And presumably this time get a church lawyer.

$6m/case... Ridsdale alone would be more than a quarter of a billion dollars. And at this stage there's no evidence that the Dog's hierarchy knew.

  2. Essendon, J Hird, Zero votes.

It was an absolute disgrace by the umpires, but on the other hand Essendon are still sooking it up about umpiring every single game 20 years later. These things affect the psyche of a whole fan base.

    Anyway, fun times laughing at Essendon aside;

The key issue is that the AFL is not governed properly. There is no clarity of process or transparency of decision-making, which is only made worse by pretensions of transparency and good governance. It is entirely clear to everyone that dozens of small and large decisions which have material effects on clubs' fortunes are made by executive order and heavily influenced by shady dealings and personal connections.

It is a bit like the ubiquitous conspiracy-theory culture in Malaysia. It worse than, say, Egypt because in Egypt every level of authority just walks around being openly corrupt and impulsively oppressive, so everyone just knows to keep their head down or get beaten. In Malaysia there are all these layers of pretense about being a modern democracy with a functioning parliament, so everyone gets told 'here are the rules', which they then try to follow but get shivved in a bureaucratic back alley and suddenly discover that their farm has been owned by a palm oil company for the last 20 years and they have to hand it over and owe back-rent. Hence, every superstition, conspiracy theory and paranoia you can plant will grow beautifully.

    To put it in formal language;

The Australian Football League is a superficially quasi-Democratic institution which in substance operates on a hierarchical patronage system kept in check by the non-dynamic loyalty framework of it's ritual clans.

(The AFL pretends to be well governed, but is actually an old boys network, and the only thing keeping it together is that fans rarely switch clubs, so it is not feasible to bleed smaller clubs to death)

  3. So, something that confuses me if what happens if a F/S nominee is selected by another club right at the end of the main draft? Say, pick 88 of an 88 pick draft?

There must be a policy in place for this because otherwise it would be inevitable that a situation like that would happen.

I guess I'm wondering, if we have K Brown nominated, and only one spot left after 6 and 11, are we kind of obliged to take him with our one remaining pick in the 40s?

Only other solution I can think of is that the nominated club must use their next live pick in 'any' draft, which would obviously refer to the rookie draft.

With that in mind... possible pick trade shenanigans still to come with our 40-something pick? Bump it right back to 70 in exchange for a future 3rd or something?

Arguably THE best innings in an ODI ever. I stopped watching when Marnus got out because at 5 for 69 who’d-a-thunk?!?!

I bet you were on the way home during the comeback against Fremantle, too.

Wait... no, It's WCW I'm talking to. You were probably so close to the action Woneaemirri's sweat splashed on you when he did his celebration jump.

  5. I really like him, particularly if we miss out on Curtin. A succession plan in defence is a priority. However, I feel like he would be a steal if he slipped to 11 but overpriced at 6.

Could be one to watch for with pick trading shenanigans.

Still probably better than the slop they serve up from the good people at Netflix. New releases read like a list of Hollywood classics from the forties. It's now become a collection of b grade movies from Mongolia and 500$ "doco series" about mass murderers. The only people who this defunct streaming service appeals to these days are executive Producers.

For authentic, vintage rubbish you need TubiTV, but I'm pretty sure it'll install a virus that makes your washing smell funny and pokes holes in your flyscreen. I ended up there after seeing 'Bad Movie Bible' on youtube, which appears to be hosted by the unacknowledged offspring of Margaret & Dave from the movie show.

Ironically, 'Mystery Science Theatre 3000' is on Netflix.

Not really a fan of reading pick 6.

I would however contemplate trading pick 11 + future first in exchange for the Cats pick 8 + future second.

Oh, now that is an excellent death ride. And actual 'off a cliff' death ride.

If our future first is 18, and their future second is from the bottom 4, the laughs would never end.

As for pick 6; if it is Curtin we're talking about, I'd hold him and think we got lucky with the draft flow. Would be a key figure in our 2028 premiership.

Davidson being a real grub. Shoulder to the head and arguing and carrying on with Dees players, showing no sympathy to an injured player.

Between the idiotic carrying on and the injuring opponents with front-on high collisions and being ugly as f', she reminds me distinctly of a certain criminal from Collingwood.

  9. Fair bit of 'rolling shoulders as you chase' body language suggesting they aren't quite switched on so far. We'd want to get a grip on it because Brisbane are launching knives at speed into our defence.

Couple of important intercept marks there. They weren't technically difficult but a fumble for either could have sent the game into early crisis mode.

In fairness, chook, not just injuries but combination / clusters of injuries Petty Melksham Frittata Brown McDonald could not have been worse and we only failed by a couple of shots in both finals.

Since I had old Essendon stats open already, I took a quick look at their 2000 injury run for comparison.

5 players played every game, 7 players only missed one game, 7 more played at least 20 games.

Our marking forwards (Brown, McDonald, Petty, Fritsch) missed more games through injury this season than Essendon's entire starting 18 in their premiership season!

Kevin Sheedy, love him or loath him, was the past master of it. 10 premierships at Essendon in 27 years says it all.

4 premierships. Though your point clearly stands well enough on that. Plus there is some bonus credit for beating Hawthorn in consecutive Grand finals. I reckon even Sam Mitchell has that on his bucket list.

So, here's a fun 'would you rather'; Would you rather the 84/85 double premiership or the 1993 'baby bombers' evolving to the 2000 'greatest'?

I wonder who our conceptual Hird-Mercuri-Misiti-Fletcher-Wallis core that would play in both be? And on that note - I would never have thought that there were only five players from the supposedly very youg 1993 side who were still around for the 2000 win.

