  1. I don't think the McLean interview was a "set-up." In fact, I believe Brock was a last minute substitute for a more illustrious(and interesting) Carlton player who found he was unable to attend, and notified the organisers late. The question that led to the "tanking "remarks was most likely a spur of the moment discussion.
  2. I was going to suggest Michael Reynolds, another " Quaker", after the first clue.
  3. I'll have a stab in the dark.........Terry Gleeson.
  4. What an incredibly brave player he was. I remember him standing his ground in " the hole" in defence as huge packs descended on him. He never shirked. His footy wasn't limited to taking spectacular marks.
  5. Does anyone know how much the MFC gets per annum from the "Age" in sponsorship money?

  7. I'm not sure how much planning would have been put into the questions McLean faced, since he was apparently a last minute replacement for some other Carlton player who was unable to attend. If only the original interviewee had been able to front up!
  8. Does anyone know how to get into the Carlton equivalent of "Demonland?" It would be interesting to see the posts before and after the Kreuzer Cup. After attending round 22, 2007, and facing derision from the Carlton fans after the final siren, I lost any qualms I'd previously held about "list management planning". I was hoping to hear some criticism of Carlton from the AFL after that, but it wasn't forthcoming . That made me think...once you reach the point where you can't make the finals,it's OK to plan your tactics to aim for the best possible draft picks. There is the advantage then of giving young players experience that they otherwise wouldn't get, and the opportunity to try players in new positions. Though there did appear to be a hint of lack of ethics in this, it had escaped scrutiny for several years before with other clubs. We were being naive by not doing it. I think our Club's administration must have felt the same way. In fact, AFL clubs are supposed to strive for excellence. Could it be argued that we weren't doing our best to improve if we DIDN'T maximise our chances of optimal drafting?
  9. It worried me that Mitch said he's nearly ready to start jogging on the "tready"". What a slow process is the recovery from a Lisfranc fracture! Let's hope that jogging doesn't aggravate it. We need him to be able to run normally soon, or he'll be handicapped by an interrupted pre-season.
  10. Chris was a Rhodes Scholar and was a more than handy amateur footballer.......he was in the Victorian Amateur team. By the way, it's good to see the Uni Blacks back up in A Grade.
  11. Any news on Cameron Pederson? The Age seemed to think he was likely to be ours a couple of days ago. I've heard nothing since.(?Footscray interested?)
  12. All very tall young players look unco and useless for a few years. eg P Salmon,J Madden, D Cox,J Stynes. But Gawn doesn't look so unco to me.
  13. It was Glenn McLean. I hated losing him at the time. Thought he was a future champ. He faded away. I wonder if he barracks for us or them now.....surely not the filth!!
  14. I'm amazed at the complete lack of coverage in our papers. I couldn't find any mention of the game in the Age or the H Sun.
  15. Why can't he play AFL next year? He turns 18 in February. He'll be nearly 20 by the end of his first AFL season. GWS and Gold Coast seem to play a lot of 18 year olds. I presume their birthdays must fall late in the year.
  16. Thanks for the info,Chelly. Very observant of you to note that.
  17. Does any one know of a website or phone app. that we could watch the game on? Is it on local radio? Incidentally, that 2nd semi score reminds me of that great Grand Final day in 1960 when we gained retribution against Collingwood!
  18. I hope fervently that our footy dept has looked seriously at whatever practice aids Sydney have used for goal kicking accuracy. I have no doubt it has been highly significant in their 2012 premiership........along with, of course, the "Bloods'" spirit!

  20. I can't help but think of Lynch as a big, clumsy fumbler, who's very unreliable in front of goal, despite his ability to kick long distances.
  21. Interesting stats in the Grand Final.......Hawthorn well ahead in most of the stats(ESP inside 50), but lost by 10 points. Inaccuracy by the Tassie Waverley Hawks was fatal. Meanwhile, I only remember one easy shot missed by Sydney(LRT). Interesting that Sydney placed so much emphasis on practising shooting for goal during the season. There's a vital lesson here, surely.
  22. " but for some bizarre reason I can still remember footage of Ron Barassi allegedly knocking out Roger Dean on the eve of the '63 finals resulting in a four match suspension. " --_________________________________________________________________ "Allegedly" is right! He hardly touched that little squirt Dean, who dived backwards. Dean would be reprimanded for that act nowadays. .That gutless act probably cost us the '63 premiership. Just as I'll never stop barracking for the Demons, I'll never stop disliking Richmond because of Dean, or Collingwood because of the '58 GF.
  23. As a one eyed Melbourne supporter, I know that I'm often illogically paranoid about Melbourne's treatment by the "men in green". On Sat night, I went to the game completely ambivalent about whether Freo or Geelong won. Every time there was a vague possibility of a free to Geelong, the completely partisan crowd would (naturally) pressure the umps. That pressure built, and time and time again, Geeelong would be the beneficiaries despite being beaten for the ball, and in most one on one contests. The free kick statistics were very one sided in the Cats' favour. The umpires MUST learn to close their minds to the noise from the crowd. By the way, how badly must Jordan Bannister officiate before he disqualifies himself from selection as a Finals umpire?
