We are losing contested centre clearances. This is killing us. Combine this with turnovers and we are naturally looking like an average team.

According to current orthodoxy that doesn’t matter

70% of scoring is from turnovers

so a dump kick clearance gets easily converted into a forward entry

I’m uncomfortable with giving up on clearances but can’t fault the logic

I guess it depends on the quality of the clearance

@titan_uranus No, I do agree our midfield is down on previous years, at least in terms of looking at them individually.

But we lost gus in the eve of the finals. And clarry, whilst performing remarkably well given his interrupted preseasons, is not yet back to his best.

And it didn't help losing Bowser in round one, which meant salo had to go back.

Nor did it help salo also getting injured.

Against that viney has been terrific, ditto tracc and Max.

What I have been arguing is that the midfield isn't really a significant issue for us. The forward line is a much better issue.

Midfields are simply not as important as they were even two seasons ago.

Scores from clearances were something 60-70% of total score when goody took over as coach.

It's now only 20-30%, with scores from turnover being the main score source.

I mean you only have to look at the game we just played.

Seven years ago if we were plus 21 for scores from stoppages we win most games.

Not now, particularly when our opponents absolutely smash us on scores from turnover.

Yes mids play a role in creating turnovers and scoring from them, but no more than the high half forwards and wingers and less than intercepting defenders and half back flankers.

Doesn’t that suggest we are over weight on salary for our midfield? Have we over invested in midfielders for a clearance contest dominance game that is no longer the secret sauce it was?

  3. Stanley was monstered by Pittonet and hopefully max takes that to the next level

danger out as well so we should be competitive on clearances although they don’t matter so much apparently (Binman?)

the cats are very good from turnovers and their fwd line is elite

  4. Sheesh his kicking for goal was cr#p last night and this year

maybe his injury is an excuse but it’s too hard to get forward entries not to convert

what kind of money is he on?

if he is going his trade value is plummeting

Getting back to yesterday's results, I see that Carlton fans were visibly rocked by that close loss.

    Perhaps Metamucil?

Yes. I keep hearing he is a wonderful mark of the football. Except today he didn't take any. But on a positive note, his 4 disposals is 3 more than he had in the last final Casey played in.

I don't think I have ever seen a player with less presence, at any level.

Someone has to take this kid aside and tell him the facts of life.

    Or just delist

Further to this do you agree or disagree with Kingy that Hit out stats are overrated.

“You would never pay big money for a tap ruckman” sheesh blasphemy on Demonland given our love of Max but reason says if you don’t dominate around the ground and can’t connect taps to clearances then you are wasting money

clubs who have a relatively [censored] low cost ruck Adelaide Geelong port Sydney Carlton gws west coast Brisbane

    others?

it’s academic I suppose because we aren’t trading Max …. But money ball says….

  8. Interested in your take on our apparent lack of clearance “connection” from centre bounces.

In centre bounces the idea that we play an extra behind the play can’t apply and arguably centre bounce clearances provide great opportunities for forwards because there is less fwd congestion.

max has a 29% hit outs to advantage stat considered “average”

what is the stat for hit outs to advantage from centre bounces?

Is this an area for improvement?

    Was it?

I have an open mind but if your taps aren’t resulting in better clearance numbers it doesn’t matter.

it seemed to me that we were losing the clearances - what do the stats say?

it’s like bombing the ball into the fwd line with “no connection”

there is not the connection we used to see between Gawn and the midfield

taps without connection are worth what?

According to afl app Max has

hit outs to advantage 29% considered “average “

he is highly rated and I don’t doubt that but as a unit the midfield group are under achieving on clearances

presumably because we play one behind the play

that can’t apply at centre bounces though

Max’s tap work was very good, but our midfield was non-existent at his feet. So much so

  11. The amount of territory the guy covers is amazing

it means effectively we have more cattle on the park

In his first game against Geelong (memorable win) his second effort and goal announced what he had

massive tank always wins the 2k trial

BBB may be rested for Schache, as no point in destroying what's left of his knee, with a 5 day break.

Crows are not strong in key backs, so Schache could go ok.

Given the training reports of Chin looking upset, it could be Kolt in for his first.

I think Woey will get a full game, as he was sub and is fresh from Saturday.

The thing BBB does that Schacke doesn’t is present to the half back line to get a mark that helps us exit defence

I think Schacke has been tried and tried with us and other clubs and is just too lacking in impact

it’s what you bring when the ball isn’t delivered lace out - Jvr bbb make it a contest

  13. ANB is not only an unsung hero but also a great spokesperson for the club

This is only a recent example

    29 possessions and 2 goals

    aerobic beast

but it’s his leadership his passion for good that most inspires

i think he will be captain soon
