The long wait to see Blease in action at the top level was really worthwhile. He made a Clayton's start against the Bulldogs in round 15 when he came on late as the substitute but then went back to Casey. Blease persevered and eventually won a Rising Star nomination with his pace and brilliant footskills late in the season to stamp himself as player of the future. The Demon tall man was making good strides in the ruck at Casey biding his time and waiting for an opportunity to return to the AFL when tragedy struck against the Northern Bullants. On the same weekend that number one ruckman Jamar injured his knee, Spencer damaged his ACL and missed the rest of the season following a knee reconstruction. An exciting find for the club, the high marking Howe showed many dimensions to his game. Gawn was not expected to play much senior footy if at all but a combination of injuries to other ruckmen and his own outstanding form at Casey saw him play four AFL games this year.
