I don't think you want to negotiate. You want to put an offer to him that he will accept. You need to take some risks if you think that the investment is a good one. One that shows that the Club/board has confidence, belief and trust in the man. The promised land is sustained success over the long term. The flag is the icing on the cake but it is not the be all and end all Life is uncertain so nothing is promised but decision makers need to make a decision that considers at minimum the next five years. Personally, when you look at the great clubs of the past, you see a sustained path of success over 20 to 40 years. Every season supporters and media will ask questions based on match results. But we don't want a coach thinking short-term. For success, you must be looking long term to the point where success is expected not anticipated and becomes the status quo not the occasional. Sure I want to see success before I die but i also want to die thinking that my club is going to be successful for ever, for my children, grandchildren and those of all Melbourne Supporters. That the rock known as the Melbourne Football Club will outlive me and last forever into eternity.

Training - 2nd February, 2019 @ Maroochydore
hemingway replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
How much media tripe do people want from the club or from the footy media? We live in a world saturated with information much of it of little value. Sure I want to hear important news but much of the stuff people seem to want to hear or read is not important. The season is still weeks away. Do you want to read stuff all the time? The more media stuff is demanded and supplied, the more trivial and unimportant it becomes. The amount of stories and news is directly proportional to its quality or standard. One of the problems today is that sport has become stale, it has lost its freshness. Matches of one sort or another are being played all year and there is the never ending media commentary. Cricket, Tennis, Footy etc. The administrators, advertisers, media outlets etc want saturation of their sport or product. As a result, the anticipation and excitement of waiting for the the season to begin has been mitigated by the constant exposure of the sport. Sure I want to hear important news but why do we demand to hear stuff all the time. New information, insightful reports are good, but most of what we hear or read is of little value. Nothing changes. So the troopers who sent training reports....fantastic. I much prefer reading independent reports from our loyal posters than hearing some media spin from our footy club. -
Organisational culture and setting standards starts from the top and goes all way down. Amazing that it took the Club 50 years to do it.

No Sir, actually that year my favourite was Fiddler on the Roof, closely followed by Klute and the French Connection.
-
now that's the most disingenuous post today.

I am obviously a dag, as Oktoberfest and fun are antonyms to me. My standards are not that high but they would preclude me from going to this drunken swill and putting my nose between a girls breasts! If a Male did that to my daughter or wife I would break his nose.

Absolutely Sir, as are all the "opinion pieces" on this site. My first line referred to the words value judgement. Each to their own. I do object to the excuse that it's all just a bit of fun. That's opinion as well.

Whatever your value judgement on the incident, the majority of people including AFL footballers would not behave this way. Watts can now say it "looks bad". Yes it does, but he did it. Whatever the substance, Jack looks the worse for wear. Was the waitress consenting ? She was not objecting, but do you think she was getting a lot of fun out of it? I suspect not, but a bunch of Aussie lads on holiday (as if that makes any difference) wanted to have a bit of fun at the expense of the waitress. Its demeaning and sexist. The majority of men including AFL players would not have behaved this way. Its not Jack Trengove, a team mate and friend of Watts. Watts is clearly a party boy who likes the social limelight but lacks the commitment and discipline to be a top footballer. But we are not talking about football, but an attitude and action that is inappropriate and ill disciplined whoever the person be and another case of men behaving badly towards women. The fact that Watts says it looks bad, simply means "he looks bad." It's all about him. What about the young woman? Any reference or apology . No of course not. I forgot, she was obviously having fun.

Agree with your comments Daisy. Glenferrie Oval was a congested ground with little space. If he played today, he would kick goals, zone defence or not. The size and poor condition of the ground assisted the Hawks in their home games for a long time. They were not a fast team but had a team of hardnuts that were hard to beat in the mud. The small size of the ground meant that the game was always congested, although, at times, the ball came out of the mid field to Hudson very quickly from players like Crimmins and Keddie. One kick and the ball was in the goal square. Of course Hudson kicked goals on all grounds irrespective of size. He was a freak. Like other greats he could read the play ahead of others, often moving to space that defenders vacated and in man on man duels, he had an ability to out position or out manoeuvre. He was big and lumpy and hard to get around if you were a defender. Often the ball would hit the ground and Hudson would already be there picking up the ball and sending a screwy old kick through the sticks. He was not a runner but he had very quick reflexes. These days most sides have multiple goal kickers particularly from running players but Huddo would still be there effortlessly adding to the tally. He may not kick the bag of goals that he did in those times but he would be good for 4 or 5 every match.

