  1. All the highlights video did was remind me how much I'd like Day, Gorringe, Lycett, Polec and Wingard. I'd take Smith as well. He would break my rule on drafting anyone by the name of Brodie though, so I'd be reluctant at pick 12.

The "Brodie" factor is overruled however, by the name "Smith" which is famous at our club.

  2. The Demonlanders did so well the last time we did the Demonlander's supporters preview that we thought we'd bring it back again in a last ditch stand to enable us to somehow miraculously finish in front of the Hawks by the end of the season.

So, let's have your previews, please!

The Demons travel to Adelaide at the weekend with the mission of keeping alive their meagre finals prospects. The team will need every ounce of luck to remain in the race because they rely on the results of other games as well as their own ability to achieve a rare victory in a match played outside of their own state.

I fully expect it to happen this week. Melbourne had no luck last week against Hawthorn. The weather didn't suit. The injury to Aaron Davey didn't help and the green maggots were disgraceful. This week, the worm will turn. We will win our first game in Adelaide for nine years, the Dockers will recover their form and beat the Hawks in Tassie and the Eagles will prevail in the West. I might even wake up from my dream.

  3. The Demons missed a major opportunity to establish themselves among the competition's upper echelon. In doing so, they showed they were not quite ready or up to the task.

It's very poor when you can have the ball 60 times more in a game than the opposition and have 11 less scoring shots.

    Someone's doing something terribly wrong.

  4. 3/ Why not wait for the finals? The umps will now be onto it so the tactic was wasted against a bottom team when it might have made the difference against (say) Geelong in a prelim.

Well it turned out pretty effective in a game which they won by a solitary point. Had the umpires been awake to it when it was blatant early in the game it should have resulted in a free kick to Melbourne on the forward line.

They tried it, got away with it and the rest is now history.

  5. Anyone else noticed they have given Caro a bit of a make-over this season? She has either lost some weight or channel 9 has given her a face & chin tuck. Also must have got the teath whitened & straightened coz it doesn't look like she has a mouth full of Edgell peas anymore.

Still cringe most times she offers an opinion.

Disagree about Caro. She's usually extremely well informed and always backs up the opinions she offers up which is more than I can say for people who only toss up ad hominem insults.

I actually look forward to her Tuesday evening segments on 3AW.

  6. When is the earliest we are looking at winning a premiership? 2012?

It means that we have a coach who is coaching us through development years who has shown that he is an excellent developer of young players. If he is extended until the end of 2011 then the worst thing that could happen is we discover he's not a very good finishing coach (in years where we don't need a finishing coach). If it turns out he's not the coach to take an excellent list to premiership then we'll have the opportunity to replace him before such time as we are actually challenging for a flag, and the players have been further developed by an excellent developing coach.

It also means that Bailey can focus on developing the players in 2010 rather than sacrificing development in the search for cheap wins early in 2010 in order to get a contract extension. And, in reality, after 2 years and additional 10 weeks is not going to tell us too much more - plus we'd then have to offer a 2 year contract taking us to the end of 2012.

Plus it also adds stability during a period where the media will be sniffing for blood. Sorry scumsuckers, there's nothing here to see here - so move on to Mark Harvey.

What's a "cheap win" and how does it compare with racking up a series of "expensive defeats"?

  7. Thanks for the report KC but, from the look of it, there doesn't seem to be much joy for the MFC in those at Casey. Maric and Strauss look prospects ... maybe Hughes but otherwise we would only be doing more recycling if we drew from this well.

  8. Agree totally. Though for me it's not so much the margin that we lose the 3rd quarters by, it's the fact that we don't score enough in those quarters. 2 goals in the last 3 3rd quarters. Never more than 4 goals in a third quarter. Whenever we play reasonably well in the first half or in the second quarter leading up to half time, the opposition ramps the pressure up in the third, and we buckle badly. Then Bailey resorts to moving numbers behind the ball, which destroys any chance of us actually scoring (or even heading inside 50).

Desperate times call for desperate measures. There was an item earlier this week about Melbourne players undergoing hypnotism and Aussie Wonaeamirri even thought he was a soldier when put under hypnotism.

Perhaps the club could engage the services of a hypnotist to get the players to actually play at their best - especially in the third quarter of games when they've been going to sleep lately?

  9. I'm taking the week off to recover from the celebrations after his game!

I'm just wondering if Liam would prefer to be referred to officially by his Warlpiri skin name of "Jungarrayi" instead of by a name which it seems might have been imposed upon him by the society outside his own which has an appalling record in its dealings with the indigenous people of this country. I ask this respectfully and don't want to make a political football out of the issue but I'm curious as to whether Liam has a preference as to the name the football world should know him by on an official basis.

  10. I would love to see him as a leader of this club, despite all the crap he has some great leadership qualities as was written about him when drafted. If he pulled his finger out from the start we wouldn't be wondering who would take over from JMac next year that's for sure.

The fact is that although we all had limited expectations from the team this season, we did expect that a number of our players would step up a notch or two or even more. With few exceptions, this isn't happening. Sylvia stands head and shoulders among our big improvers this season.
