I think this is very much the best deal going at the moment, which will be difficult for others to match unless they pay significantly overs.

GWS is probably our closest rival to snare 6, but they are not giving up 8 & 10 unless they are going after a specific player

Curtin going to #4 is probably going to really test WC's resolve. They probably don't swap without having at least 2 top 10 picks and late 1st rounder / early 2nd rounder (current or next year). They will push hard for Sydney's Pick 5 for Barass so that they can secure both Reid and Curtain, but Sydney would be derelict in their duties to go for Barrass (who is 27-28) with Pick 5. I think they just Himmelberg as a FA an use Pick 5 to bring in some youth.

I think we are right in the drivers seat this year and JT will need to make a decision around 4,6 for 1 (Reid) vs taking a Mckercher/Sanders, Duursma / Watson.

I'll kick up a stink if Roos get some form of compensation this year as it will be the 2nd time in recent history where we have had a top 5 pick and lost out due to a priority pick.

Nevertheless we will have 1 or 2 of Reid, Curtain, McKercher, Sanders, Duursma and/or Watson and that is exciting!

We can't really complain about priority picks can we?

  2. Its a great place to watch the footy. Particularly if you're on the grandstand side and watching the footy with the sun setting on the West Macs in the background. Admittedly the times I've gone its been sunny!

  3. If it was not one of their all time greats what contract would Freo offer a 32 year old who struggles to get his body right to be available to play and then when he is available and plays struggles to have an impact?

I really like JJ but as a winger, Hunter is in a totally different league. His gut running, positioning and field kicking are all A grade. JJ is potentially more versatile but as a winger, he is a journeyman.

For mine, we must keep Kozzie and Rivers. I’d like to keep JJ but if he or even hee and Hames were the price of keeping the other two I’d be okay with it.

    Hunter is a specialist winger.

    JJ is a utility.

  5. Freo needed to explain to Jackson and his family that it would be better both for their list build and his chances of joining a team in contention if he stayed at Melbourne for a few more years.

And it would be better for his development to stay at the Dees and further develop his still raw ruck and key position talent rather than move west now at a high draft and salary cap cost where he would inevitably be under much more pressure when he is nowhere near the finished product that can perform to that cost. Maybe its the player manager role to raise that rather than Freo.

Then if he still says he wants to join Freo its an interesting business decision they face.

    Voted yes by proxy.

Down the road I wouldn't be surprised to see the AFL step in to ensure more stringent protection of members' emails. Sharing emails to private individuals - and with zero protections -  should never have happened under any circumstances.

Corporations Law would have to change.

  7. Hopefully Hunter can stabilise his life away from football and get back to playing his best football. That'd be a win for him, and a win for us. He's an elite runner, a smart runner who gets to dangerous positions, strong overhead and a nice kick. If he is playing near his best footy he will really help our ball movement. Good luck, Lachie.

Four: Gold Coast are incompetent. Rather than split pick 7 and send Bowes to market, possibly with a 200k wiped off his wage they offer pick 7 straight up.

Essendon, North, Hawthorn are desperate  for high picks. Desperate. They’d do exactly what Geelong have done with the contract for a far lesser pick.

The Suns could’ve split pick 7 and to 2 picks in the teens and used 2 picks to dump 2 players they didn’t like and saved even more money.

But Gold Coast are just ordinary and don’t seem to be getting any better at managing their list. Even as their team improves and matures they seem keen to make more mistakes.

Bowes is under contract. He chooses the club he wants to go to. He wanted to go to Geelong.

Can someone explain the Bowes deal to me? I know Geelong are doing the Suns a favour by taking on the contract, by why is there such a high pick thrown in??

Bowes isn't a spud so how on earth is it so heavily weighted in the Cats favour?

It really does seem like a case of the rich getting richer and massively unfair for the rest of the comp.

One - Suns are recalibrating player payments to allow for increased contracts for some of their young stars and attracting recruits.

Two  - Bowes is on 800K a year for 23/24 because of ill thought through backending. If they want his money out of the cap he is contracted so he chooses the destination club.

Three - The Pick 7 is price for taking on the bad contract in full.

Similar to Dees only paying Pick 27 for Grundy and not taking on his full contract.

I truly believe the club did not handle the Jackson deal well.  We got way unders in my view.  Let's see what happens now with the little remaining trade period and draft.

What would you have done differently to make Freo pony up more draft assets?

I'm happy with the deal that we ended up getting

There was what he was actually worth vs a truckload of potential and/or what we originally paid for Jackson (pick 3)

In raw terms an underperforming player with no more than C+ output wouldn't normally attract 2 x first rounders and a 2nd rounder

    Not even close

At one stage I fell into the hype of generational talent but is that really going to happen?  I've changed my mind on his future worth and  reckon his best might be B or B+ (or less)

This year he learned very quickly that opposition ruckman play for keeps. He lacked physicality and lacked presence

For a supposed prototype midfielder of the future, he fell way short

How many 20 year olds play in the ruck at AFL level? Most'll still be developing at VFL level till their mid 20s.