Agreed but there are a lot of many immature adults. Jack is clearly one.
-
This says it all.
-
Jack has not grown up, the behaviour of someone who is very immature .......and foolish.

This sort of stuff makes me crave for the time before social media.

Some very ordinary comments on this thread. I liked him and thought he had much to offer. He conducted himself extremely well after the incident. But he is only retiring from footy, which is not very important in the scheme of things. He will do well in life.

interesting. These days the mind body connection is a well established theory regarding physical and mental health. Mind control is a term we hear a lot about. I'm a firm believer in how the power of the mind or mind control can prevent or at least influence physical health and at the same time have a beneficial effect on mental health. Meditation, mindfulness, yoga, tai chi all focus on mind control. The essential component of mind control or whatever you want to call it is proper breathing technique or slowing down the breath using the diaphragm. As well as the recreational benefits, many involved in sport are using these techniques to improve performance. To stay calm and focussed and to improve energy levels. Swimming naturally does it, but increasingly cyclists and others sports are going down this path. Yoga is increasingly popular not just for flexibility but also for mind control/breathing. You can't improve at yoga without controlling your breath.

Your right. Of course that can be said for all of us and that includes all Demon tragics including your goodself. But life is a tragic comedy given the triviality of our human existence with its inevitable end. We are simply filling in time until the end. Perhaps we should take up metaphysical spirituality Satyricon ? No, you have your role in life with your training reports that inform and entertain us all.

Love your work La Dee.

Umm very true, and a tautology. Cant get away with anything on this site. Should have read self starters who have been given the confidence they needed.

Happened just in front of me in the forward pocket in front of the old Dr Sandy Ferguson stand. It was early 1970s, around 1971 or 72. Hudson went out to meet the ball but Barry Bourke feel across his leg damaging his knee. Hudson had kicked 8 goals up to half-time. There was a deathly hush across the ground as he was carried off on a stretcher. Hawks supporters were in a state of dismay and shock whereas Demon supporters (and players) were relieved that the pain Hudson was inflicting on Melbourne was over. This is against the backdrop of him kicking 16 goals against a hapless Melbourne in 1969. I was also there that day and it was probably the most sensational but nightmarish performance I have ever seen on a footy field All from a player who couldn't run, take a mark above his head and apart from his deadly accuracy with his flat punts from 40 metres out, was not much of a kick. It did not matter what opposition teams did to negate Hudson, he could outplay any number of opponents at the one time and find a way to kick a bag of goals. There were multiple occasions when he kicked more than 10 goals. This would probably not happen today with the way the game has fundamentally changed from positional football to a running rugby scrum.

The development of Harms and ANB are two of the best success stories out of 2018. Seen as fringe players by many, they have developed into automatic selections and are playing important roles in a team. They have gained confidence from the coach who has nurtured their development and given them the opportunity to develop without the fear of failing. . Individuals develop over different lengths of time, but you need to be able to identify the potential and and allow the growth of self-confidence. These two guys are clearly self-motivated and switched on. Self starters who have been given the start they needed.

True for Bernie but not Tassie. Tassie was a natural footballer who had great ball sense, and knew where to position himself, usually side by side or at the back of his opponents neck. Bernie did not have that gift and could be found out of position against better opponents, but he was a beautiful kick.

Demons Grand Plan for Yarra Park Training HQ
hemingway replied to Wiseblood's topic in Melbourne Demons
Simple difference is that it is Yarra Park which for many years has been seen as sacred ground. The pollies have no trouble backing "safe ground" but Yarra Park and environs is a hot potato. You may have forgotten that when plans were announced back in the mid to late 80s for the erection of light towers, there was a huge backlash from the local residents, community groups and greenies. That was over 20 years ago and pollies have become even more sensitive and cautious in making any decision that will get people off-side. -
At least posters on this site give their real opinion with all their truths, half truths and mistruths, and with all their eccentricities and quirks. You have to say, it has its interests. offensive but a good description
