Impending Free Agency

An interesting article about some developments in the US which could drastically change the landscape of their sporting codes.

This will most dramatically affect free agency and player salaries; since we may/will soon be heading down that path, these could be changes that will affect our leagues.

Granted our legal system is different, but I wouldn't be too surprised if we followed suit.

Its kinda long and boring but essentially the leagues could be given the power to determine what salary bracket a player can fit into or which teams a player could sign with and the player would have no way to appeal in the courts.

Essentially the leagues become immune to any sort of antitrust legal action.

Interesting read. In some ways I'd be prepared to pay more for games / merchandise etc if it meant that 10 brown, recycled, 500k paper bags (the FA equal of the usual 1) could not be used to stomp on the less financial and destroy their team.

What makes you say that? Why would a legal win for the NFL and other leagues impact on the AFLPA's move towards free agency?

IMO it's an entirely different landscape here, but I'll be interested to see if you're thinking of something that didn't occur to me when I read the article.

Regardless, it was an interesting read :)

It will greatly affect the landscape for those leagues and since we will soon be heading down the path of free agency ours could take a similar form.

Obviously it would need our courts to make a similar ruling, but a legal precedent would have been set overseas if the NFL wins and that precedent would carry some weight, albeit a very very small amount.

Its not likely, but it is feasible that this could have some sort of affect.

Maybe the AFL will see this and decide to stiff a supplier to create legal action and then try to get a similar ruling..?

There is not a direct relation to AFL, only that it changes the global sporting landscape.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
