MHL can only supply 40 watts of charging - thinking this is probably not enough for most phones?

The adaptor takes care of needing MHL support on the TV by converting to HDMI output. The phone obviously needs it and as @Choke said most newer TVs have MHL support anyway. My 2014 Sony and 2016 Panasonic both have it. If the adaptor has a USB connector, plug it into a USB slot on the TV if it has one to charge the phone while connected to the TV so the battery doesn't run out.

What a great idea. All clubs should have that. Would also be good for country/interstate memberships - using all 5 to go with 4 mates.

I think that was my comment? The connection at the phone end is Micro USB. USB-C has MHL support - actually it does (just not the Sony Xperia XZ, which I have) - here's one at JB https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/accessories/moshi/moshi-usb-c-to-hdmi-adapter/961109/. I bought this one at Officeworks - https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/comsol-universal-mhl-cable-comhlun015 I plugged the adaptor into my old Samsung Galaxy Note 3 on Friday night and it worked fine for the Hawthorn/Geelong game.
