Mariafe/Clancy have just defeated the highly ranked Brazilian pair 24-22, 21-14 in an amazing effort. They really have worked their way into this competition nicely. They'll now go up against the Swiss in the Quarter Finals.

Silver to Australia and Meg Harris in her only individual race! Well done young girl. The shocked look on her face was priceless.

The Kookaburras have been knocked out in the Quarter Finals 0-2 by a very good Netherlands team. It's been quite a disappointing tournament for them by their own expectations.

Here's hoping Hockeyroos can keep the flag flying tomorrow.

More silver with our womens Medley team. Unfortunately with two gold medals on the final night, USA still ended up edging out Australia for winning the battle in the pool for this Olympics. Was still a great meet though!

The Opals do what they need to do and get the win 79-72 over France to secure a Quarter Final spot. Still TBA as to who it will be. But hopefully with the two wins, they should be able to avoid USA.

Yes, the medals keep coming but in terms of the Gold medals, they will be tough to attain from here on in.  Sailing & Track Cycling might deliver a couple and maybe a few more elsewhere in the other sports (Canoe Slalom Kayak Cross tonight for the Women's & Men's?) 

But there's usually a couple of surprise Gold medals and we may well end up challenging the 17 Gold we attained in Athens & Sydney

But to win a medal of any colour is quite the achievement and we only have to look at the joy on the athletes faces when they win a Silver or Bronze (any Nation) 

It would be nice to be able to say to anyone that you've won an Olympic Medal!! 

So well done to all our medallists overnight.  Kudos!

The Hockeyroos finally get it back to 2-3 but we haven't handled China's press very well at all

One quarter to save our Olympic campaign

Hockeyroos disappointing but we had our chances (5 short corners in a row led to zero conversions)

In my view, the better team won as we were well short of our best.  And China played very well (especially their press and defence)

The curse of the knockout QF's continues

 

Anyway, at least 5 chances to medal tonight

Noèmie Fox,  Tim Anderson & Tristan Carter in the Canoe Slalom Kayak Cross have all advanced to the QF's

Kurtis Marschall in the Men's Pole Vault has a good chance to medal

Jack Robinson in the Men's Surfing can win his SF and Rose Davies is an outside chance in the 5000m Final

The Sharks play Japan in their final group match but I'm not sure we can move from 2nd place anyway (based on head-to-head)

Disaster for the Hockeyroos with their 2-3 loss to China. And our Hockey teams have been eliminated in consecutive days in the Quarter Finals. This marks just the second time in the last 10 games that neither of our Hockey teams have medalled.

To add insult to injury, this is the second games in a row that the Hockeyroos have topped their group, only to be knocked out first up in a Quarter Final. Where to from here???

Men's & Women's Water Polo,  Men's & Women's Basketball and the Women's Beach Volleyball are our remaining 5 chances

I'd say our best chance are the Stingers and then maybe the Women's Beach Volleyball or the Opals*

The Boomers can reach the S/F's but it gets tough from there whilst if the Sharks can continue their great form, they may snag a medal

*If the Opals win their Q/F match their likely SF opponent will be the USA

We can't move from 2nd place in our group but the other group could see a change in order of the top 4, depending on who wins against who

Think I'm right in saying we could end up playing any 1 of 4 opponents (Italy, Croatia, USA or Greece) ... again, depending on the results in the last round of games

And any of the 4 opponents will be hard to beat but also, all are beatable if the Sharks continue to bring their A game

Not a great night for our teams it seems with the Sharks going down to the previously winless Japan 13-14, after blowing a 4-0 lead.

Looked like they played their back up goal keeper and they were assured of 2nd in their group anyway, but you'd like to take winning form into the Knockouts. Next up the Quarter Finals.

It looked like we were trying a few different moves out there tonight including a number of backhand shots (some came off, others didn't)

Our focus will be on the QF match-up but we'll be playing a team ranked either #3, #5, #6 or #8 in the world!  And we are ranked #9 but apart from tonight, we've played like men on a mission

It's going to be tough as I'm not sure we've ever made a SF at Olympic level before (Men's)

But we're in with a shot!

Much might depend on how well Milos Maksimovic plays, as he's got match-winning capabilities

Anyway, the Kayak Cross Q/F's start soon and we've got 3 representatives (was a shame that Jess missed a berth but her Sister Noèmie got through winning her heat last night)

Currently already our 5th most successful, we're only 1 Gold & 4 Silver (or 2 Gold) away from making it our 4th most successful. Is there anyway we could get 5 more Gold or 4 Gold & 5 Silver to make it our most successful? I think it's a tall ask, but you never know. Jess Hull, Track Cycling, Sailing and Nina Kennedy are all chances. Will be an interesting last few nights.

We might do ok in the Canoe Sprint races as well as a couple of other sports 

If we get to 45 medals (currently 33) I'll give us another 4 more Gold.  So 17 all-up, but maybe even 19 or 20 if augers well and with luck on our side

But I'm reasonably optimistic about our chances.  I usually prefer to be a realist but for the sake of the exercise, being a realist is a bit boring, TD

I reckon the Brits will exceed 20 Gold so they should get past us.  As will France and possibly Japan.  So top 6 might have to do

Agreed. Shattering after such a good start to the game. It will be very interesting to see how the team looks in 4 years time. Likely no Mills, Delly or Ingles anymore by LA 28.
