  1. Barrett on AFL website says its a football act therefore no suspension.

What an [censored]. Does that mean you can spoil in a contest and knock someone out every time?

The act of spoiling properly is ok but the act of knocking some one out is not.

The ball was likely past Maynard before he even launched. It was a reckless decision as contact was inevitable before he launched himself.

  2. Has to suspended for that for 3 to 4 weeks. Otrherwise its open season on players kicking the ball.

The ball had travelled past Maynard when he launched at Brayshaw.

It was not an attempt to smoother off the boot.

The usual approach to a smoother in that case would be expected to be a vertical leap rather than a lunge at the player.

Contact was always going to be made by Maynard once he launched.

So the decision he made was sacrifice Brayshaw and save himself by bracing rather than turn it into a down the field free front on tackle which may not have lead to a head knock.

Must be a 3 or 4 week suspension.  Very bad look for the AFL.

May well have effected the result of the game.

Given Brayshaw's concussion history this could be very serious.

The accident excuse is total BS. You hit a person's property accidently you pay. You hit a player outside the rules accidently of the game you pay. Simple as that.

    Was it really an accident?

  3. Dogs have a possible F/S as a 1st rounder. Although Croft is undecided according to the media and the bullies have a stack of talls.

GS get a 20% Academy pick discount which will probably in total equal around a pick14/15 in an uncompromised draft.

GC have already accumulated draft picks and may be interested in our future 1st plus our 22 and 34 and maybe some of what we get if some of our players leave, eg Grundy, Jordan, Harmes etc.

That would leave us with picks 5/6 (after GC bid) and late 1st rounder. Another batch of 3 good players at once - is that possible?

GC get plenty of points and another 2024 1st rounder. So they get 3 1st round players this year as we do but they will have 2 1st round picks next year.

  4. 1 hour ago, whatwhat say what said:

i'm going to make an argument against this...

...if we pick two talented players, they're going to sign the standard two-year deal for picks...

...now let's say they extend that to an initial three-year deal...

...but what guarantee do they have of breaking into a perennial finals side?

in two or three years time they might be frustrated with their lack of opportunity and request a trade for greater opportunity elsewhere; what's the chance we'd get a pick 4 or 5 back for them? i'd say unlikely - at the moment first / second round picks like jefferson (who will need to get ahead of jvr and petty) or laurie (in competition with spargo, chandler) or jordon (sparrow, woewodin, etc.) can't be guaranteed a spot in our side, and they have the added benefit of being part of our system and have, with the exception of jefferson, experienced a 'taste' of senior footy

we're far, far better off putting our eggs in one top basket and backing one player who is considered by champion data to be the best talent and to have the best underage #s since petracca to break into our side quickly and to influence our play

You make a good point which no doubt will be considered by our Recruiting and list management teams. A generational talent would be a huge pick up. Reid will be a game breaking type of player.

Getting 2 early picks though would enable us to pick up maybe a replacement for May (getting older)/Tomlinson, eg O'Sullivan and perhaps Spargo if he has 'run his race' with a Watson or a Caddy to replace T McDonald/B Brown.

  5. The WCE recruiting boss hinted that they would use pick 1 to pick up several players implying it would be traded.

They converted pick 2 last year into more picks.

So i think it will be on the market.

Do we go for pick 1 or do we go for GC's pick 4 and have 2 early picks? I am thinking 2 early picks. Depends how highly we rate Reid

We have a beauty right under our noses in Bailey Laurie.   Needs to be given a good run of consecutive games.  Very clever ball user and decision maker and no I am not his mum or aunty :)

Yes, he looked good and set up a goal or 2.  Maybe one of those players who takes some time to adjust to AFL.

Did enough to hold his spot in the team IMO.

  7. I am thinking we trade for GC pick 4. Using our 2024 1st round pick, our pick, 24,34 and possibly the pick we get for Grundy if traded.

GC have a stack of points and a 20% discount. The above should see them through no problems.

We need to keep in mind in 2025 draft we will get Kalani White a likely KPF..

Pick 4 i would go for O'Sullivan a well credentialled 198cm KPB given May is around 30. Petty is likely earmarked for Forward in 2024.

Pick 5 i would go for a gun mid if available or a small forward such as Watson who may eventually be a good mid anyway. Kosi may also play a bit more mid time as he matures.

Keep in mind compromised draft in around 27/28 for Tassy.

Pick 15 we good look at best available. There may also be a ruck available for consideration, eg Edwards.

