Davey conscious

Featured Replies

Earlier in the year we were lauding at the move of Aaron Davey to the backline to give us run and dash.

However, I think we have become Davey-Conscious

Everytime we run out of the backline this is how it generally goes

1. Davey kicks out to a man short

2. Runs for the handball

3. Another kick or handball short

4. Runs for the handball around the back...but this time he demands the football and puts himself into a dangerous situation (something that TJ and Adem Yze used to do quite a bit)

We constantly look for Davey even when he is not in the best position. On the few occassions when we didn't look for him (i.e. when Chip kicked out), we actually moved the ball a whole lot quicker and smoother.

Davey has to go forward to solve 2 problems.

1. Our lack of a crumbing forward

2. The danger he puts himself into in the backline

This is something that has frustrated me for weeks, and I hope the match committee sees it too.

Also, opposition teams know that when we get into trouble the first thing we do is look to Davey. And Davey is always willing to take possession. So all it takes is for someone to run with him and our movement up the ground can be botched.

Not sure if moving him up forward is going to help us. I think what we need is to stop the reliance on his kicking. That means finding someone else we can feel comfortable with when he kicks the ball. Maybe Grimes or Bennell?
