AFLW TRAINING: Tuesday 24th September 2024

Featured Replies

The music put them in some rhythms for this morning run.

Light duties included Mackin, Zanker, Rigoni, Taylor, Johnson. Paxmen still restricted, attending some drills. Many didn't have numbers on their kit. I couldn't tell how Beasley trained. Tayla and Pearce still assisting on the track.

Simulations, the squad split into two groups, ground ball gets and hit up to two leading forwards. The other was stoppage and clearance around the defensive mid.

Plenty of goal kicking practice during the session.

They finished with two teams taking on the coaches and tie-ins, The teams rotated in and out, as the coaches battled the flood of strong players, coaches ran out of steam.

That expanding injury list is really out of control

Injury list: Round 5

Paxy Paxman — foot Test

Jemma Rigoni — groin Test

Eden Zanker — knee TBC

Saraid Taylor — calf 1-2 Weeks

Blaithin Mackin — calf 3-5 Weeks

Lauren Pearce — wrist 4 weeks

Olivia Purcell — face 3-4 Weeks

Tayla Harris — shoulder Season

Grace Beasley — knee Season

Jacinta Hose — knee Season

Aimee Mackin — knee Season

Yes, a season defining injury list.

Beasley, Blaithin and Edo added, Paxy and Rigoni as test hopefully coming off, plus we have a timeframe for Liv.

CTTG mentioned that Melbourne is in top up territory… we await Todd P’s next move.

Meggs suggests Casey BnF and VFLW team of the year member, Meg McDonald.  A Tyabb bred ball winning midfielder.

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
