Interesting article on Jackson Thurlow, Geelong recruit who played his first game yesterday. It shows up the gulf between where Geelong and Melbourne are, and helps explain why we've had such difficulty developing players, and why simply putting good young players out there (Viney, Evans, Matt Jones, Terlich etc. included) isn't enough: "The senior boys said that they would try and get me into the game early, so I can't thank them enough," he said. "The way they go about it and the way they involve everyone in it, there was no reason for me to not get a kick."

Serious? Every team has young players, that's not what it's about. It's about the lack of experience at the other end. We have no (i.e. zero) players with over 150 games this weekend, and our newly elected vice-captain in Garland has just over 80. When you look at the Geelongs, Hawthorns, Swans, they have a LOT more players up around and over 200 games, and that's where the experience is and is needed. Seeing you mentioned Geelong, apart from the younger players you mentioned they also had 8 players with more games than our maximum-game player (I'm taking the liberty here of discounting Rodan and Davey, given they're no longer, it seems, first 22). And not just a few more either, plenty of those have 50 - 100 more. Throw in Selwood (at 142, just 2 games less than Sylvia), and Rivers when he's fit ... it's a completely, completely different story. To put it another way, it'll take us 4-5 years to match the experience that Geelong had out there.

There are clear and I would have thought, obvious reasons why the players who have been picked have been included - if you don't want to see them or acknowledge them, that's not an issue with the FD. Sellar was more than solid in the back half of last year as a KPD, was more than solid last week at Casey down back after a week of through illness, and deserves his chance. We were stretched by Brisbane and their talls, and having a third big defender makes sense, especially when the opposition starts resting their rucks in the forward line. This also reflects on the absence of Watts down back, as well as the fact that Dunn, another of our tallish defenders, seems to be moving into more of a run-with defensive role.

It's also called selecting players around the opposition line-up, and Rodan is at the very least, solid-bodied.

Could be interesting, even if we're still a week away: The Tigers were already under the pump after losing three games on the trot, and the absence of Cotchin (knee), Vickery (concussion) and Grimes (foot) hurts their chances of turning things around. They have also lost Ricky Petterd to a calf problem. Vickery should be OK with a week off, but perhaps the others might need more time ... We certainly need all the help we can get, perhaps the injury gods will throw a little something our way.

Just a little update courtesy of Brian Royal: "We're really pleased with Maia's progression. He's now progressed to training with the main squad. And we're hoping within the next couple of weeks that he'll be playing in the Casey Development team."

Just pointing out that there are two sides to every argument, and that applies equally to the Magner situation. (and the Neeld one ...)

Toumpas and Sellar are not interchangeable, either in age, experience or the position they play. With Dawes back in the side, and Gawn's ability to float forward, Sellar can go back to the position he was more than decent at last year, KPD, taking the second or third tall. Toumpas, Magner, Fitzpatrick etc. would NOT have helped us deal with their 3 talls. Having said that, I don't know that both Davis and Sellar will play, and perhaps if Dixon hadn't come up OK for them this week, the selection could have been different. Re Sellar: "He showed he had recovered well playing in defence and had a real presence taking six strong marks. He helped set up a lot the team's movement with his composure and clean skills."

That's clear. As Royal put it, he just needs to get a few (more) games under his belt, as he hasn't played all that many full games. Also, so many here lament that we "gift" games to players: Toumpas was good for 3 quarters last week, and pretty ordinary for much of the week before. Needs to do it consistently for 2 or 3 matches at Casey before the lynch mob forms.

Not possible to just stop and think before posting? Jesus C indeed: "we're well aware that Gold Coast will play three tall forwards, so that's why Davis and James Sellar are in the squad."

It can be argued otherwise. They're a lot faster than what he is (just for starters). Magner is not the saviour, and if he was, he wouldn't be running round in the two's. He had a few decent games early last year, but was eventually found out at senior level. With another year under his belt now, who knows, but he'll get his chance.

Agree. The only hiccup in that though is that Casey have a bye this week, so getting a better appreciation of Clisby etc. will have to be put on hold for another week. As for the rest of the discussion, we'll have at least two outs: Grimes and Trengove. Dawes comes in, which could leave only one place. Surely we'd start to look at trying for some kind of consistency, there were a few new/young players in against Carlton (Viney, Kent, Strauss), it's just not ideal to keep throwing the team around with 4 or 5 changes each week. They may feel that they want a bit more experience against a young side, so Rodan or Davey would be the obvious choice. I'd also take Jetta over Magner, better defensively and better disposal. Or even Toumpas, from all reports, he has (re)found his mojo somewhat over the last couple of weeks at Casey and he's not just a throw it onto the boot player. Would also be a perfect opportunity for him to learn from the little master. Finally, Blease was also good last week in the VFL, and is probably in contention, we could use a bit of zip around the forward line. Still, we'll soon see.
