Rohan Connelly Round 1 Review

Was flicking through it this afternoon and thought I'd post something about the Dees. My question and his response is below:

Did the game against the Kangaroos do anything to change your opinion of Melbourne's 2009 fortunes? I'm certainly not hoping for any miracles but I thought you might have been a bit harsh in the Footy magazine a week or so back. We're not great but I don't think we'll be the worst side this year. - Rob

Fair enough Rob, I might have been a bit tough. Thought there were some really good signs on Sunday. Kids like Cheney and Jetta looked good, and I'd forgotten what a prospect Petterd is. No doubt the Dees will cause more than a couple of upsets. - Rohan

I don't really think we're going to be that great, and if I'm being honest I probably don't care (would prefer to see us bottom out for one more year then mount a serious challenge in the years ahead) but wanted to give him a bit of a dig about his predictions in the Age Footy magazine.

I don't expect us to be great this year either. Or next year. Or the year after. When he says "upsets", I suspect he means against teams like Essendon/North/Sydney/WC/other bottom-8 sides that we will no doubt go in as underdogs.

  • PREVIEW: Brisbnae

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.

Melbourne’s much vaunted finishing power evaporated at Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon, exposed for the third time in four years by its Essendon Gather Round hoodoo.