Next year as Tomlinson, Brown and Tmc depart or play on reduced salary we may bring in a free agent to make up for our 2024 1st round traded in 2023.

    2025 we get White.

  8. North have stocked up with kids in recent drafts. They need experienced players. If they let Mckay go they are crazy - they can match an offer. Our first priority to get up the ladder was recruit mids then May and Lever as backs.

The AFL know more kids are not the answer. They need to retain McKay get a couple of experienced players in either via trade or UFA etc.

The AFL will likely allow North to prelist a couple of non AFL listed players.

  9. I would say the Recuiting and List Management Team at the Dees would be looking at making offers for the WCE pick 1 and GC 's 1st rounder.

Possible compo or priority for North will interfere with potential deals.

There are a number of WA  kids ranked 15 to 30 plus or there abouts so they may be interested in swapping for our picks to get access to them.

Last year they swapped their pick 2 for picks 8 and 12 to pick up WA kids. Although i think those picks slipped with FS/Academy bids.

GC will definitely trade their 1st rounder. They will probably want our 2 round 2 picks and a future 1st. They have plenty of 2nd and 3rd round picks already and a 20% points discount.

    What would be best:

Reid, or 2 picks around the 4/5/6 area in this draft?

Or no trade and our Freo pick around pick 5 and our 1st rounder likely 16 plus (hopefully 18).

If we make the Suns play work, we get either :

    a. Reid or

    b. 2 of the following: Daniel Curtin, Coby Mckercher, Ryley Sanders, Zane Duursma, Nick Watson, Connor O’Sullivan , Darcy Wilson

Not sure what our priorities but Curtin / McKercher pick up would be such a steal. If we pulled either of these scenarios off, we would be in the hunt at least for another 5 years.

Hoepfully we put everything on the table for the GCS first round pick.

Add Caddy to that impressive list. GC have a basket full of later picks and a 20% discount on bids in terms of points. They will trade their pick 5 or 6 but as they will not need loads more points they will look for a future 1st rounder plus say picks like we hold in the 2nd round (Freo's and or ours). It will depend on competition for the pick. Our expected future 1st rounder will be late ish.

We should go for it though.

Rumor has it that GWS will do a salary dump during the trade period. That will be interesting.

  11. I would klike to see us trade for GC's 1st rounder. Our Freo pick before being pushed back should be pick 4/5. GC's 1st rounder will then likely be 5/6.

GC are stacked with later picks and with a 20% points discount will not need to many extra points. So it may IMO be worth offering our 2024 1st rounder and our Freo 2023 2nd rounder and/or our 2023 2nd rounder.

I note that Kynan Brown has a great last game with the Chargers. He has been a late developer showing some good traits as a mid in the Championships. Late developers are often preferred by recruiters. It may mean that we know a good mid is already a certainty. So that will give us an advantage come the draft.

With the above we could have our usual 1st rounder say 16/17/18 plus picks 4/5 or picks 5/6. Plus Kynan to come in for a later pick.

If Simon and his team get it right with the above picks with some elite kids we could be set for another 10 plus years at the top. Then add White junior in a couple of years.

Knowing our drafting and list management team we will be plotting something for sure.

There is loads of talent in this draft.

Yes and North are seeking a double whammy here.

First  to add Sanders to their Next Gen Academy late - I think there is a case for this because AFAIK he has been involved with them for a number of years and has only recently officially established his Aboriginality.

Second, to bypass the updated rule that (apart from NSW and Qld teams) you can only bid on Academy players selected after pick 40 - I actually think that rule is too restrictive if you have invested long term in the player, maybe fairer would be no points discount up to pick 40. But nevertheless it's the rule and North are trying to bypass it.

FWIW, I think they'll get their way. Sanders genuinely said on Gettable he was happy to go to North, he's very god friends with Harry Sheezel and there's talk that North will select McKercher, also from Tasmania like Sanders.

North need KPs, even more so if McKay leaves. Maybe they're hoping that delivers pick 3 and they can take Curtain there.  That would pose a risk and problems for any trade of our Freo pick to WC for pick 1 because they wouldn't get Curtain.

A fair bit to play out ...

I agree getting the player you want plus a discount is double dipping. No changes please until after we get the young Mr White in a couple of years.

  13. If the AFL were playing a 'fair' game for a change that would ask GC to nominate one player out of their Academy they want to keep and allow North to pick one of the other 3 players eligible in the GC Academy.

