Stats that Matter (or a truck load of bulldust?)
Whispering_Jack replied to Demon Dynasty's topic in Melbourne Demons
The figures tell us what a great pick up Dom Tyson has been for us and how ignorant the muppets in the media are who make a big deal about our choosing to take Tyson and pick 9 for pick 2 and a lower selection. If N Jones and Tyson keep going the way they have to date, both will make the shortlist for AA selection. I also think that in time there's every chance of some chemistry developing with Jack Viney, his old teammate from the Oakleigh Chargers. -
Round 5: Predictions & General Discussion
Whispering_Jack replied to Machsy's topic in Melbourne Demons
So I ended up watching bits and pieces of tonight's game and what a bore? Brisbane are struggling with injuries and, after a terrible opening quarter they rallied to hit the lead in the third quarter at which point I think if I had opened the windows I might have caught a whiff of melting plastic from a neighbouring Tiger fan's microwave. To their credit, they rallied and had a good win and full credit to Ricky Petterd who was excellent for the second time I've seen him this year. Of all of the players let go by MFC in recent years he's been the best performed. On the other hand Beamer, who was the sub for the Lions, didn't do much other than prove that he hasn't learned a great deal since the time when he first crossed over from Geelong. Still refuses to lower his sights, tries to kick the ball too long or too high (effectiveness 44%) and really doesn't have a team sense. But that was obvious during his time at Melbourne. Pity and I still miss Scotty Thompson who plays his 250th this weekend. -
One thing contributing to the issues at Carlton is an expensive recruit who isn't performing It’s black and white: Daisy’s no Blue

Match Preview and Team Selection - Round 5
Whispering_Jack replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Of the seven named on the interchange Kennedy-Harris, Matt Jones and Kent are not named for Casey so unless someone doesn't come up due to injury it looks like one of Evans, Fitzpatrick, Jetta and Toumpas will fill the last spot. -
Dom Barry is the mystery injury of the week.

Round 5: Predictions & General Discussion
Whispering_Jack replied to Machsy's topic in Melbourne Demons
The Brisbane v Richmond game shapes up as a shocker. We're all better off watching the replay of our game v Carlton tonight. -
I've said elsewhere that I believe he's earned the elevation. It will be interesting if he gets a game, how he will react on the field given that until the Jack Trengove announcement, his mindset would have been that it was highly unlikely he would get a chance until mid season. I wish him luck and a turn around of fortunes if he plays this week (or next). It's a great story for Nev.

Sorry Redleg but you of all people should recognise that you are conflicted and have no right to be judge and jury on this issue. You responded to a reference of Bub's which identified the offending party by his initials and you are therefore both guilty as charged. Forty lashes each by stockwhip at Romsey at midnight on Saturday.

Two things I take out of round 4 which are Melbourne related and which come from watching some replays. 1. Melbourne's improved form cannot be explained only in the context of Carlton's poor effort. In other words, I believe there is definite improvement the way the team is currently structured and there is room for substantially more improvement with time, experience and the influx of personnel from the injury list and a few currently at Casey; 2. The influence of Sandilands the beast of Fremantle suggests to me that a fully fit Max Gawn could be similarly built up into a dominant ruckman over the next couple of years by which time he could well be a significant weapon for the club (disclaimer - I am a sponsor but that did not influence my opinion).

At least they could start a fan site called "Van Diemensland"!

The schedule is only up to round 11 at this stage so there's a chance there will be more in the second half of the season.

The next Casey Scorpions game will unfortunately, clash with Melbourne v Gold Coast (although the VFL will be half over when the game at the G starts). The Scorps will be away to their neighbouring municipality of Frankston in what should be another close one for them. The team selections will be posted when available. The VFL has announced its schedule of ABC TV games and, as usual, Casey doesn't get much of a run with the first televised Casey game not happening until mid season despite the fact that the Scorpions are regular top four finishers. The game will be the Round 11 fixture on Saturday June 21 against reigning premier Box Hill Hawks at Casey Fields.

The obvious team to fulfill the AFL's plans is North Melbourne which actually wants to play in Tassie.

I had some reservations about the stuff up with the ADRVP but the appointment of two law-enforcement experts spells trouble for Dank, Essendon and Cronulla. Sports Minister beefs up anti-doping panel -

Whispering_Jack replied to Rod Grinter Riot Squad's topic in Melbourne Demons
Yes, he has had chances but he has also had setbacks like long term injuries and limited pre seasons. Since being delisted, he's been married, enjoyed a good pre season and done everything right during the practice matches and the early Casey games. He's clearly in line for elevation off the rookie list and if his form warrants, I don't see a reason why he doesn't warrant another chance. -
Brett Kirk - Roos' successor?
Whispering_Jack replied to The Song Formerly Known As's topic in Melbourne Demons
Kirk is said to be doing well in his role as an assistant at Fremantle under Roosy's mate Rossy Lyon. The connections are all there. I liked the way Kirk played the game - he was a clever footballer and off the field he comes across as clever, articulate and intelligent which means that he has some of the ingredients to do well as a modern day coach. -

Jack Trengove out for year with navicular fracture
Whispering_Jack replied to Arrow's topic in Melbourne Demons
Understand your question but in my case, it was an injury that didn't hurt to start off with. I got it initially running down Flinders Peak and slightly jarred the ankle. It took a long time before there was pain and even then I shrugged it off. I can't speak for JT and he's a professional athlete and not an amateur part time runner but there was a time when footballers were all urged to play beyond the pain barrier. We know now that that's foolish. -
I think differently. Disband all Victorian teams with the exception of Melbourne and Carlton and let Tassie, Canberra and the NT have a team each. Then it would be a truly national competition and we would thrive ias the best team from the best football state.

Jack Trengove out for year with navicular fracture
Whispering_Jack replied to Arrow's topic in Melbourne Demons
The Trengoves are runners. Jack's sister is a marathoner so I'm sure that running has been part of their daily regimen for years. I wonder if one of the physios/doctors out there could confirm my theory that the injury is one of those that might have initially happened some years ago and slowly took time to manifest itself. In Jack's case, I first noticed he was having problems not only with his running but also the depth of his kicking when he came back from the Dangerfield suspension in early 2011. This might explain difficulties that later became evident and were not properly diagnosed or treated at the time. I ask because that was my experience with problems I had with my foot that surfaced in the early 90s after 15 years of jogging/running but didn't come to a head for another 3 to 4 years. -
The push towards a Tasmanian AFL club has been moving at a snail's pace and one would hope that by the time it's reached the point where it's taken seriously, we might not be a "weaker" club. On the other hand, we can see from the way the AFL has arranged the programme (i.e. first three home games against interstate clubs) there's an arguable case that they're trying to further weaken us by attrition so that we'll end up begging to be relocated to avoid going out of business.
