AFLW TRAINING: Wednesday 10th September 2025

Cold morning with a light drizzle to start their session, the drizzle stopped before the whistle to begin, blew.

A few of the rehabbers were doing the warm-ups and drills with the main group. Beasley, Gillard, Goldrick, B.Mackin, Hose, D.Taylor, later, they attended their personal and rehab groupings. No Purcell today.

Goldy and Gillard look close as they did fast and extensive run throughs.

The drills consisted of three stations, a competitive running game, a behind the mark kick, to a lead up drill, and a run and carry down the wing drill.

They then went into two competitive groups of handball games.

Then the sims with two sessions of about 7 minutes each. A group of 6 or 7 players, probably from the Casey VFL team, were train-ons in the sim.

During sims Dethridge kept running into Hore when she got it, she got it and was got, quite a few times. I reckon she needs to play to get used to the pace. Some of them are running fast and extensive, led by McNamara and Paxy. Colvin and S. Taylor with intercepts. Harris leading well up the ground. Rigoni keeping Bannan out of it. Zanker and Gall playing deep, as well as pushing high when the opposition had the ball. Chaplin with the run and sling. Most of the ball movement was straight down the spine, no switching or lateral except for the first kick from the deep back area. They love going fast, and making those handballs and short kicks to connect with the forwards.

They finished with goal kicking and high marking on the bag. The talls really enjoying the craft of high marking. Plenty of gasps and applause as they succeeded. Dethridge was working with a ruck (possibly Hose) where she was getting in and under, before hitting a low bag.

Heath came off during the drills, in distress (lower leg), she went back out for the sims and appeared fine.

I've seen a fair bit of the women's training at Gosch's this year but quite a bit has been captain's run and flush runs. Today was full on and it was full on.

Having watched the women over the journey I was struck today and how much the game has improved. The speed of the game is significantly faster, the ball handling much cleaner and the kicking, particularly for goal much improved. Standing close to them today during the match drill highlighted to me how far they have come, it was quick and skillful.

The other thing that is noticable is what a happy bunch they are. There is a genuine buzz and enjoyment in what they are doing which contrasts with the men's training sessions which also has a buzz but is somehow different. And the women seem to at least recognize and appreciate track watchers. Eden particularly smiles and says hello, Saraid Taylor another that over the journey has been proactively friendly and all of them just give a different vibe to us compared with the men.

It's good fun watching them if you're considering a journey to Gosch's. And they train for well over 1 and a half hours. I had to leave early as I had a 2 hour parking spot. Despite the cold today, and it was, it's fun watching them.

Can't help but reflect that Mick and the whole team have embraced both the team first mentality and also showing the love for each other and playing the game more than the blokes at this time.

Some great positives.

Direct, fast transition through the corridor.

Some key players almost ready to step back in.

And goal kicking!

Go Dees

Thanks heaps to the track watchers

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
