Shaun Smith: Joel can fill Lever's Role
When you are a defender and are significantly outsized by your opponent, WTF do you go man-on-man against said opponent. Start 2 metres behind, then launch yourself in to the body to spoil. If you do it right, and it's not hard to do, you will never give away a free kick, and you take away the height disadvantage.

Match Preview and Team Selection - Round 12
I'm going to act like a true Melbourne supporter here, and whinge about them having Viney on the Collingwood side of that poster.. Ethan, if you want to know what you will look like when you turn 70, this is it. Would it be possible to open the coffee tin to get some ashes of your old man, and run them through a DNA machine?

The irony is that it took me about 45 seconds to reply with that link, when it could've taken me 2 seconds to reply with "He's 25"!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Gaff Would've taken around 15 seconds to type this question, when it could've taken you 10 seconds to google Andrew Gaff and got the answer yourself.

11 Down, 11 To Go
I think we will win 6 of the next 7. Not sure who we drop theme against, could possibly be this week. I am extremely confident that we will be Geelong when we play them next.

All Australian watch
No way Melksham makes the squad. He's playing very good for us, but nowhere near what it takes to be an AA. This isn't being critical of his output - his consistency is helping make us a better side.

Filling the hole left by Jake Lever’s injury
I wondered the same thing DC. With Weid back, it is a potential option. That said, I do think it will be Smith or Keilty in this week, with the former being the front runner. The bye is going to come at a very good time for our team. Gives Goody a chance to tinker with things this week, and if it works, then he can fine tune, and if it doesn't, then he has a fortnight to come up with something else.

Filling the hole left by Jake Lever’s injury
Horses for course for me. There aren't too many teams that have 2 dominant key forwards, so depending on who we play, that will determine how we set up that week. Not ideal (in that there could be a change each week), but that's where we are at. For example, this week I don't see the need to bring in Frost, especially if Reid doesn't get up (which is likely by all reports). So bringing in a Joel Smith might the logical answer. First game back from the bye we have Port, which may require a change, given they have Dixon, Westhoff and (to a lesser degree) Watts.

Brendan McCartney - Moved to the bench
Even Caro was finding it hard to accept, but did concede, on her show the other night. The reality is, we're just one loss away from the "typical Melbourne" of "fall from grace" headlines.

AFL 360 (30/5) - Riewoldt and Murphy
The problem with being 3rd on the ladder is that most sides that we play against at the moment, are below us on the ladder. Does the media want us to drop to 6th, just so we can start playing against more sides above us to get a true idea where we are at? And personally, I don't give a flying if we continue to beat up on poor or under-strengthed teams. If we win a GF, the quality of the opposition will never be written in the history books.

Dees Lead in 16 Categories over past Month
I always remind non-Melbourne supporting associates of two reasons why they should be scared of a MFC flag; 1. When we win one, we have historically won many in a short space of time. 2. I have 38 years of flag arrogance but up, and I will be unbearable to them when we break through.

Talking Dees on the Monday Night Footy Shows (28/5)
I think even singing the song after the game, around the centre circle (which was painted like an Aboriginal flag). It was a very mature rendition of the song - no silly faces, etc. It was also a very respectful version given the ground upon the were singing it. I get the feeling that Goody has belted in to them that we are still yet to achieve anything, and until such time, we need to keep our feet firmly planted on the ground.

Post Match Discussion - Round 10
For me, premiership teams have quality in certain parts of the ground; ruck, clearance, midfield depth, key forward, forward half pressure, intercepting key defender, quality ball disposal off the half back line. If you tick all of those boxes, you are well on the way to being a serious contender. We also have a couple of players who we can rely on to do a shutdown job if need be (Vince in particular). We have every one of those areas covered. In many of those areas, we go close to having the best in the league. Gawn is clearly the best ruck going around, Oliver has to be one of the best clearance players in the comp, our "first choice" midfield of Clarry, Viney, Jones, Petracca, Brayshaw and Salem runs as deep with quality as any team (and they are all competitors), our two key forwards work together better than any team, we have players like Spargo, Fritta, Melksham, ANB and Hannan who just all love to put pressure on, Lever is showing why we paid what we did and is working so bloody well with Oscar, and then you have Lewis and Piggy just sweeping off half back and hitting targets. Don't get me wrong, we will lose some games in the back half of the year, but I seriously can't see any weaknesses.

Changes vs Adelaide
Can someone tell me why the player dropped from last week would be made cary-over emergency this week? Tyson was obviously dropped for performance reasons, yet he isn't given the opportunity to work on those areas the following week in the reserves. And to add insult to injury, they (Casey) were playing an insipid team which would be the perfect chance for Tyson to work on his game. I rarely criticise the coaching/selection/etc, but this decision is just plain poor.

WHO IS THE BETTER #13
Voted Jako because he was a proven match winner. Oliver isn't quite there yet, but that will be a strong added to his bow in the 50-100 game range. I still think Oliver will retire the best Melbourne player I have seen in my time, which is a time that includes Flower. Yze was a very good player, but was typical of the Melbourne teams in his career. HIs refusal to handball also meant he was suspect to high pressure. I think Oliver has already proven he is a far better player than Adem.

Clarry vs Cripps
One is an absolute superstar of the competition already, and has a lot of elite footy ahead of him. He will go down as a club best. The other? Well, he is the above too, but has a little bit extra. What's that? He wears red and blue, and he does things with the football that I've never seen any other red and blue player do.
