Disagree, there were more highly rated mids and medium sized players than a bloke like Howe or our subsequent picks but they took the risk. That's what i mean by needs rather than just a blatant best available that has no thought towards where they'd fit in the team. Agree it is a draft for 2-4 years time...
-
4 players all 190 plus would indicate the Demons have clearly taken the path of needs over best available, backing in their already stockpiled midfield talent. Good on the Demons. A good mix of forwards and defenders. Cook looks good and i like the write up of McDonald.... I have always had great faith in the recruiting department and nothing has changed here. Bring on 2011!

Spot on........ Yep, or Grimesia, Chipia, Bailia......

A tragic loss not only for Aussie and his family, but as it appears, for the local community too. My thoughts go out to all who are affected, especially little Aussie. It is just another sad reminder that life is short and you never know when it will all be taken away from you. We may have lost 600 games of playing experience but there is one great big stark life experience for everyone at MFC to make the most of everything you do whilst you can still do it........... (and then look at the president and work even harder)!!!

.....another Jack. We don't have enough.......

I believe Newton hung on as the last resort back-up if god forbid Jamar goes down, Spencer needs help or isn't good enough and Gawn and Fitzpatrick aren't yet ready. That and perhaps as a last resort back up forward or defender (i just threw up in my mouth a little bit). Other than that, all were spot on and once again the footy department have shown they will not be influenced by sentiment. I can see us drafting a damaging half back, a big strong tall forward, another hard inside midfielder and another tall defender who will all be stars and in the team in round 1.............

Searching for Demons: Part 3
Grandson of a gun replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
Damien Yze- Brother of........... Played for Northcote Park in the DVFL (now NFL) for a few years. Kicked a bag of goals. Was highly skilled but had a bit of a soft heart and was known to have a hissy fit if things didn't go his way. Believe he is/was playing up the country lately. Brett Zorzi- Came from the Northen Knights U18's- tough as nails, skilled strong medium defender. Probably just a bit slow for AFL. Ripping bloke too! -
To those whinging about getting the raw end of the deal in relation to crowds/off-field remember this, of the 10 Victorian clubs, we finished 8th last year. That means that unfortunately for us there are stronger Victorian teams at the moment who will get a more preferential deal for crowds /off-season stuff because the AFL see them as winning more games. GET OVER IT. From an on-field perspective, we have what ON PAPER appears to be a very good draw. I don't care where we play as long as we are winning. We all want to see this team improve. Going on Bailey's theory we want to see 12 wins in 2011. This fixture gives us the possibility to do that. This fixture means that we may very well be a chance to play finals. THAT IS THE BIGGEST POSITIVE FOR THIS GREAT CLUB.

Rubbish yourself. Have a look at Collingwood Peanuts. Aside from 1 year they have had bugger all top 10 picks. Yet with astute draft selection they built a premiership team. Melbourne and Richmond have had far better picks over the last decade and whilst i believe Melbourne has done pretty well especially recently, the Tigers were the opposite and have paid a massive price for it. As for the quality in the 2004 draft, take a closer look and you will see there were plenty of quality players selected, but the Tigers simply made some bad choices. Exactly, and just to repeat it again: There is am enormous amount of hard work yet to be done. Yep. My case in point is Collingwood. Ha. That rings some bells. I can't wait to see Melbourne doing the same at Jimmy's place to celebrate all the hard work that went into achieving our 13th premiership!

Just read an article highlighting the epic proportions of the Richmond stuff up with their 2004 drafting strategy when they had 5 picks in the top 20. Richmond's Recruiting Nightmare There are lessons to be learnt here and it just goes to show that it is not what draft picks you have but how you use them that really matters.

It will be remembered as "The Kick Heard Around The World"...................

Also. If there is a kid with the name Jack then we should also take him. It's looking good for my son in the 2026 national draft.....

With it becoming increasingly likely (and some say definately) that Jack Viney will a) be an MFC F/S selection in 2012 and B) at the very least (on current performances) a very good midfielder has the FD factored that into their thinking for this (and next) years draft strategy? Would that actually give them the impetus (is that correct spelling???) to lean towards taking a calculated risk on a KPF at Pick 12? I disagree with you E25 when you say carte blanche that it has to be best available. Needs is absolutely a very strong factor in the decision. I think it is a combination of both. And with the likely addition of Viney in a couple of years, i think (and hope) that we look at our need for another key tall over another midfielder. Mids and medium sized players are a dime a dozen, big KPP's are like gold and with our draft positioning only getting later (with our continued improvement) this might be our last legitimate opportunity to have a relatively early crack at a quality young tall. Your theory is what Richmond followed a few years ago (Tambling) against Hawthorn (Franklin). I would much prefer a risk on a Franklin (read KPP) even if at the age of 18 he wasn't rated as good a player as Tambling (read mid/medium sized player). Bigger picture approach IMO.

