well.... it is the off season !! lol I dont hink many necessarily take Hutchy's comment as gospel but look upon it as a point for starting comparisons of worth etc. I would tend to feel with the recent efforts of the FD in mind these past years that many are more than assured the FD will do its utmost to secure a fair deal for a player it regards as more than handy to us going forward.

doesnt kick goals ??... Matty Scarlett might differ with you....though i concede he hasnt been marvellous of late. He can both kick and ruck.. Not world beating I grant you. Apparently the FD has a high-ish opinion of him. Theyve been pretty good last few years

this is how I read it as well...its a game of shadows... we want Hale.. they really ( probably..or might ) want Hill.. or just tyre kicking. Any which way..they dont have enough lollies to get all they want. So we can force their hand possibly..which as others assert will give us the breathing space to pursue Hale alone...or near to.

Wrt the Sqawkers I'd suspect they may run out of lollies to trade given their interest in Hill etc. Hale might prove a bridge to far li iting any genuine ability to participate in a Hale trade.

Whether oppo coaches like it or not having Hamar in the square will require attention and a suitable match up, doesn't matter which one ( either the Ha or the -mar) The knockon is easing the job for the likes of Watts Jurrah or even Dunn etc. Tall timber with thick trunks still commands respect, doubly so when they can actually mark and kick. Very interesting to see how it fleshes out.

Agree with that .. They'd both spend most of the game on field and the point about Hale rucking up forward is a very handy bonus. Jamar is very mobile for a big boy and would provide a decent contest should (when) ball rebounds quickly by opposition. Makes for a headache for oppo team/coach. Good point e25

Even if true, and I don't agree what relevance to Bates as a required player ? Matty has only mustered slightly more that half a dozen better than handy games in last two seasons. Is very up and down but do concede some is due to fitness/injury. But none of that matters if you're really driven by the bottom line of success. If you were touting more than the occasional game where he stood out you'd have more currency. This sort of return is more the exception than the rule. Hardly satisfactory nor sufficient to stem the tide of other players knocking on the door for spots.

Much better ... Could have said that in first place. As HFF Jurrah and Sylvia have him covered... Both have much better defensive skills as well as attacking games. Bate seems to enjoy the 50-60 arc as a link up attacking style utillity mid.. Problem is he will be down the list now for any midfield role ... Lots of competition there now. Bate has a great kick and when left insufficienyl covered he can damage from a distance .. Buts be nice that's pretty much a 1(1-1/2) trick pony territory. He gets exposed when matched up.

You're not a required player simply because you can't get a trade ... That makes him untradable !! Required means we need you at the MFC to play . The reality is with Watts Jurrah Petterd Sylvia Dunn Wonna Green , Davey at times and say Hale/Jamar standing the square there's not a lot of grass left for others. Bate is going to have to reinvent himself with a good "others side" (defensive presure) but this is the preserve of those who are both agile and quick to react; neither are his forte.. Just how I see it

In 09 the team list was different to now and what will exist in 011. ... So where does he play ? What does he add to the structure ? All I keep hearing is he's a good player down on form who can get back .. What's his positionand why does HE get it ? Anyone ?

What many are failing to answer is where on the ground can he find a home ? forward ? too inconsistent and no defensive side . Outside the arc I.e. taller utilitarian mid ? Lacks real speed and agilty. Forget him in defence . So where ? Personally I'd have looked to trade him not re-sign him. Right now he has some value.. If he fails to fire next season he's a list clogger. possibly a little harsh but I don't follow this team to be mates with them !!
