kicking across the body is fine when your natural kicking foot is on the fat side banana kick is best utilised when natural kicking foot is on the skinny side and the angle is severe if i remember correctly bartel was on the skinny side hence he tried a banana kick instead of a straight kick as he is a good straight kick he probably should have used this option as the angle was not so severe I can't remember whether harry was fat or skinny side, but presume skinny if he used a banana

the place kick is an entirely different thing and irrelevant in our game it also has no relevance to the banana kick (checkside kick)
