Does the rise of McDonald spell the end for Rivers?
s-t-i-n-g-a replied to Range Rover's topic in Melbourne Demons
Given our over supply of backs and shortage of forwards I wouldn't mind a swap of Shultz for Rivers. They are similarly as effective in their respective positions and of similar age. They both have their limitations but structurally this would benefit our side. I think Shultz has improved since crossing over to Port and whilst no star would be an efficetive 2nd big after Clarke and he a lot cheaper than Cloke leaving plenty of cap space to lure a mid. Anyway it wont happen because Rivers is a FA and Shultz just signed a contract. -
Just how good is Caddy?

Contract discussions put on hold for eleven Demons

Also perhaps his move forward has been as much about plugin a gap as it had been seeing how the back line functions without him? -

I think the problem for rivers is that I don't think we can play him, Frawley, Garland and T Mac all at the same time, it's too top heavy and all of those guys are too good to be in the VFL. Plus we have Sellar as a back up who is more flexible and can pinch hit in the ruck and much cheaper. It's a pitty because he is one of my favs but I think there is some sound logic behind it. Our back line really needs a rebounder rather than another tall. What if we lost Rivers but gained Goddard? I recall from when Needld was at the Pies they used to single Rivers out to try and get a one on one as they thought he could be beaten one on one. He clearly plays his best reading the play and zoning off. The concern might be in finals where it can be more a one on one style of game. Having said all that I really think he was having an outstanding year down back and has been brave doing the team thing up forward. Interesting times. -
Todd Viney - Head of Recruiting
s-t-i-n-g-a replied to Hazyshadeofgrinter's topic in Melbourne Demons
Didn't we have some top people from our sponsors Drake involved and on the panel? They might have known a little about recruitment and the merits of any processes to follow...- 74 replies

On the Couch - Brock talks about 'tanking'

I had to read that twice. -
What point was On the Couch trying to make?

I thought Johnsons comments were fairly measured and a reflection of the time. -

So both offered 3 year contracts but the blues offered 450k more over the 3 years. Is this a fact? -

It would be good if someone asked him what was the difference between the two contract offers from Carlton and Melbourne? -

Are Carlton trying to get us out of the race for Cloke? -

Why is everyone so sure GC want another u17? I know thye did it last year but O'Meara was an exceptional talent and (they would have thought) better than who they would have got with pick 4 this year. But this year they have pick 2...is the player that they could get in the u17 draft (Martin?) better than who they would get at number 2 this year? Im not saying weather I think they will pick Viney, but I am just not sure the u17 draft is as good an option this year as it was last year for them.

Dont recon we will will get him cheap...because GC will just say fine if you want to play like that we will bid for Viney.

Great effort brad!

The three main reasons we lost are: 1. Disposal 2. Disposal 3. Disposal The players had a dip but they just made some really poor unforced shocking errors that really cost us. The other thing was Clarke or someone to step up to fill the void is lacking. We got it in there but it was way too easily marked or cleared by port.

I was at the game too, every time spencer went near the ball it was comedy hour! He has a crack but skills are no where near it.

Did anyone read the dean cox article on the afl site? He basically said in 2010 when they introduced a defensive game plan the team and in particular himself as an older player struggled to undo bad habbits and learn the new style. We know how they went in 2010. But he said that it laid the foundations for what they are doing now. I think there is a school of thought that they just decided to do this in 2011 and it clicked for them but in reality it took a year of pain to get there.
