  1. Not optimistic but this fixture has been the least predictable in the AFL this past decade (2013 being the dishonourable exception). They are taking the opportunity to rest several players so that in itself may be a sign they are chalking this one up already. Break even in the midfield, who knows what will happen, we beat this mob with Col Garland as a forward no reason why we can't do this again.

  2. Surely Buckley's cooked. Got to be questions over Eddie too, their 2011 list could have continued to contend if it was kept together with Malthouse at the helm. Instead they retired players they didn't need to, got rid of others who tore it up elsewhere (Heath Shaw particularly), and dismantled the coaching panel. Probably cost them a flag with those calls. It's not a question of resources either because Buckleys wanted for nothing when it came to facilities and building his list.

More broadly the past couple of seasons I get a sense that there's a 'baton-passing' of sorts going on between them and us - prior to 2015 the only players we could prise out of them in trades were overpriced potatoes like Dawes, since then they've taken our discards/underperformed like Dunn and Howe (their BOG today) , all the while we pass them on the ladder and now have a three game streak on them. Notwithstanding frustrations at the past month we are well ahead of them and right now their list is in a bad state if Howe is their best defender and Moore their best forward.

  3. Self explanatory thread. Can all the comments about him being a first year coach etc- he's been at the club for two + years now, it's his list and gameplan, but we still fail to turn up for entire quarters, throw leads, and lack on field leadership, Questionable selection and positional calls have left us in the position where we've been forced to play Watts as our primary ruckman for whole halves of football, costing us a forward target. Most concerning of all is the feeling that this group have bought into the media driven spin that they're on the cusp of greatness. I hope they are but their performances to date haven't indicated that, and they have nothing to be arrogant about, certainly not enough to take any team in the competition lightly. That all comes from the head coach. Far from impressed with his performance to date.

Agree, all though I am nervous every game.

Every game is important although I don't think any game is necessarily season defining unless the result is way outside the normal range.

If we lose by a massive margin or win by a massive margin, then that can be season defining. Or if we just get over the line or choke at the end of the season when a place in the 8 is at stake.

Fair point, fwiw I actually think the reverse is true- if we fade out of quarters and lose by a narrow margin we have enough data to draw some conclusions for the rest of the season whereas a blowout could be written off as an anomaly

Why do we always have to play W.C. in Perth. Hard to beat, especially with the umpires no matter what head office says over there. Just when was the last time we played them at the "G" ? Surely next year they must play us here.

2014 and they did us by 93

The town was Swinford hence the Swinford curse and as Dubliner I was happy to see the curse rear it's head in last years All Ireland which ended in a draw with Mayo throwing away their best opportunity against the Dubs worst performance in 2 seasons. The Dubs won the replay to go back to back and make it 3 in 4 and 4 titles in 6 years

My family's from Galway, so the old man hates Mayo with a passion. I think he's started to feel some real pity for them though, even going so far as to barrack for them during the All Ireland last year. It'd be like MFC supporters cheering Collingwood in a GF because they had lost 8 in a row and they were starting to feel sorry for them

  7. Yeah been pretty down in the dumps too, but it could always be worse.

My folks are Irish so I have a keen interest in Gaelic football, and one of the strongest counties in the sport is the county of Mayo. They have been in more All-Ireland finals (equivalent to the grand final) since 1989 than any other county. They have, however, lost every single one. They are apparently subject to a curse, the Mayo Curse, laid on them when they last won an All-Ireland in 1951- the story goes that the winning team disturbed a funeral procession on their way home with the cup, whereupon the officiating cleric stood out on the road and cursed the county  to never win a title again until all members of that panel were dead. Three of them survive, for the record, and so too does the Curse. Tough and all as it has been for us, I always have the Mayo curse in mind when things go wrong, it could be worse!

Are we a better side though? Sandilands Fyfe, Neale, Mundy, Hill Brothers arr a pretty good core of players to start of with.

On paper I would say yes. Their main KPF are Kersten and that f*#%ing f*^#head McCarthy, I don't rate their defence much either and I think our midfield is more explosive than theirs.

How old are you? If you're any older than the age of 6, now seems an odd time to be fed up.

Smart Alec are we? I'm fed up because we have the talent on the list to win games like this, and indeed the 2nd quarter we played like it was a training drill and Freo were witches hats. To capitulate like that in the third and then play catch up, yes I think I'm entitled to be fed up at an insipid effort. We all knew Neelds list was garbage, when we got flogged it was to be expected. Today we were a better side than the Dockers they just took their chances and played more consistently, when we played well today we were far the better team. That's why I'm frustrated

Don't get carried away now Goffer.

Carried away? I'm fed up with the [censored] from the club, we have been rubbish for years and watching arrogance like they displayed today (they've no reason to be arrogant, they've achieved nothing yet) is galling. It really annoys me, talk about 'journey' etc when we can't put away middle of the road teams at home. Even worse will be the week of shite to put up with at work
