely not. And I definitely haven't spoken to GWS and most certainly haven't signed anything, certainly not. If I did have an approach the club would be the first to know. I have been transparent with the club."

"I want to repay the club for showing faith in me. They have been very understanding and me and Dean (Bailey) have a great relationship," said Scully.

"I'm a contracted Melbourne player and I'm absolutely loving my time at the club. I want to get the best outcome for the Melbourne footy club.

"I have full confidence the club and my management will work through the contract in due course."

"I'd love to end my career and say I was a one-club player and I anticipate that will be the case,"

And that is about all that needs to be said. Have a bit of faith in the young bloke.

  10. I think this is a reasonable question. Jamar for mine in the short term (2 years), then I believe Trengove is the most natural leader on our list. He absolutely has a crack every week, he is articulate and presents exceptionally well to the media, even when under immense pressure ( just look at his efforts last week!) and clearly has the respect of his team mates. He would be 21-22 in a couple of years and I don't think that is too early assuming his career trajectory continues on its present path.

  11. Good point. In similar situations in the past, leadership was given to players in their early 20s like David Dench & Wayne Carey (there must have been others, these are just the only ones I can think of off the top of my head), over and above older teammates who weren't as good. And at the moment, it's the older group who need to shoulder the load but who aren't.

Yep, Dench and Carey are good examples, as are Neale Daniher at Essendon (he was 21 but never got to lead them because of his knee injuries). Kernahan was in his second season at Carlton when he got the job - he had played 25 games although had played quite a few with Glenelg. He was 23. Greg Healy was 22 when he took over from Robbie Flower and Garry Lyon would have been 23 when he got the job in 1991. Of the better Captains I have seen Terry Daniher was 25 when he took over at the Bombers, Voss was in his very early 20's when appointed co-captain at Brisbane, Hird was 24. Most of these guys had already proven themselves great players before they took on the role, many became even better after they got it. For mine, Trengove has leadership written all over him. Is it too early for the club to give it to him? If so, then maybe Jamar for a year or 2. The current leadership group (with the exception of Grimes) all come up short for various reasons.

  12. My god! If you were to take this website as gospel, you would assume that every player is useless. The truth is, even in a team that loses every single game, 1-2 players at least, are having great seasons. Brent Moloney is one of them. He worked extremely hard today and you can't ask much more than that. He was beaten and Swallow did a good job tagging him but he wasn't overly damaging himself.

Ah well, what can you do - anyway, who's next??

Never said he was useless, I said he was a flat-track bully. Argue with this if you like:

V Sydney 27 disposals; V Hawthorn 17 disposals; VBrisbane 36 disposals; V GC 32 disposals; V WCE 18 disposals; VAdelaide 31 disposals; V NM 16 disposals. Real leaders stand up against the tide. He is what he is - a solid foot soldier.

  13. Brent Moloney, every day of the week.

Moloney is a flat-track bully, I'm afraid. He has beaten up on the juvenile midfields with Jamar pushing it down his throat, but in our three worst efforts for the year (Hawthorn, WCE and today) he has been AWOL. Swallow spanked him today!

  14. Can't help but think it's less about our recruiting and more about our development coaching. Just about everyone had Watts as the best player in his group. There was consensus amongst all clubs that Morton was in the top three players in his draft year (according to Emma Quayle many had him at 1!). Grimes was a good get at 14. We haven't had a chance to judge Blease yet, but most thought him a steal at 17. Strauss was a bit of a smoky at 19 and things don't look good there yet. Scully and Trengove have certainly shown enough to justify their rating irrespective of how well Martin is performing. I think all clubs had them at 1 and 2 and rightly so. Whether or not we were right to overlook Darling will be determined by how well we develop Cook. The boy can play - the question is how quickly we can bring him on. Anything beyond the third round is largely speculative and where a recruiter really makes his name - Swan in the late 50's, Lake in the 70's etc. Development is the key!

By the way, I agree that Darling was an obvious choice not withstanding his "Character" issues. Maybe we pay too much heed to that - if Carlton had adopted the same philosophy in the early 80's they would never have won a game. I'm sure they wouldn't trade their back to back flags for a choir boy reputation.

  15. I was thinking that it feels like he's been around forever, then when I checked it out, it would seem that he has - this is year number 9 10 on the list. Only Green has been on the list longer.

It's got to have been the slowest buildup of all time but it's definitely been worth the wait. Well done Russian.

Absolutely amazed he isn't at least in the official leadership group. The way he has played the last 18 months he has Captain written all over him! A true "heart and soul" player if ever there was one!

  16. It was a great season indeed BUT how did we lose to North Melbourne by 127 pts at the'G"? In an earlier round we had beaten them by 57 points also at the 'G'. My memory bank has conveniently erased memories of our huge loss. Did we have a large injury list or what? Anyone care to refresh my memory. One thing for sure, that thrashing killed our % and precluded us from finishing any higher than 4th.

No we had a strong side in. Final score was NM 31.14 200 to Melb 10.13.73. Our leading goal kicker was Full Back Danny Hughes with 2!! Horse Longmire kicked 14 goals for North. Before that game our percentage was 119.3%. After it was 106.9%.

We finished equal on points with Collingwood and WCE (64) but our percentages were Coll 130.2; WCE 118.4 and Melb 113.2. No doubt that loss cost us the double chance. We had beaten Hawthorn (twice including the EF), Essendon (twice) and WCE (twice but not in the semi).

  17. Tom doesn't drink, but I don't claim that he's prudish or that he's overly concerned by the drinking culture (although I do believe that he thinks the drinking is excessive). And I'm not suggesting that he doesn't love the Dees, because I've been told that he's very happy. What I'm saying is that he cut short his trip to China not only because of a family illness, but also because he didn't enjoy the environment, which was in part the excessive drinking.

I feel like I need to spoon feed you every granule of information for you to completely understand what's intended. Improve your cognitive abilities.

Not sure either re Tom's views on the drinking culture, but I do know Tom's ex girlfriend very well. A Narre Warren girl who went to the school I work at told me last year that Tom broke it off with her because she was too "hard living" for him!! She said of him "Great guy but way too straight!"

  18. A really interesting insight from the guy accountable for the decision. Particularly intesting in that they expected him to be available at 19. Obviously not as highly rated by (any) others. I wonder what the reasons were for that? The other issue this raises is the role of our development coaches. BP is adamant the draftees have all of the ingredients - does the problem lie with our "chefs"? Not counting Blease amongst this for obvious reasons, but both Strauss and Watts have not come on yet as could be reasonably expected.
