The real question is ... is Goodwin too empathetic? Did he strip paint off the walls and eviscerate a few egos in response to multiple players costing us the game in the forward 50? If not then we’ve got a real problem. I do worry and have worried from the start that our coach is too nice and buddy-buddy with the players. When things are on the up things are fine. But you need to keep a certain distance and be willing to burst bubbles. Not convinced he has yet shown the capacity to deliver this hard edge in his coaching.

I love the club. I want it to improve. Analysing, scrutinising and discussing someone’s job performance does not equal ‘bashing’. Stop being lazy, take the cheer squad goggles off and refute an argument with logic if you disagree with it.
-
Yes he did. Agree you could go delve into a study much more deeply but prima facie there's a pretty strong case he hasn't hit enough targets over a six year period. We field at least 4 NQR types even when we field our strongest side, up to 10 when we are injury depleted. He hasn't recruited well beyond R1.

Is his record post-first-round up to scratch? I would argue that a significant reason why the list lacks depth is that Taylor has a poor strike rate beyond round one of the draft. We laud him for the Oliver recruitment, Brayshaw, Salem and so on and rightly so, but your top scout is paid to find a quotient of diamonds in the rough as well. Nowhere near good enough in this area for mine. You be the judge ... 2013 - Kennedy-Harris, Clisby, Hunt, Harmes, Georgiou 2014 - Neal-Bullen, Stretch, O.Macdonald, Vandenberg, M.White 2015 - M.King, Hulett, Wagner, Michie, J.Smith 2016 - Hannan, Johnstone, Filipovic, T.Smith, Keilty 2017 - Spargo, Fritsch, Petty, Baker 2018 - Sparrow, Jordon, Neitschke, Hore, Bedford, Chandler

Two opposing forces engaging in combat. Close your eyes and really think DD. The metaphorical link will eventually crystallise and make sense.

19 of the past 29 premierships have been won by coaches who previously won premierships as players. 66%. Satyricon gave 2 examples, I countered with 12 Add David Parkin to the list.

Sheedy, Malthouse, Matthews, Blight, Worsfold, Thompson, C.Scott, Longmire, Hardwick Simpson. Hell chuck in R.D.Barassi while we’re at it. Cheers.

Really impressive skill set. Seems to have what a lot of quick players lack, a sidestep and a change of pace. Could be a beauty.

Metaphors can have a link to anything if you use them appropriately enough. That's why they're metaphors. Also, it's sentence with three e's.

A 'battle' is not exclusively defined as pertaining only to military conflict.

I don't know that good bloke factor is what a club needs sometimes (not that Mitchell isn't). But he does bring is a winning mindset, a winning resume and highline footballing IQ. He's also a natural leader. Some might not like him but everyone would respect him. Big difference when a guy like Mitchell eyeballs you with directions, someone who's fought in the trenches and been to the Summit of football four times.
-
I’d be going for Sam Mitchell. Next big thing in AFL coaching.

They've lost 39 of past 43 games which should balloon to about 48 from 55 by the end of this season. That alone should have them in the conversation for a discretionary PP. The drafting stuff up just hammers it home. Clubs stuff up trades and picks. It's part of the reason the ones that do it a lot stay at the bottom of the ladder. Carlton are a reasonably big club with a restless supporter base and some heavy powerbrokers. Odds on here Gillon will step in and hand them pick 1.

If you're a forward then at some point you have to kick goals. Spargo has one in five appearances this year. Hit the scoreboard or hit the bricks.

WINNER?

He’s a good assistant with a schoolteaching background. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t have fresh ideas - it just didn’t translate into the top job. He’s not a leader of men into battle. He’s a cuddler. A 2IC. Good cop to the bad cop.
-
They should call in Garry Lyon to handpick their next coach.
-
The nervous sweat beading off Weid’s hands.

I would prefer a guy like Bolton to McArtney as Goodwin’s assistant. We need some fresh ideas and as others have said Bolton comes with Clarkson pedigree. He’ll be a great assistant once again for whoever nabs him.
-
Totally agree. League will manipulate it so they get PP first pick in draft to compensate for their trading stuff up last year. Watch the media get on board and start pushing for it. SOS should go with Bolton of course, has recruited poorly outside of their blue chip kids, but he’s a sacred Carlton cow and will stay. The GWS rejects recruiting policy was SOS’ baby and has been a disaster.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CHARLIE SPARGO
Matsuo Basho replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Poor draft selection. If you’re going to go for a small late in the second round, at least pick a kid with an eye for goal and a few tricks. Maybe an indigenous boy. Spargo has few special attributes. -
You do realize that tanking is pointless now that the automatic priority pick has been withdrawn. If you look at the history of picks 1 - 5 over the past ten years you will also see that it doesn't really matter if you finish eighteenth or thirteenth. Mostly they're all good players at the pointy end and it's just a raffle who turns out the best. Often pick 5 is better than pick 1 and so on. You get nothing now if you tank for the wooden spoon.

I haven't written him off yet. But I'm not overly impressed, either. What has he actually shown outside of the Geelong final and maybe one or two other games? I hope the club does the right thing and offers a fairly modest contract extension because he is nowhere near the $650/season value his manager touts him as. Try half that at best, for two years max. Don't be surprised if he is in opposition colours next season, either. Definite possibility. He has played 27 games.
