  1. IMHO if we were to trade up for Harley Reid, we would be more willing to let both JJ and Harmes go. I'm not saying Harley would be a walk up start in the 22, but he would very quickly get ahead of those blokes. Losing JJ, Harmes, and Grundy could help us facilitate a few pick swaps to move up the board.

I'm curious to know why it took 2 hours of deliberation to come to a conclusion that 99% of people took about 2 minutes to get to.

I imagine it had to do with the Appeals Board reviewing the rulebook in its entirety to see if there was a rule anywhere that could override rule 18.5 for the Tribunal to have come to the outcome it did. Once it was determined that there wasn't, the finding was clear. Unlike us, Lawyers, Barristers and Judges understand the importance of reading all the Terms and Conditions because sometimes there can be a condition that overrides another.

Longer this goes without a comment from the club the less confident of them appealing I am.

I doubt we wouldn't appeal after what Goodwin said this morning. He would have been told what to say when the question was asked and he was adamant that Jacob would be playing this weekend and he wasn't considering any other option.

  4. I was surprised at the people having a go at Anderson last night after the failed appeal. I found his argument to be on point and showed that the contest was within the rules of the game. It was Gleeson who managed to somehow pull an argument "out of somewhere not so bright" to get the outcome we got. This is why everyone in the community is so flabbergasted by the result.

  5. "However we also find that a reasonable player would have foreseen that in spoiling the way he did, it would have almost inevitably resulted in a forceful blow to Ballard's head."

With Gleeson stating that they deemed the spoil a "football action" and to then follow up with the above statement could open a can of worms for the AFL. It won't happen tomorrow, but with this statement, the Tribunal have basically said that any football action that results in a hit to the head must be cited. That means that if you go for a speccy and knee a player in the head, you'll be liable. If you attempt to tackle you must foresee that your attempt may hit the player in the head when they drop their knees. Any football action can now be a reportable offence under this finding.

I can't see how we don't appeal on that alone.

Just mentions us having Freo's first and second round pick. Nothing new or exciting.

fwiw this these are the compensation categories.

    Free Agency Compensation pick categories:

    •  1st round
    •  end of 1st round
    •  2nd round
    •  end of 2nd round
    •  3rd round

In applying the formula, an expert committee reviews the formula outcomes. The committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes to GM – Football Operations where the formula produces a materially anomalous result.

The word 'expert' made me laugh!

Expert 1: "Did we get the desired result?"
Expert 2: "No, the formula is coming up with a second round pick."
Expert 1: "Than Scrap It! We cannot have them only receiving a second round pick! We'll give them a first round pick as promised!"
Expert 1 Walks Up to GM - Football Operations: "As discussed yesterday, the formula has come up with the outcome of a first round pick."
GM - Football Operations: "Excellent! Please Proceed."

  8. If it is true that he might stay, it would be purely on the basis that Freo don't have the necessary trade capital to meet our requirements (yet). If Jackson is adamant that he doesn't want to go to West Coast, than he may have discussed staying with us with both clubs and his manager to give Freo enough time to get the necessary capital for a trade in the future.

That said, I still think he'll be traded this year and have resigned to the fact. I'm also looking forward to seeing what we receive in return as it may prolong our time at the top of the AFL.

  9. I doubt Christian Petracca, who has significant media training, would openly joke about LJ's contract on TV with him there if he didn't believe he was going to sign. I still believe he will sign, but there's a lot of negotiating still to be done.

  10. I'm not surprised that they haven't appealed. The AFL have set up the MRO and Tribunal to be Outcome Based, not Intent Based. This was always bound to happen when the player that was hit didn't receive any "immediate" and evident damage. I say immediate because even though he wasn't concussed, the effect of minor knocks can build up under the surface.

The AFL needs to completely overhaul the MRO and Tribunal to reduce the Outcome Based Factor and Increase the Intent Based Factor. After Rioli knew he would be second to the ball, he showed no intent to protect the oncoming player. Instead he only cared about his own safety. Rowell be damned!

  11. The funny thing about those that are defending Rioli is that they will be the same people screaming "Why didn't the AFL do something!" in about 10 years when all the lawsuits make the AFL bankrupt. It's coming, and cases like this will only make it harder for the AFL to defend itself.

Cerra wants out of Fremantle, could we get a deal done?

I'm reliably told by those in the know that we can't get the deal done. While he was considering us, Carlton are now in the box seat as they are the only one that can get it done with their pick 6.
