Draft the catalyst for Demons: Bailey

I wouldn't be surprised if Brock is appointed captain next year.

Bailey made special mention of him (and Petterd :D) in his press conference.

"The development aspect and the development term should not be programmed or pushed just towards the young players. We have a list of 44 players and we are going to develop all players.

"The word "rebuild" suggests that you're going to accept a loss here or there in the rebuild. I've said before the greatest challenge you can put to the players is, don't put any limitations on them.

"If you do that, then they're excited about achieving something they may never have done before, and it starts today."

This is about the best thing I have heard from Melbourne lately (and applies to any of the 15 teams that did not win the flag!)

Why is it ever acceptable to go into a season accepting that you will not succeed?

What top level athlete enters an event thinking, "Well I can't win, so I'll just try"

In my opinion, the terms and thought processes, that go with "Development year" or "Rebuilding phase" justify and embed a culture of failure in a team.

Next years success "starts today" I hope so.

 Dean Bailey

The only Melbourne coach never to lose a game. It's a record that speaks for itself, and I'm sure he'll be keen to maintain it.

But seriously, the whole restructure of the Footy department looks pretty sweet. I'm stoked to have the two development coaches in particular.

Nomed you are absolutely right about the 'rebuilding phase' rubbish. Richmond and Carlton have been the big talkers about long-term rebuilding programs. Whoopee for them. Seems they decided they were so good at it they'd just keep on going.

Maybe their plan is to keep losing until they can start picking up not only top picks, but grad Gibbs II and Murphy Jnr with Father-Son selections. Then they couldn't possibly lose.

Mind you, talk of 'we're just about to turn the corner and become a powerhouse' can knock the legs out too. Think Hawthorn before Schwab's last year, Doggies this year, Demons this year, Freo and Richmond most of the time...

Again, Dean Bailey seems to get it right. He hasn't promised anyone anything, and good on him for it.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
