I'm not a fan of old timers' footy matches but was drawn to the Mainwaring tribute match by the advertised inclusion of the enigmatic former no. 13. Didn't go the game at Subi but watched the TV coverage -- of course Jako wasn't there & there was no mention of his absence. Where is he?

But, as a consolation, the Dees were well represented. CC was the coach of the opposition team -- Connolly's Commandos -- & players included Woey, Spalding, Shaun Smith, Chopper Lovell, Dean Irving (played for us for a while), don't think I've missed any.

Some of those old footballers are still pretty good. Old Eagles like Heady & Kemp look like they could still be going around & Modra can still kick a magnificent goal. Cometti noted that the goal-kicking was less of a problem than w. present-day players.

It's because they over-complicate goal kicking. Most professional players can kick the ball to a team-mate across half-back, 40 metres away, and get it within 1-2 metres of him, nine times out of ten, some would be close to 98/99 out of 100. A lot of players change their techniques when kicking for goal. Yes, if you are kicking from 45+, many players will need to give it an extra roost, but how many set shots are still missed from within 35 metres? Players are more concerned about the consequences of missing an easy shot or not finishing off the piece of play when they shouldn't even be thinking that at all: they should be thinking about how good it is going to be to kick a goal. You should get excited at the prospect of kicking a goal - not nervous at the prospect of missing.

Players should do one of two things: either pick out a target behind the goals - a fan, a seat, an advertising sign - and aim for that, or do what I do; kick it hard at the middle. Works a treat for me.

Didn't end up playing? that's a shame. He was meant to appear at the lucheon for it as well.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
