  1. ive been saying this for weeks. He isnt as big of a dh as people have been led to believe, his talented though not a grade and has three younger brothers all hoping to get drafted and with talent.

He was picked up at pick 11 in 2011 and has played some great footy. Even with his indiscretion, there is absolutely no way in hell that GWS would trade him off for pick 23.

Also, I went to school with him and hear from mutual friends that he is quite happy in GWS at this stage, may look to come back some stage in the future though.

  2. Just as a matter of interest Bob, what's the difference between:-

    (a) keeping an injured player on your senior list and then putting him on your long term injury list and

    (b) delisting the player and picking him up as a rookie?

Would there be advantages either way for a club or a player eg room in salary cap etc. (I assume the player gets paid either way).

Wouldn't you have to pay out his final year of the contract (which would be considerably more than a rookie contract spot) then pay him the rookie contract amount? Also, Saints would be able to jump in at pick 1 if they were interested.

  3. On Toby Greene and I'm aware of the no DH policy but I wonder if, in view of the err ... problems he's been experiencing, it would be best for his welfare and his social rehabilitation to be as far away from western Sydney as possible and that he might find a safer haven under the watchful eye of Roosy and with former junior teammates in Viney and Tyson around to keep him in check.

[note the irony - if it happens we'll be prising him away from the evil influence of Voldemort]

On the contrary Jack, I went to school with Toby and I think it will most likely will be better for him to remain in GWS. The 'incident' in question occurred in Melbourne and the friends he has in Melbourne aren't a good influence on him. Knowing both them and him I am not surprised an incident occurred but am surprised he was involved. He was a little bit dumb but seemed like a good kid.

  4. what do you all think about Melbourne trading M.Clark & pick 23 for Geelong pick 14.

gives us either a much better bargaining chip for other trades or access to higher level talent.

ie. ontrade pick 14 and 3 to Adelaide for P.Dangerfield while keeping pick 2 for the beast McCartin

M Clark and pick 23 for Geelong pick 14 and 34. 34 ontraded for HL

  5. Trade Clark, pick 23 and Blease for Pick 14 and Pick 35 from Geelong. Ontrade 35 for Lumumba, Stretch F/S in the 3rd round, Frost traded for 4th round pick. If unable to find any suitor for pick 3, trade it on to Gold Coast for 8 and 15.

Melbourne Has: Pick 2, Pick 8, Pick 14, Pick 15, Lumumba, Stretch, Frost

Out: Pick 3, Pick 23, Pick 41, Pick 60, Frawley, Clark, Blease

Trade any of 2, 8, 14 or 15 for established players or utilise them in the draft.

Edit: Forgot Frawley and draft picks edited for after free agency compo picks.

  6. I really think we need to be looking at a midfielder with pace. That is something we are sorely lacking. Especially when we get the ball from defence to the midfield, there is literally no-one who has the speed to take the game on and deliver the ball. Hence why it is always stop start. (Also Roos instructed us to play that way aswell)

Midfielder with pace... who can kick. Blease has pace but can't kick.

  7. Our last attempt at getting experienced players got us Vince, Cross and Tyson; 3 of our best 5 players currently, while still having a pick low enough to draft a talent such as Salem. Who says that isn't what's going to happen again this time?

I agree Nasher, last period we did very well out of the senior recruits, I just hope we are not pushing our luck!

  8. I have some concerns about how MFC is handling the upcoming trade period.

We all remember the famous 'moneyball' trade period of 2012 where we lost players Moloney, Rivers, Martin, Gysberts and Petterd and brought in Dawes, Byrnes, Rohan, Pedersen and Gillies. Since then, Dawes has been underwhelming, Gillies delisted whilst Byrnes and Rodan have already retired.

It appears now that we may be undertaking another 'moneyball' trade period. Merrett, Lumumba, Frost? Two of these players are past their primes just as Byrnes and Rohan were and Frost looms as a potential Pedersen or Gillies comparison, meaning he could either improve and contribute well or fall away.

Note as well that all these players are usually played in defence. Roos has also made it very public that our improvement needs to come from the midfield so I am a bit confused by this. Some have posted on here that this is all smokes and mirrors for our real targets, I am not so sure.

Don't get me wrong I am glad we are targeting players with experience, we obviously cannot recruit only 18 year olds. But I was beginning to wonder if our excitement of having Paul Roos as coach is leading us to believe that "we know what we are doing this time round, its a new board" etc etc. but is this strategy really going to work?

I think we need to back ourselves in to only get these players if the deal is right and not payer overs because we are desperate for senior experience (for example I would argue that pick 22 for Lumumba is paying overs). If these players come cheaply then I understand our attraction but I am not so sure they will. Otherwise, I would rather see us go to the draft and back MFC to mould them into strong players of the future. Even if this means trading down picks so there is less pressure on the players (trade pick 2 to gold coast for picks 7 and 14) as all the media seems to indicate that the players in the 5 - 15 range are all of a similar standard and could go anywhere.

Just confirming I am very happy with Paul Roos and PJ but just a bit concerned.

    Thoughts?

  9. An observation:

If he is a restricted free agent, then all Adelaide has to do is match the offer next year, which they will more than likely have the capacity to do against the big successful clubs. They could use this as leverage to a) force the clubs to trade b) steer Paddy towards a less successful club or c) stay. Unless Adelaide are nice about it, then it’s going to be very difficult for Paddy to get to Hawthorn, Geelong, etc

But if he was determined to come back to Melbourne and join a club who can offer greater dollars than Adelaide, i.e. the MFC; then Adelaide would need to give strong consideration to MFC’s offer this year so as to make the best of a bad situation.

Yes but Tex, Sloane and Danger are all out at the same time, I highly doubt they will be able to match the offers from different clubs for all of these players. I.e. $1M a year for Patty, $700,000 a year for Sloane and Tex.

  10. Frost has played 12 games, so still has some growing to do. I don't think GWS are going to ask the world for him, so he could be a nice acquisition at the right price. We will see if he can be packaged with another few young stars, or come to the dees via a 1-1 type swap, whether it be a player or a pick.

Hopefully he actually wants to come here, and not join Hawthorn/Collingwood like every other home sick kid!

If we get Sam Frost I doubt we will move on Oscar McDonald (Tom's brother) as they are a similar height and play the same position. I was expecting him to be our 4th round pick.

  11. But if Clark nominates Geelong (for example) then Geelong can just offer Melbourne their last pick and say take it or leave it becuase as was agreed Clark is being delisted by Melbourne, after which he is a Free Agent and can join any team he likes for free.

Clark can't be a delisted free agent because of the terms in the settlement agreement.

"The AFL Players Association view is that Clark cannot be considered for free agency, because the terms of his settlement with Melbourne were equivalent to a player retiring and the rules prohibit players exploiting retirement as a back-door way of claiming free agency. So, Clark's options are either to play at Melbourne or find another club via a trade or the draft."

  12. Maybe we can offer AFC a low pick and we can also offer Dangerfieild:

    • a good salary package;
    • the opportunity to be coached by Roos for the first two years;
    • the chance to be coached by a respected former team-mate/all-Australian/AFC Captain in Goodwin after that
    • the chance to play in the midfield with his old mate Bernie Vince (plus Riley] and
    • playing in the same midield with Jones, Viney and Tyson.

I think he'd rather play with Sloane, Thompson and Van Berlo.
