another player who performs in a completely different role at vfl level compared to what is expected from him at afl level

he looks like an inside midfielder to me, which is the role he plays at vfl level

for mine, there are clear concerns over his speed and his skills

his attitude and intent look excellent

What were your expectations of a 19 year old in his second year?

Based on what he's shown at AFL level, I truly struggle to see him on an AFL post the expiration of his current contract. I'll say it again, I find this draft selection one of the more baffling ones we've made recently.

He's young, I'll give him that and potentially, it's not an insurmountable mountain to climb; but it's heading that way. We'll see what King has in store for him.

Again… people expectations of 19yo playing their second seasons are absurd. They expect everyone to be willing to Ashcroft

Wow.... Really? Really? That is your takeaway from the 2 years he has been on the list. That he is lazy, sits in cafes, doesn't listen to coaches, and he must have got a rocket at the exit interview?

Tearing up the track in pre-season, track watchers getting excited, then gets injured and has to work his way back to fitness. So has not had any pre-seasons. Then in the back half of the year, leads the Casey midfield, breaking tackles, getting clearances, setting up goals. But because he has a mullet, he must not work hard at all?

Maybe someone needs to have a word with him to go find a club where supporters are willing to accept that a human being can be who they are, and still train hard and play good football. I would hate to be the child or employee of half the people on this thread - your self-confidence would be shot and you'd have no chance at being able to make it at anything. There is critical analysis about a player's flaws and areas of improvement, but calling out their dress sense as an example of them not taking their job seriously is low.

Finally a voice of sanity. I thought I was the crazy one thinking expectations of a second year kid are absurd

I don’t ever recall comparing him to Ashcroft, but the reality is it’s a performance based industry and he is as a high draft selection. At a bear minimum, incremental improvement would be expected.

What expectations have I said that are ‘absurd’?

'Personality' hire due to a mullet and speed dealer sunnies who hasn't come on in terms of his AFL career...

We all knew he was a speculative pick at the time. A wildcard with great potential upside but they don’t always come off.

I desperately want Kolt to succeed and I’m not in any way saying that there are alarm bells, a new coach could help kickstart his career. However I have to agree with others that I’m not really seeing 'it' right now. To include him in a future core group alongside Windsor, Langford and Lindsay feels more wishful than anything with actual substance.

If there was something to hang the hat on it would be different eg. A few more booming goals with limited chances or some nice raking passes across the ground but so far it’s mainly been bit part efforts.

Really hope we can see some improvement in 26.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
