That's a surprise because the reports from the Under 18s was that his disposal was excellent. Perhaps he had a bad first day. -
Freddie has permission to train with us.

The Waylen (aka Zyrus) Manson Thread
Whispering_Jack replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
Up in Darwin yesterday, the Waratahs, with star forwards Brendan Fevola, Waylen Manson and Kayne Pettifer all missing out on the action, slumped to the second successive defeat, this time against lowly Wanderers by 38 points. Manson has now missed the last two games raising questions in some quarters as to whether he has been advised to "lay low" in advance of the rookie draft. According to this item in the NT News Manson is still confident of being drafted next week - Tah's Manson still confident of AFL call -
Foxtel's NITV (Channel 180) is showing games on Sunday from the Ngurratjuta Lightning Carnival played at Traeger Park, Alice Springs. The competition covers teams from different parts of Central Australia and includes womens' games as well. Each year 90,000 Indigenous people participate in the game and while these games include diverse types of players, the telecast (including commentators from the Marngrook Footy Show) is well worth a look.

I would never forget Bobby Davis - a true legend. This is what I said in the Foxtel thread:- "I'm already looking forward to this with anticipation. I really did enjoy the last attempt by Fox to run a dedicated AFL channel. Clinton Grybas was a definite favourite along with Grumpy Old Men.They don't make them like Bobby Davis any more."

Of all the journalists and all the football administrators in the land there is not one man with the cohunas to stand up and expose the shameful collusion between the AFL and GWS and the connivance of those involved in the Scully Scandal but there is one woman who today does make a statement - A Giant miscue lost in the crowd Caroline Wilson. I salute you!

I've come to realise that for those of us who remember the good old days, it's the rookie draft and not the national or PSDs that holds the fascination for the true blue footy fan these days. Back in the days of yore we used to look forward to World of Sport on a Sunday morning and there were so many highlights even in the summer time. There was the wood chop, the tug of war, John Dobbie's lawn bowls report, Freddie Villiers doing soccer, Uncle Doug and the creme de la creme - the Bemm River Report with Lou Richards and the late Jack Dyer. They used to talk rubbish in much the same way as we do on this thread. The segment was mainly about football rumours of all sorts with a few little stories about which player was thinking of changing clubs. Most of the time, as is the case today, the rumours simply weren't true. Occasionally, there would be talk of a smokey from a bush town who was built like a brick schyzenhausen and could kick a bag of wheat over a silo - the prototype of the player you're hoping to pick up in the rookie draft. So I'm done with the national draft and the first 97 selections going to an evil new franchise and count me out of the PSD with its 3 only picks. Give me the rookie draft and a banana smoothie come November/December and I'm back by Bemm River with Lou and Jack hoping to hear some news about the recruit who can transform our football club from a sow's ear to a silk purse. That's what Waylon Manson/Aaron Hall etc. are all about - a 2011 rookie that one day will be the next big thing.

Players available in the Pre Season and Rookie Drafts
Whispering_Jack replied to alpha33's topic in Melbourne Demons
Sheahan's TAC Cup coach is now an assistant at the MFC so it looks as if he wants to give his former player every chance to make an AFL list. I think the pick of the players not selected would have to be small man Shane Nelson. He looks a likely type to me and I'd be happy to have him on the list. -
WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JAMES SELLAR

Tweet from the man himself:- -
Leaving aside Scully's comments which are reflective of his lack of maturity and his naievity, Demetriou's statement is a complete disgrace and unbecoming of a CEO of what should be the most prestigious organisation in Australian sport. Truly appalling.

Redleg is our man on the spot at training and no doubt he and others will report in later but he phoned this report. The players were using the footballs and the drills look to be very organised and intense with lots of instruction and the players are working hard. A few of the boys are well muscled - Beamer and Jones are positively rippling. Cale Morton looks stronger in the body but not necessarily in the arms. Max Gawn is a man mountatin - Tom McDonald looks strong and Matty Bate looks amazingly fit. Redleg says that he thinks he might well start in the midfield. The players have dropped into five or six groups are doing new drills in the separate groups involving different coaches. The drills look well prepared and the players know the routine and order as each change of drills happens. Mitch Clark, Michael Evans and Jack Trengove were behind the goals doing drills, they're now running laps. Jack Grimes, Neville Jetta, Kelvin Lawrence, Ricky Petterd, James Strauss and Luke Tapscott are also in rehab and doing laps and Liam Jurrah is doing laps with a trainer pushing him along at the end. He looks a bit bigger and stronger. Tom Couch has a strong upper body and is training well. Absent as far as Redleg could see were Clint Bartram, Aaron Davey, Jake Spencer and Coin Sylvia and, understandably, there was no appearance from any of last night's draftees.

Barry Prendergast was interviewed on SEN and ... he sounded happy. He said there were diverse opinions opinons about the draft and so clubs approached their selections differently. In previous years there was an element of picking out needs but tonight we pretty much went for the best player at the picks we had. Rory Taggert is a big bodied midfielder that we were looking for and we're happy with him. Josh Tynan is a half back similar in many ways to Jack Grimes and this clould lead to us using Grimes in the midfield. James Sellar was in the demographic that we wanted - mature talls and Sellar and Mitch Clark have done that for us. Sellar has some versatility and is happy to come to Melbourne. The change of scenery gives him an opportunity.

How many days to the rookie draft?

First smokey. -
Chad Wingard - great get for Port Adelaide.
-
First smokie - Huddo as compere due to the Chief's injury.
-
Oh dear.
-
He's ready to go in round 1.
-
And I reckon that's the art of good drafting. There's a fair chance that at least one of our three selections tonight will be right out of left field - someone who has barely been mentioned in the phantom drafts and who is hopefully, as good as Jeremy Howe.

I must admit I've been keen on him all the way but when I think of it I wonder if there's room in the team for both he and Liam Jurrah since they appear to have similar styles and would take similar roles. We also have a crying need for midfield types and even though our selections are unlikely to yield us the eliIte, I think we should be trying to find someone like a Sam Mitchell or a Dane Swan at that time in the draft. -
Why are you surprised at Demetriou's comments? Surely, it's logical he would say those things given he and the AFL were in on the whole scheme from the start?
