Final round all at once

So I live in the UK and it’s interesting seeing the AFL borrowing ideas from other sports. One thing I would love to see them put into practice would be for all games for the final round be on at the same time (probably 2:10 on Saturday or Sunday).

The pros of this are that it takes out the possibility of manipulating results, there’s no favouritism when it comes to turnarounds (worst is a Sunday to Saturday break), and the bigger positive is that it’s bloody exciting and intense!

Imagine us needing a result to go our way to make finals so we’re keeping up with the scores of other games, our game finishes while theirs keeps going and we’re on the edge of our seats while we wait to hear the result. It’s enthralling to watch the way it’s done in the UK with their leagues when it comes to promotions, especially in the last 5-10min.

I recognise it’s unlikely to happen as the AFL would lose out on viewership/tv coverage etc and when it comes to a choice between fairness/integrity vs money the money always wins. But it would actually solve one of the issues that’s been plaguing the last round for a few years now, teams knowing the result of an influential match so pulling out their best players.

The logistics wouldn’t be easy either but we have enough stadiums around the country now, it’s not impossible.

Interstate derbies

Port vs Adelaide (Adelaide Oval)

Freo vs West Coast (Subiaco)

GSW vs Sydney (SCG or Spotless)

Brisbane vs Gold Coast (Gabba or Carrara)

Vic teams

Geelong vs someone (Geelong)

1 game at the MCG

1 game at Etihad

1 game at Tassie (North vs Hawks?)

Leaves one game between Vic clubs with no obvious place to play it....  maybe Ballarat?  The Doggies played there on the weekend.

It’s been a season of grit, growth, and glimpses of brilliance—mixed with a few tough interstate lessons. Now, with finals looming, the Dees head to Kardinia Park for one last tune-up before the real stuff begins.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
