The '21 again feeling
finals are going to be carnage this year and at least one of the top 4 will go out in straight sets. bulldogs, cats, blues and yes even saints can cause an upset on their day. i still think it's melb, Collingwood, daylight and the rest, but the finals are going to be very tough this year.

What they are saying at Arden Street
Despite all of this, they are undoubtedly the least appealing, most unmarketable team in Victoria. They had one of the best teams of all time in the 90s, were prime time every Friday, had Nike throwing money at them, and played in at least the Prelim for like 12 years straight. They sure have done a lot for the game. But that they are in the position they are is either an indictment on the club, or a reflection of the club's irrelevance.

Aliir Aliir & Lachie Jones in Concussion Protocol
Port is arguably the most arrogant AFL club for a while. And i don't mean Geelong and Hawthorn arrogant because they talked the talk and walked the walk. Port have this weird sense of entitlement that is quite comical. Assume it comes from having Koche as your President and Hinkley your coach. Not at all surprised by this really. They function in a bubble. Crom will win a flag before they do.

Membership Tally 2023
Membership numbers in isolation mean nothing but one member = one additional person on the mailing list. Mailing lists holistically are worth A LOT especially to sponsors. Sponsors don't care whether they are $1 or $1000 members. You sign up, they have your details. Collingwood goes to a company and says "We have 100,000 people ready to be emailed, SMS'd and called to talk about your brand, from us. How about it?" It's 30k more than Melbourne. Sponsorship these days to the every day joe is just a number but from a business perspective it's getting people in so the club can say "We have this many people willing to spend money with us." It represents purchase intent. We have a good engagement level of membership to attendance but overall in terms of money coming in *beyond* membership, it makes a difference.

Training Ground?
Zero chance this government puts any money into a development in Caulfield of all places. Even if it does have significant public benefit.

Farewell James Jordon
Read my response above. Fairly certain if you've been on the list uninterrupted (no delisting, rookie listing etc.) you need to have been at a club less than 8 years AND be in the top quarter of salaries at the club to qualify for UFA. Even if he hadn't been delisted he would be UFA. EDIT: OMG IT CAME TRUE, I'M A REAL BOY! https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-news-2023-list-of-free-agents-out-of-contract-players-salary-cap-trades-every-club/news-story/977c549fb1a919805b2b0a6f1d64d85d "A restricted free agent is an out-of-contract player who has played nine or fewer years with their current club and is in the top quarter for salaries at the club."

Farewell Brodie Grundy
where there is smoke there's fire. these rumblings rarely don't occur as they've reported. will be paying 50% of his salary at another club next year.

Didn't know he was delisted. But regardless, even if he hadn't been delisted, he'd still be an UFA.

Farewell James Jordon
Spargo isn't overrated. In fact he's barely recognised. He's not played as a deep forward and suspect Goodwin plays him in a very specific role. There must be something about him and what he does that just isn't seen to the natural eye. He's quote strong in the core and rarely turns the ball over by foot and hand. Of all the "experienced" players his clanger rate is the lowest over his career.

Farewell James Jordon
Restricted = Less than 8 years at the club + in top quarter for salaries at the club. Given Picks 1-20 all get 102k as a base in their first year and Jordon was pick 33 he'd likely only be in the 200-250k range given he probably started on a base of around 60k.

What They Are Saying at Westlakes
Crom are a good mid-table team. They're falling off as the year progresses but they looked really good in patches. Almost close to top 4 quality. Suspect we will (should) deal with them easily this week. But I rate them with GWS and Hawthorn as clubs I'm not generally worried about but am still kind of sort of worried about (see: Alice Springs game).

What They Are Saying at Springfield
I'll tell you what, it's the chirpiest and most hostile the AFL Members has been at a Melbourne game for a looooong time. Maybe because it was a Friday night. But lots of words were exchanged in standing room the whole night. Lions supporters giving us absolute [censored] with 10 minutes left. I proceded to absolutely lose my [censored] when Viney kicked that goal. You could smell the win at that point. Actually saw a Lions supporter standing in disbelief at the final siren. We've been there. The St Kilda game at Marvel in I think 2015 comes to mind when the Saints kicked the winner with seconds left after it looked like we were certainties. But it was amazing how quickly it changed. Good on the Lions supprters for bringing such amazing support, the old Fitzroy supporters sure can be loud. But I really gave it to them at the end after coping it all game.
