I was at the Port Melbourne GCS VFL game this arvo. The umpiring was much better. By en large they let the game flow
Those junior umpires did a better job. A different level of decision making, and I’d say a vfl game is easier to officiate… but they took enough time to make the right call. And they didn’t want to be part of the game.
But hey, we should be good enough that the umpiring doesnt matter. We weren’t. We are miles off 2021. And thats not down to the umpires !

I think it’s great
if I was a young WA (or whatever) kid joining the Demons, and looked at how we cared for our potential Top 21 who in their late 20's had missed out through an everyman injury and bad luck, …. I would think … this is a good family, i can trust them, I'll stay with them
And whats more, the guy can play

That is a terrible decision
He intended no harm, but he did not exercise due care. He should have known that jumping at a player running straight at him was very likely to result in that players serious injury.
And he didn’t even smother the ball!
The AFL has to appeal. It has to. If it wants to help its own defence against not doing enough to protect players from head injury, it must fight this. It must fight for the next payer running selflessly towards goal in the spirit of the game, as Brayshaw was.
its not about whether it was a ‘dog act’ or a deliberate intent to harm, … it wasn’t. It’s about was it a tackle or smother that reasonably considered the well being of the other player. It was an excessively high risk move that could never have ended safely for Brayshaw
I am very upset about this decision. It shows the decision makers are in a different world, a different time. Where is the AFL players association?

The way he injured it, with the ankle in dorsiflexion, meaning toes toward knee, is very unlikely to cause a Lisfranc disruption. It almost always occurs with foot in plantarflexion (ballerina ‘point’ direction).
As a dweeby aside, the Lisfranc injury is named after Napoleon’s cavalry head honcho, Générale Lisfranc, who reported the injury occurring commonly to soldiers who were knocked off their horse, only to have a foot locked in the stirrup in forced plantarflexion. Ouchy. Too much nerdy-know? Not if you want to win your next pub trivia night!
And his treatment back then was amputation across the mid foot! Thank heavens he isn’t our club doctor!

I can see what the coaches are doing. But even they must be surprised by how well the fwd line worked today
PS I spent yesterday at a party with John Beckwith in the room. Not that he would have known I was there. I was too shy to give him a well done and a high five. He looked great. Ninety years and many more to come. Five winning grad finals, wow!!!

And if you go far enough back in time religious affiliation was a factor . Those links don’t bare repeating but I remember it was still a thing for some in the 60’s
