As soon as I heard Adelaide insisting there was no way on earth that it would consider trading Dangerfield that we were in with a real chance.

A Guide to Hird v ASADA Appeal -
Today starts off mainly all about GWS Bulldogs-Giants Battle A tense battle between the Giants and the Bulldogs is set to kick off today, as the Giants attempt to secure Ryan Griffen from the club. The Bulldogs insist they will hold Griffen to his contract, despite him requesting a trade. Mark Whiley and Kristian Jaksch The Giants could send Whiley, Jaksch and pick 19 to the Carlton in exchange for pick 7. The Giants would then use picks 4 and 7 to attempt to trade with the Bulldogs for Ryan Griffen. Joel Patfull The Giants are also today expected to secure Patfull from the Lions in exchange for pick 21. That pick could then be used in a deal to secure Allen Christensen from the Cats. Swans fuming The Sydney Swans are fuming today after the AFL told the club they cannot trade any players into their club this year or next, unless they are prepared to bring an immediate end to the cost of living allowance. Paddy Ryder Ryder says he feared for the safety of his unborn son at the height of the club's supplements saga. In an extensive interview in the Herald Sun, Ryder says he felt "badly" let down by the club. WJ - meanwhile Melbourne waits on a number of the above and other deals to pan out before its own deals can be finalised

The fourth day of the eight days of official trading saw the first two trades done:- First trade Hawthorn lands the first official trade of the NAB Trade Period, landing GWS midfielder Jono O'Rourke. The Hawks gave up picks 19 + 40 to GWS in exchange for O'Rourke and 43. Second trade Carlton small forward Jeff Garlett has been traded to Melbourne. Garlett and pick 83 were given by the Blues in exchange for picks 61 and 79 from the Demons. Ryan Griffen Western Bulldogs captain Griffen walks out on the club, officially requesting a trade to GWS. The Bulldogs in crisis as their leader says he wants out of the club. They have released a statement this afternoon slamming the skipper for his move. Joel Patfull Patfull is set to become a GWS player in exchange for pick 21. Expect this deal to get done this week. Patfull still has a year left to run on his contract, but has told the Lions a move to Sydney was his preference. Tim Membrey Membrey will almost certainly join the Saints this NAB Trade Period. Coach Alan Richardson saying: "The Swans are keen to do the right thing by Tim. He's committed to us. It's incredibly likely."

AFL involved in Port Adelaide/Essendon Draft Rort
Whispering_Jack replied to deanox's topic in Melbourne Demons
No abuse necessary Ash (in fact you've taken an admirable approach to what Dank, Hird, Little etc have put you and your fellow supporters through). Given the circumstances which have to factor in that he is going to get a holiday at the behest of ASADA/AFL/WADA/CAS, Ryder is probably worth the trade Port Adelaide offered Essendon i.e. pick 17. The thing that's causing the annoyance is that the two clubs and the AFL have colluded together to enable the deal to go ahead and give Essendon a massive bonus in what can only be described as draft tampering. It would also set a poor precedent for other clubs to follow with further rorting in the future with the same or similar schemes which would, in the end, make the system totally unworkable. -
Bombers scandal: charged, <redacted> and <infracted>
Whispering_Jack replied to Jonesbag's topic in Melbourne Demons
There's a lot of white noise going on about this scandal but this part is the one that interests me:- Methinks there is going to be a lot of pressure applied on ASADA from on high to distance itself from the AFL sinkhole and treat any offenders who are guilty of breaches of the WADA Code with a proper measure of seriousness. That means at best a half a season (i.e. in season) for players who co-operate and the full two years for others. The NRL deal and ASADA's handling of the matters, the lack of co-operation from Essendon, the government interference and the AFL's role is not being ignored overseas. Our international sporting reputation is taking a dive and, although its not in their domain, I wonder what other sports bodies think of the latest rort over Ryder. I don't believe they will be impressed. US anti-doping boss Travis Tygart slams Australia's former government over supplements scandal -
Ho, hum ... we have entered day four of the official NAB Trade Period and sooner or later something's gotta give... Jeff Garlett and Levi Greenwood Melbourne and Carlton could come to terms as early as today on Garlett while the Greenwood to Collingwood deal also appears close to being finalised. Dayne Beams Beams could still remain a Collingwood player, with the Magpies and Lions unable to come to terms on a suitable trade. The Pies insist they want a young player from the Lions as part of the deal, while Brisbane says its unwilling to let anyone other than picks go. The Ryder rort There are reports that Port Adelaide and Essendon have investigated a plan that could see Ryder move to the Power as an unrestricted free agent. It would then mean the Bombers received compensation from the AFL for him leaving. A further exchange of picks would see an adequate deal get done for both clubs. WJ - the deal will only get done at the expense of the AFL's integrity. If it does, the game falls into disrepute in my view and the damage to the competition, trading, free agency etc will be substantial Allen Christensen Justin Leppitsch met with the former Cats midfielder who wants to go to the Lions in Melbourne yesterday. Sam Grimley The Hawthorn tall has asked the club to trade him even though he is contracted for next season.

AFL involved in Port Adelaide/Essendon Draft Rort
Whispering_Jack replied to deanox's topic in Melbourne Demons
I agree that the pick 3 for Frawley was way over the top in terms of his worth but only when you consider it in isolation. We applied for special assistance for the second year in a row. Last year, one of the reasons we were knocked back was because of pressure from most of the other AFL clubs on the AFL Commission relating to the fact that we had been fined in relation to the "tanking" enquiry. We applied again. There was further unrest from the clubs and we were knocked back despite our record of 10 wins in three seasons which I believe would have been sufficient had the applicant not been tainted with the tanking brush as we were. So, for the fourth or fifth time we were punished by the AFL over the tanking issue. We deserved the Frawley compo at 3 and even better. Along comes Essendon and without applying for special assistance, the AFL seems to be putting its imprimatur on a deal that, if nothing else, stinks of special assistance by stealth. It's nothing like the Dal Santo deal of last year because the proposal suggests that Port Adelaide gives Essendon its first round pick in addition to the compensation pick. That is what I call draft tampering and the AFL is being anything but transparent if it approves of such non-sense. The scheme demonstrates an alarming decline in the level of integrity we are seeing from the AFL. -
AFL involved in Port Adelaide/Essendon Draft Rort
Whispering_Jack replied to deanox's topic in Melbourne Demons
The AFL is run by an independent commission but it set a precedent last year of taking notice of the clubs who were upset about Melbourne's application for draft assistance because of the fact that we had recently been the subject of a tanking investigation. Now the AFL is colluding with a club that has been involved in at best poor governance over a drugs program that involved injecting its players with thousands of needles. The collusion involves assisting the Bombers (who lost draft picks as part of the sanctions against them) in a substantial way with regard to a "trade" deal that's nothing less than a phony scam. I can see clubs like Hawthorn and Collingwood up in arms over this.
