Re-visiting the time Capsule

Thought I would re-visit this.

Cast your mind back to July 2008.

Below's side listed was named as Demonland's nominated best side for 2009, after votes were cast on best 6 backs, best 6 midfielders, best 6 forwards, and interchange/emergencies. As you can see in bold, those who are in the side at present or would be in if injury free.(ie. Wonaemirri, Garland, Jamar?)

Note* - The side voted on did not include 2009 draftees at the time of voting.

Chris Johnson is at Carltank and struggling. :P

BACKS: WHELAN WARNOCK GARLAND

H-BACKS: RIVERS MARTIN C.JOHNSON

CENTRES: GREEN MOLONEY MORTON

H-FWDS: DAVEY BATE ROBERTSON

FWDS: SYLVIA MILLER WONAEAMIRRI

FOLL: P.JOHNSON McLEAN JONES

INT'CHANGE: C.BRUCE S.BUCKLEY S.VALENTI M.JAMAR

EMERG: J.GRIMES C.BARTRAM J.McDONALD

NOTE: M.Newton just missed out on Emergency List.

We're pretty much on the mark at Demonland... ;)

It's been less than a year though. Was it not obvious, not a lot would change except a few draft picks.

The title of the thread does state, "Almost a year on." What's a month or so!

Not bad all considered.

Here's the threads that determined the above collective Demonland side, if you are interested AdamFarr: -

Collective D'Land Team thread

PREFERRED 6 MIDFIELDERS

PREFERRED 6 BACKS

PREFERRED 6 FORWARDS

Interchange Bench

HT, you've clearly got a lot of time on your hands. Nice post.

Interesting, our now captain didn't make the 22, and no Wheatly, Bell or Dunn.

BACKS: WHELAN WARNOCK GARLAND

H-BACKS: RIVERS MARTIN Grimes

CENTRES: GREEN MOLONEY MORTON

H-FWDS: DAVEY BATE ROBERTSON

FWDS: SYLVIA MILLER WONAEAMIRRI

FOLL: P.JOHNSON McLEAN JONES

INT'CHANGE: C.BRUCE Frawley S.VALENTI M.JAMAR

EMERG: Bennel C.BARTRAM J.McDONALD

My changes would be:

In: Bennel, Frawley

Out: CJ, Buckley

Also, Grimes moved from Emergency to the best 22.

Missing out: Bell, Dunn, Newton, Pettard, Wheatley, Maric.

Good call from a year ago on the players not good enough to be in the best 22....

Considering our injuries, Pettard and Maric are the players I'd next put into selection calculations.

Dunn, Newton, Wheatey and Bell are all candidates to be delisted at years end in my opinion. They have all been surpassed by younger and more talented players.

I'd also like to see Strauss and Watts play a few games by years end.

James Frawley a clear omission.

Good observation. Has come on in leaps and bounds this season. You would think he'd be in the first half-a-dozen picked now. Such is he's form.

Yes. very, very interesting. ALthough he did make the emergencies. Perhaps all the more reason for a new thread? "Is McDonald part of our best 22?" - If we could peel away the captaincy.

Some valid points you've made here sylvinator. Wheatley's injuries are doing him no favours. However, there is still plenty of season left.

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

  • POSTGAME: Richmond

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
