Not giving 100%

Melbourne midfielder Cameron Bruce says the players' failure to contribute to all four quarters is behind the Demons' poor start to the season.

Rated one of the premiership fancies, Melbourne are winless in their first three games this season, suffering another loss to Geelong at the MCG on Sunday.

The Demons had to contend with injuries to several key players.

But Bruce said the key to turning around Melbourne's season was the team producing a consistent full game effort.

"At the moment we don't have everyone contributing to four quarters and that's letting us down and that's where we are going to turn it around," Bruce said.

"From the first gamer to our most senior player everyone has to contribute.

"It's no good playing a quarter here than having had a quarter of poor form."

Melbourne face a show down with another team without a win, Fremantle, in their next match at the MCG on Sunday.

I would be concerned if one of our players were playing 100% for four quarters. If they were they were playing at 100% they would not be up to afl standard.

We are lacking in many departments at the moment. extra effort will help some of these areas.

They tried their guts out!!! Anyone who's played sport knows what it can be like! On a bad day,the harder you try, the worse it gets! It makes me sick to hear people say "TJ just wasn't interested". He gave his all. He's out of form, and (I hope, slightly, injured). His demeanour is easily misinterpreted. He's never going to look rushed, or shirtfront someone. He's got a certain style, and I don't want him to change! He's been missing targets, but he doesn't try the easy option. He goes for the difficult, highly constructve 50m. pinpoint pass. He needs confidence.

It's all about confidence. We've got to give the boys a chance to get confidence back by really going all out attack! I have no doubt they're good enough when they believe in themselves.

I actually didn't have a problem with the endeavour of the players on Sunday. I didn't have a problem with their style post run and carry. But Danaher needs to give us a real forward. And drop The Flash who is out of touch.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.

The Demons return to the scene of the crime on Saturday to face the wooden spooners the Eagles at the Docklands. Who comes in and who goes out? Like moving deck chairs on the Titanic.

It's Game Day and there are only 5 games to go. Can the Demons find some consistency and form as they stagger towards the finish line of another uninspiring season?
