  1. Perhaps they should consider selling memberships at newsagents instead, there are several areas where our support is fairly high and they could offer the newsagents $5 for each one they sell. This would have to be tacked on to the price of course but it would mean you could buy your membership on a Saturday or Sunday if you were too busy during the week.

The Internet is open on Saturdays & Sundays. I'm yet to hear a reasonable excuse along the lines of accessibility of membership.

  2. What's the best thing about living in Melbourne, I ask. "Melbourne Football Club," he replies.

That's funny. When someone asks me the best thing about the Melbourne Football Club, I say "Liam Jurrah"!!!!

Dead set brings a tear to the eye.

My God we're going to have some fun over the next 5 or so years.

  3. Yes, we must've heard the same interview, I understand it that the players will make use of the recovery facilities over the road at AAMI after games at The G, so provided there's no fixture at AAMI at the time we should be able to hold post-match functions at AAMI that players will be able to wander up to once they've finished recovery.

I suppose the other possibility would be having 'viewing parties' when MFC has interstate games, again, this would obvoiusly be dependent upon AAMI Park fixturing.

  4. Thanks Inner Demon. Either way and whatever it's called, it is a MASSIVE win for the MFC. We are closer to 'Home' than we ever have been. Can't wait to move in.

Can you shed any light of what social club facilities we will have?

To the best of my knowledge AAMI Park won't have any 'social club' like facilities. Though I guess that would depend upon your definition of the term.

There certainly won't be a licensed/gaming venue within the complex. There will, however, be hospitality areas that I suppose the Club would be able to use, but obviously this access will be dictated by the schedule of the arena in terms of soccer, league & union games. In that aspect, it is really no different to the MCG.

  5. Would appreciate it mate! I know the oval is Gosch's Paddock. However I thought that name referred to the ground Collingwood train on. The oval we are on (by the looks of Schwabby's tweetpics, is the one that has recently been laid and built closer to Swan Street/Batman Ave. I may be wrong. Anyway. While the name is Gosch's paddock, the oval does not have a name. Jim Stynes Field or Oval has a nice ring to it.

The oval is the property of the Melbourne & Olympic Parks Trust, so we don't have naming rights over it.

Our situation would be equivalent to that of Collingwood in their battle to try and have Edwin Flack Field named Bob Rose Oval.

  6. MCC Members have already paid to get into the GF.

Only half of the reserve is balloted and the rest is available for walk-up.

There's no way on God's green earth any additional seats would be balloted or any of the existing allocation would be set aside for MFC members.

Yes, we have the largest following within the 100,000 MCC Members, but roughly 80% of the total membership are NOT MFC supporters. It's sensational that we get all the boosts that we already do from MCC, but interfering with the Grand Final access of 80% of the membership would be crossing the line.

  7. "Remarkable" on a MFC match day, to allow the club with oldest connection with the MCC to have a small stall off to the side of foyer - why do you say that?

YES the current MFC board has done much to address the relationship between the two clubs.

Could we coax a few more MCC members to sign up....probably

Is that what this thread is about? Yes.

Because the MCC themselves never, ever, do any direct selling of anything at all in the reserve.

I think sometimes people lose sight of the fact that the MCC are the significantly larger and more important club in the relationship between the two. We do not, and will never, call the shots. Nor should we.

  8. But for the avoidance of doubt, if we keep winning and the droppable players keep performing and dont need rests, then nobody should come in - including a fit Morton and Jurrah (other than Bail, who deserves to come back in based on this years performances)

Putting aside the improbability of an indefinite winning streak with no players dropping in form or becoming injured. The idea that players of Morton & Jurrah's calibre once match-fit would be held out of the team is misguided.

It's terrific that players like Bail, Dunn, Bartram & Bennell are playing good football, in a couple of those cases it's about time. But unless they're flat out dominating games and render themselves somehow invaluable, they are the kinds of players who will unluckily find themselves making way for superior players like Cale & Liam. These are the realities of playing in successful side.

For analogies, see players like Simon Hogan at Geelong or David Armitage at StKilda who last year played very well when given chances but were dropped for higher rated teammates when they returned from injury.

