Bottom age tall already playing at the champs while not draftable until next year, a further 18 months of growth and development away? Who is telling you this?

I hope he’s a good player as much as anyone! Especially as a tall defender which we need with May at his age.

Ive read it a few times now around the forums (Bigfooty draft board has been fairly consistent with reviews on him being fortunate to have made the state rep squad) but my best information comes from a friend who works in the under 18 and grammar system down here in Melbourne.

Ive got my fingers crossed and we’ll definitely know by this time next year, but I’m just not holding my breath.

Can’t  say I do. Bit surprising we haven’t heard anything since he was included in the Allies team.
Any info from our draft gurus?

I’ve asked around a few places and the reports I’ve been able to get haven't been particularly positive.

Sounds like he isn’t looking too likely at the moment.

Stengle would be a massive steal. He is close to the best small forward in the league. But we are stacked in the SF department (Chandler, Kozzy, McAdam, Spargo) to name a few. Will he solve any problems that we currently have? Maybe a little, but our focus should be squarely on securing a midfielder as a FA.

I don’t know that we are stacked in the small forward department. We have a number of them on the list, but outside of Pickett (who we want spending more time in the midfield), our small forwards don’t have a lot of score board impact.

he is clearly looking for a big, big pay packet back for a team based in the city of melbourne

peptides should be throwing significant coin at him; they need a small forward

I reckon another small forward who can hit the scoreboard wouldn’t hurt us at all either.

Definitely not interested in Stengel for $800k for 5 years though.

A draft stacked with midfield talent is perfect because that has to be our number 1 priority.

Agreed - frustrating though that we also  have a poor forward line and an ageing Steven May and Max Gawn.

Our list management team has a challenging task over the next few years given Tasmania will be pilfering a few upcoming drafts..!

Another couple of midfield depth players i think we should be looking at that can fill the void left by Jordon and Harmes is Toby McLean and Rhys Mathieson.

These guys both can play at the AFL level and at a pretty good standard for back ups.

Que the Rhys hate, which i do not like the guy either.

I’m not sure that Rhys Mathieson would pass the relevant testing protocols any more..

He was an  All Australian at Under 16 level last year so he is more than "any good".

He can play at his father's old club and has the opportunity of learning ruck craft at Melbourne under Max Gawn.

Is there anything else that he needs to know?

I hope he is, although I have heard a few things suggesting that he might have snuck into that squad on his name rather than his output.

I’ve also heard that his dad is keen for him to select the Dees if given the opportunity.

Hopefully he is a gun and makes it to us!

  8. Kalani does live up on the Gold Coast doesn’t he? Or in Brisbane at least.

Is he actually any good though? I have read mixed reports as to whether he’s touted as a top end talent, or likely to go later in the draft (or even rookie draft).

  9. I don’t mind playing developing forwards in defensive roles for a while.

It can help in a bunch of ways - freshen them up a bit, learn what makes life hard for a defender and it can also help a bit with intensity and physicality (which Jefferson lacks).

No room to hide in the backline - you can’t drop a mark or miss a contest/tackle and you can’t waste a kick.

I feel like none of the team after us have shown or been rumored to be interested in him. So i'd be confident he will be there at 11. As another poster said, pick the best player outside of him at 6. and get him at 11.

GWS are reported to be interested with the pick after ours.

Probably not hugely significant, but if be angling for their first pick of the 2nd round, currently 23.

This often has good currency with teams often willing to part with future firsts for it as well if a player slides through that they like.

We could flip 6 into WC F1 and perhaps another F1, or take 11 and 23 to the draft.

Still, my preference is to take the best player available at 6.

Only way I'd be angling to stock pile picks into next year is for trade purposes if we have a near certain fish on the hook.

Whilst I’d be open to the F1 trade (in the hope it is pick 1 or 2, I’d be very pleased if we just took Curtin.

Agree that their pick 23 this year could be a good option as steak knives too, given it will probably be a third round pick by the time all of the bloody NGAs and concessions are handed out..!

If West Coast are desperate to add a top 6 pick, they will be the ones adding the steak knives.

It all comes down to how each club rates Curtin.

If WCE want to trade then let’s presume they rate him as a top 2 or 3 pick this year and as a Perth boy they’d be comfortable getting him now, rather than waiting 12 months for an unknown kid a pick or 2 better.

So yeh I agree in my scenario I’d hope the steak knives are in our favour - but I can’t see it being anything significant.

  13. I’d do it.

If Curtin made it to us and WCE wanted to trade, I think in reality it would look along the lines of our 2023 pick 6 plus our 2024 second round pick (attached to Syd) for WCE 2024 first pick.

Maybe a few steak knives back and forth but that’s about it and I’d take it.

According to BF today concerning how many live picks clubs have. I Have not checked it.

    Melbourne
    Starting list size: 36
Out: 5 (Hibberd, Dunstan retired, Grundy, Jordon, Harms trade/FA)
In: 3 (Billings, Fullarton, McAdam trade) - plus D.Turner possibly promoted
    Current senior list: 34 players
    Current rookies: 4 Cat A (McVee, Sestan, Turner, Verrall) + 2 Cat B (Moniz-Wakefield, Farris-White)
    Live picks: 4 (6, 11, 42, 93)

Sounds like we’ve also delisted Milkshake this afternoon, with a view to adding him back onto the rookie list.