That is if the AFL decide to award a priority.

That takes away the dilution of draft factor. The draft is compromised enough as it is. Its a disgusting joke.

The AFL has no qualms changing the rule so we missed out on Mac Andrew.

If North are given pick 3 then WCE will not trade pick 1 because pick 4 (if Freo finish in that spot) effectively pick 5 or pick 6 with Walters to GC.

So a North priority if given effectively has the AFL bending us over twice in the last few years.

However,if so,will take a couple of years at least IMO.

Next year B Brown, TMc and Tommo are all out of contract. Its likely least 2 will not be renewed. The following 2025 preseason will be Jefferson's 3rd so he should be raring to go.

100%. Ben McKay has played 65 games across 7 seasons and is 26 years old soon. Frawley at the same point in his career had played 139 games and was All Australian, and won a premiership with the Hawks at 26. So more than twice as many games and achieved both individual and team success.

McKay is injured more often than not, and when he does get on the park he’s not exactly lighting it up. He’s essentially a less durable and less successful taller version of Tomlinson at this point. If he didn’t share genes with Harry, he probably wouldn’t be on a AFL list anymore. It’s blatant corruption if AFL grants first round compo for him.

Yes, and i remember all the [censored] that was heaped on the MFC and the AFL for giving us an early pick as compo. Frawley was a gun. McKay has done little in comparison.

Can't see him getting an offer that would attract an early 1st rounder.

This draft is already compromised beyond belief with Academy and FS picks.

Fox Footy article today says there is a 4th GC Academy player Will Graham who may get nominated top 30 or 40.

  16. This is shaping up to be the most compromised draft since GC/GWS were brought into the competition.

    Its turning into a FARCE.

If North get pick 3 compensation or assistance its around a possible 6 out of the top 20 either Nothern Academy, FS or Priority/compensation.

There are some really good prospects in the top 10. We need to trade up for a second top to pick (likely GC's).

With the championship now over, here’s some indication of a top 40.

1-10. Harley Reid, Jed Walter (suns academy) , Coby Mckercher, Ryley Sanders, Daniel Curtin, Zane Duursma, Nick Watson, Ethan Read (suns academy), Connor O’Sullivan , Darcy Wilson

11-20 Archer Reid, Mitchell Edwards (Freo nga) , Joel Freijah , Logan Morris, Ashton Moir , Jake Rogers (suns academy) , George Stevens, Nathan Philactides, Ollie Murphy, Riley Hardeman

21-40. Nate Caddy, Koltyn Tholstrup, Harvey Johnston, Jordan Croft (bulldogs f/son) , Alex Holt, Archie Roberts, Will Dawson, Harry Demattia, Caiden Cleary (swans academy) , Clay Hall, Will Graham (Suns academy)  , Jack Delean, Will Lorenz, Kade DelaRue, Angus Hastie, Cooper Simpson, Luamon Luai, Will Patton, Will McCabe (hawks F/son) , Michael Rudd.

others - Jack Callinan, Koby Shipp, Caleb Windsor, Rye Penny, Billy Wilson, Aiden Odriscoll, Harvey Thomas (giants academy).

For the Dees, others of interest were:

Kynan Brown as a father son (Nathan Brown) would be looked at around pick 60 or as a rookie and would get nominated in my view. He’s a tough skinny scrapper with a huge heart and tenacity.  His skills are ok (left foot dominant) but can have some turnovers under pressure.

Orlando Turner is from NT under our NGA academy. Whilst he was largely quiet, gf showed glimpses of brilliance and goalkicking smarts to indicate he might be picked to develop as a small forward.  Rookie pick likely.

Sam Van Rooyen (brother of Jacob) could be rookie pick as well. He’s tall and lean and watching him v Vic metro , had a few “nearly moments” where we spilled marks or juggled attempts. Very nice kick for goal.  He has the base physique of a key forward and it would be good if the Dees gave him an opportunity.

Good summary, hopefully we get a pick 4/5 or 6 from Freo's ladder finish.  Pick 4 would be sensational. GC will be keen to trade their 1st rounder likely around picks 7/8 or 9.

With so many Academy and F/S picks tipped to go fairly early best for us to trade for that GC pick before the 'eyes' are picked out of the remaining players.

From your summary and cross referencing to the ESPN July power rankings there are very good chances of getting a couple of elite players in that top 10 if we can also 'nab' the GC 1st rounder.
