This is pure speculation. Even if one accepts your "wanted a no.1 draft pick" line, that alone is a questionable rationale for such a massive decision.

Huge risk to throw 6 mil at an untried kid who to that time had played one stand-out game (against Footscray).

But hey, it's the AFL's money and he cleverly convinced Demetriou to go along with his Dr. Evil style plan.

Angry, bitter man underneath the kooky facade is Kevin Sheedy.
