So in news that effects the Hockeyroos, Argentina have just defeated Great Britain in the Hockey 3-0. It means that for Hockeyroos to top the group, they need to defeat Spain later tonight by at least 2 goals. Or 1 goal if it's a high scoring shoot out (at least 5-4. But that's unlikely).

Hockeyroos get the win 3-1 over Spain despite playing pretty ordinary compared to their last three matches. This win places them top of their Group and means they'll have a likely Quarter Final against China.

And Gold for Australia in the Mens Doubles! What an effort to Eden and Peers. And all the better beating the Americans!

Silver to Australia in the windsurfing with Grey Morris! Great effort, I had a lot of trouble following what was going on out there. Haha.

Well the Sharks have done it again. Defeating European powerhouse Hungary 9-8 in the Waterpolo. Never seen them play so well as they are at the moment. Have set themselves up for a legitimate push for a medal.

A great win indeed.  Our Men's Water Polo team is playing extremely well

3 big wins against quality opposition so it can't be put down as a fluke.  The sport is professional in the Eastern European countries so we're punching above our weight

But it will get harder from here as our quarter final opposition will be a decent team.  Still, all you can do is win against who is next up.  Kudos!

Another loss for our women in the 3x3 Basketball to France 16-18 in overtime. Some real questionable umpire calls didn't help them. A win would have locked up a top 2 spot and automatic semi final birth. Now they need to go through the play in phase. Sadly with their injuries, I expect they might get bounced straight away.

Bronze to Kaylee McKeown in the 200IM. A little controversial given she touched 4th, but 3rd place was D/Q'd for an illegal turn. She can do no wrong Kaylee.

Silver to Australia and Arianna Titmus. A real brave fight taking it up to Katie Ledecky in Ledecky's pet event the 800 meters. One hell of a race!

Australia's Womens 3x3 Basketball team have been soundly beaten by Canada 10-21 and have been eliminated. A real shame as they were looking good until injury struck. They played some good ball at times in this tournament.

Bronze for Australia in the Mixed Medley Relay. I have to say, I question the selection decision to sub out Kyle Chalmers and Emma McKeon for Mollie O'Callaghan and Matt Temple??? Who knows what the thought process is?

With one night to go in the pool, we're now only one Gold ahead of the USA. We need our women to take out their Medley Relay tomorrow to ensure we stay on top. Will be a tough ask!

n.b At 1.00am tomorrow (Monday) Australia'a Artacho del Solar & Taliqua Clancy are in action in a round of 16 match against Brazil in the Women's Beach Volleyball

Also, Novak Djokovic & Carlos Alcaraz face off in the Men's Singles Gold Medal match following the Women's Doubles Gold Medal Match (so sometime after 9.15pm)

Other Medal chances tonight

Grace Brown in the Cycling Road Race.  Won the time-trial so could be a factor in the Road Race.  Aussies Ruby Roseman-Gannon & Lauretta Hanson are also a chance

Jason Day in the Golf but he might have to shoot at least a 65 in the 4th round.  Calm conditions should see low scoring

Shayna Jack & Meg Harris in the 50m Freestyle

Both the Men's & Women's 4 x 100m Medley Relay's

Caitlin Parker in a Q/F of the 75kg Boxing (winner is guaranteed a Bronze medal) n.b. Caitlin's bout is on at 7.48pm AEST

Eleanor Patterson & Nicola Olylagers in the Women's High Jump

We may well have 1 or 2 more chances at a medal given the myriad of other sports all happening on the same day

Caitlin Parker wins her Q/F bout on points after dominating the fight

Now into the S/F's, Caitlin is assued of a medal and is up against a Chinese opponent who will be hard to beat.  But Parker is a real show on current form

Thanks for the breakdown Macca. I feel in the pool, our Womens Medley team us our best chance of Gold, as long as we don't lose too much time on the Breastroke leg. Shayna Jack and Meg Harris are both also shots in the 50m Freestyle, though it will be tough to beat Sjostrom from Sweden.

Only one more Gold to equal our Gold haul from Melbourne 56'.

Yes, and as you would be aware, TD,  the Kookaburras match against the Dutch is a Q/F.  So it's sudden death as are most of the team sports from here on in

And 8 of our teams are still alive albeit just hanging on in the Men's & Women's Beach Volleyball.  But both teams can rally

Boomers ended up finishing 2nd in their group which lands us against Serbia in a Q/F.  We avoided the USA (for now)

Sharks have been very good and have been the real surprise packet whilst the Hockeyroos have been excellent from an overall point of view.  Opals & Stingers are a real show

Just has a look at the USA's team in the Basketball.  On paper, they look unbeatable!

Curry, James, Adebayo, Booker, Davis, Durant, Edwards, Embiid, Haiburton, Holiday, Taturn & White

Good luck!

No I can't see anyone beating USA in the Basketball. Boomers are on the same side of the elimination draw as USA, so even if we get past Serbia, I feel that it's Bronze Medal at best.

We go to penalties in the Women's Water Polo which means we can't finish worse than 2nd in our group and thus, avoiding powerhouse's Spain & the USA in the Q/F's

Edit:  And we win on penalties!

Avoiding finishing 3rd was the main goal and the Water Polo Women are playing really well.  Alice Williams had a night out and Gabby Palm was fantastic in goal

Edited by Macca

What a win by the Stingers! Two wins in penalty shoot outs shows they have nerves of steel and deserve to top their group. Bring on the Quarter Finals!

I'm not sure whether we have topped the group as the Netherlands can draw level on points if they beat Canada ... and their goal difference shades ours as well? (or will do if they win)

Regardless, we're in a strong position to advance past the Q/F's as we've avoided the 2 strong teams in the other group (for now)

Harkan (on commentary) mentioned that even if we have equal points as Netherlands, we'll finish above them give we won the match in head to head.

I thought that might have been a factor but couldn't see it within the rules of how the teams advance

Makes sense too as we did beat them in the group matches.  So I stand corrected!! (you are the guru of all things Olympics, TD!)

But again, avoiding the USA & Spain in the Q/F's was paramount and if we get past the Q/F we'll still have to beat the best to win big anyway.  But the first assignment is France, Greece or Italy and that won't be easy

The Men's Water Polo team has a chance to finish outright 2nd if we can defeat Japan but regardless, our QF opponent will be a tough assignment

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
