Confidence

It really is a strange thing.

Within a few minutes players go from being flat-footed to diving in to get the ball. From jogging and watching to spreading and shepherding. From fumbling to holding marks. From standing still in waving their arms to working and running into space.

The problem is a lot of these things shouldn't require confidence, they should be instinct and all part of playing in the AFL.

I just hope the players can see the difference, that playing well is about doing the little things right and not just the spectacular.

Spot on CB

I saw 22 blokes struggle to get through the 3 qtrs of footy and pretty much predicted this club was down for the count

In that last qtr (which I plan to watch again with the rest of the game) I saw commitment I haven't seen from this side in years

Lets hope it's the first buidling blcok and they can take 1 final qtr in to 2 to 3 to 4 qtrs of solid footy

And i haven't said it yet - but stick it up your ass you media scab bastards - you'll have to wait 1 more week for MFC blood

The thing about confidence is there's high confidence, there's low confidence, and then there's the level we've been at for the past however long.

You look at the rest of the competition, and they run and spread and do the hard things because their confidence is still there to some degree. Ours was just shot to pieces - so much so that our desire to do the basics was so easily washed away that the slightest ill turn just ruined us.

The more I think of it our lack of leadership over recent years contributes to a lack of confidence. They need someone to show the way, to set the example especially in the middle. Someone highlighted when Sylvia broke about five tackles and kicked the ball forward in the last quarter, we need more of that.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