    I'm running with the thought; 2021 premiership players on our list now who would realistically be young enough to also contest a 2028 premiership;

True youngsters are Petty, Spargo, Sparrow, Pickett, Rivers and Bowey. Then of the mature players Petracca, Oliver, Brayshaw and Lever are all contracted to at least the end of 2028, so count them in. Fritsch with his brain-and-skill based play should last that long, too.

11 players realistically in the window for both a 2021 and 2028 premiership! Noice. 🦄

  12. One day it'll hit a point where a legal case will be made by a club or even a player arguing some form of 'restraint of trade' case, and it probably won't succeed but would be worth it for the documents required to be presented to court.

AFL Inc. is some kind of shady 'non-taxed but also not-a-not-for-profit for governance and oversight requirements' incorporated body so exactly what its legal scope for favouritism and the spoils system is unclear.

Suffice to say, if the AFL had been incorporated under the rules for not for profit organisations, there'd be a whole bunch of people facing civil and even criminal courts.

  13. 2023 was the first time in 5 years for Gawn and 6 years for Oliver that either of them didn't crack ten Brownlow votes, and in both cases injury was the core of it.

Meanwhile, Petracca has been going at a vote a game ever since the proverbial penny dropped in season 2020.

Strange to think about Jack Viney's Brownlow counts. His early career numbers stifled by the sheer weight of losses and being second behind designated 'played well in a poor side' champion Nathan Jones. Then as we began to improve he was heavily slowed by persistent injury problems, before finally he was left as the third arm behind two of the greatest midfielders of the modern era.

If he'd played for St Kilda over the same period he'd have twice the Brownlow votes (see Jack Steele) but on the other hand he'd have no premierships and be playing for St Kilda. Poor Mr Steele.

First thing I thought of was that hideous CFC. The colour is right I'd like us to have a Melbourne red and blue banner to cover it up for the day should we make it and give us more of a home game feel.

Honestly, we don’t need to do that in order to have a home game feel. We played our finals (other than the GF) there last year and it was absolutely amazing. The atmosphere couldn’t have been better. The CFC emblem didn’t make any difference at all. Besides, I can’t imagine the CFC allowing their emblem to be covered up by anything.

I'm thinking a laser projector of the MFC imprint over the top of the CFC. They're just similar enough that it could work for a couple of hours of trolling the Blues.

  15. This thread is closing in on 30,000 posts.

I feel like we should have some kind of party or ceremony. Maybe a contest to decide who gets to mark the incredible milestone.

Can the mods lock the thread automatically at 29,999?

Or maybe 20 before that and then we can have a start gun for a mad rush to all post something and hope that it hits th 30,000.

This thread has touched so many lives, we must acknowledge this special moment.

  16. Just flinging the thought around - how would the likes of Duursma and McKercher compare to pick 1s of past seasons? How strong would the pick 1 hype be if there was no Reid? (nevermind the gold coast academy kids)

If 6, 11 and a future first is what we've put forward for 1, would we put forward 6 and 11 for, say, pick 3, guaranteeing one of those two players?

I think the talk of us taking Sanders with 6 stimulated me because as good as he is, he is not the missing ingredient in our midfield, while Duursma and particularly McKercher looks like exactly it.

I don't like being patronised Goffy. I'm entitled to my opinion and I didn't appreciate your dismissive comment. I was steaming last year about Jackson. Everyone knew he was leaving yet we continued to play him when he was playing single digit games. The club was at fault not Jackson. I don't want this to happen again.

The idea that a club should stop playing a player because they might be or even probably are leaving at the end of the season is just plain childish and self-defeating. If you don't like being patronised don't throw your toys out of the cot.

And trying to give me the stern word about respecting my elders doesn't help. It just makes you look entitled.

  18. Fun fact; when Oscar McDonald was swung forward by Carlton, he delivered a statistical match for what we got out of Harrison Petty in 2023.

Of course, OMC only played one game, but at least now we know what Freo are basing their decision on.

I suspect he'll do fine for Freo and they wont regret picking him up. The two year contract is also good for all involved because Fremantle basically have two years to get it together before half their list retires or leaves as free agents.

    Can't be true surely...

Probably double what we are paying May.

The premium they paid to ensure North got pick 3 and chose to not match the bid, saving Essendon whatever trade value it would have cost them.

Wildly foolish stuff. North performed a masterclass of sulking to make everyone forget basic rationality for just long enough.

  20. I think the key thing about top picks vs low picks is how much of your list you are willing to commit to using to churn through the 'possibles'.

Clearly in the last ten years almost all clubs have preferred to retain depth-level established players to limit risk, rather than have an extra third or fourth round selection coming through on a regular basis.

Hypothetically, with zero injuries you could happily have 20 kids on your list and be cutting a third of them every year as you figure out whether they are up to AFL level, meaning six or seven new draftees annually. With four late picks every year, you're going to find (or create once they are in the system) some gems eventually. It also would mean vast amounts of loose salary cap for your stars. Only downside would be the footy dept resources required to both develop those kids and to keep the culture up with so many 20-year-olds sitting on the fringe.

Of course, in a world where allegedly an intellectually disabled child ate an apple therefore we must all suffer, injuries happen so you can't be so extreme. But I think there's a case for a pretty significant 'tail' to a list for the sake of searching for the occasional gem and for keeping the salary cap sharp.

Of course, my 'and Carthage must be destroyed' line will always be that the lower-tier and reserves levels of Australian football should be getting a massive boost of resources to transform both the available career development paths and the available depth and late-bloomer bounty for the AFL level.
