The top 5 MFC coaches of your lifetime

There have only been five coaches in my lifetime (Daniher, Bailey, Neeld, Roos and Goodwin).

Here's my ranking:

1. Goodwin

2. Daniher

3. Roos

4. Bailey

5. Neeld

Reckon Yze, Craig, Viney and Riley might dispute that.

Roos & Barassi set things up for Goodwin & Northey but RDB & Roos didn't have much talent to work with (that talent blossomed or was recruited soon after)

But structure was established by both coaches ... A1 important

And Laurie Fowler reckons that Big Carl was the best coach he played under (Laurie was coached by Hafey & RDB)

Bobby Skilton got the team going late in '76 and we were playing well enough to win a final or 2 if we'd got in (missed by half a game) We went on a run similar to '87

I was at Vic Park that day in the last round of  '76 and the Collingwood members stand erupted with joy after the scores came through in the drawn game between Footscray & Carlton

They had long memories from all those Finals losses and they hated Melbourne.  So we hate them and any QB win should always be savoured!

They (the Pies) are our true enemy.  Love reminding Pie fans that we have defeated them in 14 of the last 15 encounters against them in finals ... the red & blue makes them shudder in September

And I've learnt so much about Norm Smith over the years that I feel like he should be on top (but I missed all those glory years - too young)

In the end it's a close call between Northey & Goodwin for top honours

1st - Goodwin (The Flag)

2nd - Northey (Great motivator)

3rd - Daniher (The players played for him)

4th - Barassi (or Roos)

5th - Roos (Or Barassi)

Skilts, Big Carl & Riddles did their very best

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Saturday Night’s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourne’s memorable premiership triumph.

  • NON-MFC: Round 02

The compromised AFL fixture will get another test this week with the first lot of teams getting a bye after only two matches. Despite this Round 2 starts off with two cracking games as the Hawks host the Swans at the G on Thursday Night and then on Friday Night the Crows host the Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
