Official A.F.L Statistics

Does anyone understand how the player ranking system works in the official A.F.L statistics which appear in the papers?

The average appears on the right hand column and the particular game they're playing appears on the left.

It intrigues me how the rankings don't have any correlation to the best players that appear in the same paper.

In other words how do they work it out each week please? Thanks

The figure is a weighted statistical analysis of player-performance. Various actions carry different point awards, some of which may be negative. The actual modus of calculation is not available to the public. Champion Data might clue you up if you subscribe.

Thanks for that guys.

Stating the obvious the more kicks/h.balls one gets helps but the key stat is efficency. This is out of 100%. Clangers are not the only deciding factor in this. For a good example check Saturdays sport herald sun and compare Goodwin and Mcleod.

no wonder soft loose backmen look so good in those rankings, stand in the backline as a loose player, get 5-10 marks uncontested from opposition players bombing it long, kick the ball back up the field 15 metres to a teammate and you get 8 points for each mark and kick. thats 80 points for 10 marks and kicks, easy pickings for the loose man in defence.

i spose it is a way of ranking payers, and no system will be perfect, but i think it could do with some improvement, especially when you consider how football fans really rate the game: to them the best players are the hard at it, contested types, most people are sick of watching loose backmen rack up possessions.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