  9. I'm also aware of the MFC stall in the foyer (where existing MFC members pick up their scalves). This is good, but maybe not proactive enough.

Just sayin, even a few more thousand would help the stat, and seems accessible.

    Well...what more can they do???

There's a membership stall there. They don't have to line up outside at the larger tents. That's pretty much the extent of what they can do. Frankly it's remarkable we're even allowed to go that far.

It couldn't possibly be easier for MCC Members to sign up:

They get targetted emails with the offer.

They have a box they can tick on their yearly renewal which pays both memberships in one go.

They have a stall right inside the entrance they can go to on gameday.

Any MCC Members we're missing is not because the Club isn't being proactive enough, it's because some people are just apathetic. The only tactic we're missing is sending Jordie McKenzie into the MCC pre-game to warm up by tackling some non-MFC members and forcibly extracting $50 notes from their wallets.

  10. From today's AGE: MFC / MCC

"10,000 MCC members have taken out MFC membership" If i recall this would be about half of all MCC members who list themselves as MFC "supporters".

I've posted on this before: Carrot for MCC members - we would be in FANTASTIC shape if we could tap in to more of the other half...perhaps some kind of focused drive within the members area on game days?

There is a membership stall in the lobby of the MCC at every home game. It is often manned by injured/reserves players. MCC/MFC Members can also collect their scarves from here.

  11. Meesen could only be promoted onto the Senior List if another player is moved onto the Long Term Injury list. Rookies can't be promoted & demoted at will to cover the spots left by Senior players on LTI.

Consider that by the time Meesen is fit (4-6 weeks) and then plays the 4+ weeks it would take to possibly hit form Jurrah will be coming back so Newton or Spencer will be brought back off the senior list.

Barring more long-term injuries between now and then we would theoretically have Gawn & Tapscott still on LTI being covered by Jordie and Newton/Spencer.

  12. Cant wait to see Cale return.

I think some people have forgotten just how good he is.

Im hoping he has put on some muscle while he has been out.

This always bobs up somewhere with guys with leg injuries. Having a lower body injury does not result in a player being put on some kind of Beefcake 3000 weight gain program where they just do bench presses and bicep curls all day. All the players are on a full load weights program to start with. If anything, a lower body injury would see them cutting into their weights program with rehab.

Cale is a wiry guy, much like his brothers, he is never going to come out all of a sudden and make us all go "Woah!! When did Stephen Tingay come out of retirement and switch to the #10 guernsey?!"

  13. I wrote in February that the first NAB cup game was critical. This was for our membership drive and furthermore confidence. With our belting against Freo and subsequent NAB games- I thought we would struggle, especially after being belted by Hawthorn to beat Richmond in Round 4. No way did I believe we could beat Brisbane- I truly thought we would get belted. I also did not think we could get 32000. Roost it declared we would. He thought we could get 33000 odd. Well- I thought he was dreaming. We may still. The huge win- going to China as well, lays down a very solid platform for our October match and possible members and sponsors. We could even be a final eight team this year. However, we are young and may falter later on. But the foundation is there. Better team than what I thought we were.Your honest thoughts??

What is your obsession with the exhibition game in China??? You sometimes sound like you feel the season is just a big warm-up for this event. Our perfromance in this hit-and-giggle is largely inconsequential.

  14. I appreciate the differences and we couldn't hope for our draft to ever be the spectacle the NFL Draft is, but I'm more talking about having a panel of experts discussing each pick in some depth and analyzing how things might progress rather than totally ignoring proceedings, having an unrelated conversation and interviewing a mid-level 8 year veteran on matters totally unrelated to the draft.

  15. Irrelevant time of year I know, but as a big NFL fan I'm currently enjoying the sensational ESPN draft coverage and shuddering at the memory of the beyond pathetic Fox Sports AFL Draft coverage last year.

I know the AFL look all around the world to take leads from other sports and I really hope they recognise the quantum leap improvement that needs to be made in this broadcast and that this is how it's done.

  16. its just like melbourne demons not being able to pay debts and get no sponsors we were just lucky enough to get through it

    Huh???

This is NOTHING like anything that has ever happened to MFC.

This isn't a team having financial difficulties, it's a team having 5 years of its history being erased totally for massive fraud.