Working on the theory that they will only delist 1 more for a total of 3 draft picks this year, i wouldn't be surprised if it was T-Mac. We have key back depth with Warnock and Martin(remember Martin played his best footy there also) and also remembering Grimes to come back in at the expense of one of the blokes who played there in the latter half of the year. PJ- like him or loathe him (and i'm the latter) still provides the most ready made back-up for Jamar. Spencer is still a work in progress and the others are too far off the mark at the moment. Spencer at this stage is also useless around the ground (moreso than PJ). I would love to see them delist both and use 4 picks but in a compromised draft i don't see that happening. With the old equation, what is likely to provide better value for MFC, a 4th round speculative pick or PJ/T-Mac. Other draft years they may take the draft pick but i just don't think they will this year.

The new tackling machine. I only hope every MFC player attacks the ball and the man with as much vigour as this kid!
-
With the club planning on getting another (probable) gun young mid in 2012 ie Viney, has that also factored into their thinking now in relation to taking the chance on a tall. I believe it is a calculated risk that the club should take.
-
It is a great coup for the Demons and it is good to see that it is finally WE who are poaching from other clubs. And re Jack: if the kid is half as tough and honest as his father then we have a great player in the making. Hopefully he kicks better than his old man

THE KASPERSKY CUP SHANGHAI SHOWDOWN
Grandson of a gun replied to rusty_kingswood's topic in Melbourne Demons
Spoke to Jack this week. He said his back was great and he was hanging to get back into it..... -
100% Right. Desktop warriors (myself included) are quick to criticise and spell doom and gloom yet a week ago our recruiting department was the best in the league. How about a little show of faith people. You're starting to sound like the ferals at Punt Road..... And this is spot on too. Hutchy needs to come up with something to justify his ridiculous pay packet. Anyone who has had experience at any form of negotiations knows that you start at the absolute best end of the scale for you and then work down to a satisfactory compromise. North have started at the top end hoping they will get a bite or a slightly better mid point than they realistically know they will get. Don't be surprised if one of two things occur. Melbourne do a trade to shuffle their draft picks around to give them a pick around 25-30 OR Melbourne are fairly certain that Bruce is going and therefore know that they will have another second round pick to bargain with. I believe Gold Coast must finalise the contracted players situation by Friday and given that trade week doesn't end until Monday, MFC have plenty of time to work out a satisfactory deal.
-
Pick 12 goes nowhere except earlier. Period. Hale is worth our second round at best although i'd prefer a straight swap for Maric and maybe a late pick.
-
Probably an accurate summation. MFC had higher signing priorities before Bruce. I don't mind if he stays or goes. Wouldn't mind the extra pick though.
-
Every time i look at Trengove i thank god that Jordie kicked straight. He should be made an honourary life member of the MFC for such a gift!!! (and even funnier is that he was the only listed Richmond player not to get a senior game this year!)
-
Tappy is the one i want to see. Given we still lack some physical size and grunt, i can't wait to see what he brings. I only hope Blease stays injury free and gets a full pre season. Then anything is possible. (That also goes for Grimes, Morton and Gysberts) Fitzy to play maybe a couple of games at the most- his body still has a long way to go. Gawn to play at Casey all year in readiness for 2012.
-
Why? You want to see 160 interchanges a game and a rolling scrum? That is the way it was heading. Why not test how good coaches and match committee's of the various clubs are at using the rules to their advantage. Disagree entirely. It will open the game up more because players will tire and not be able to chase as hard. Therefore players will have more time to dispose of the ball. It will also encourage players to get fitter, like the old style Robert Harvey's. we will see a return to gut running (Scully's forte) and less of the congested crap we've been dished up the last couple of years. Thought this may be a problem too. That's why i was actually in favour of the cap rule. I don't know if the sub player can be brought in at any time or only after an injury (although it isn't hard to manufacture hamstring tightness). If it is anytime then perhaps it won't be as bad as if it is strictly for injuries only. It will come down a bit to the club managing reserve promotions well. It is the similar fate that is often dealt to the emergency player on an interstate trip who misses the Casey match but doesn't play for Melbourne. He is often overlooked entirely the next week.
