How we lost to that team last week is beyond me. Geelong got their grand final. Well done to the AFL and ol brother Scott for ensuring it happened. Hope they get smashed next week.

You need to remember that clubs like ours with a fairly strong and settled and young list is not going to be a good destination for young players on the fringe. Unless it’s a specific role we are lacking or unless you are an established player like Grundy, or someone happy to fill a role to remain on a list (see Dunstan), the proposition of competing for a role in a strong club with an equally strong VFL side won’t appeal to most young players. We are in a phase of existence where we can target very specific players for very specific roles and promise them success. We don’t need to throw the kitchen sink at every player out there. It’s a waste of time. I rather we target who we really need, like we have in the last few years (May, Lever, Langdon etc). One big key signing is much better than 3 random fringe players.

We signed arguably the two best players in the competition for 7 years. We are a destination club for champions.

Jackson is out of contract. Melbourne doesn’t hold players against their will. Peter Bell doesn’t run our list management. We are not stupid.

Losing Kosi would be an absolute disaster. Not just because he’s such a rare talent, but he’s also remarkably marketable and a fan favourite. Gotta put a big deal in front of him and get it sorted asap. No issues giving him 5 years. He’s only 21.

I completely agree with your points, but I think we might feel like we will have enough list spots available and that Melksham for another year is better insurance than pick 90 in the draft.
