3 things i fell out of love with this season...
titan_uranus replied to Jerry Lundergard's topic in Melbourne Demons
1. Bate and Martin not living up to my expectations. 2. Losing to West Coast. 3. Injuries to Petterd and Grimes. Again. -
We were over-rated, no doubt, but we had lots of injuries that year, and we had a multitude of close games. IIRC we had 4 or 5 games lost by one or two kicks. I remember one against the Bulldogs, where Cross and Boyd developed what is now known as 'sprawling' (falling forward in a tackle to milk a free). I threw the TV remote at the wall that afternoon.

Well I agree with him... Pretty harsh to knock a guy who's in hospital with fractured vertebrae, but I thought he was spiflicated by Harvey when he was tagging him, and I'm not convinced that he will end up being a good tagger.

3 things i fell in love with this season....

1. The off-field situation. We've gone from basket case to the club everyone's talking about. 2. The defence. We condeded less points than everyone in the bottom 8 except Adelaide, who are overly defensive at times, and we also condeded less points than Fremantle and Carlton, who are finalists. Frawley and Garland are stars already, Rivers had a much better year than I thought he would, we got good service from Bartram as a small defender, and we've got Warnock in the reserves for depth. 3. Unexpected talent: McKenzie, Bail and Gysberts. Didn't think much of any of these three at the start of the year, but the first two are best 22 players IMO and Gysberts is close. -
I reckon they'll go as follows: B&F - James Frawley Most Improved - Mark Jamar Best First Year Player - Tom Scully
-
Franklin's goal required him to run 40-50 metres, in the fourth quarter, then thread through a goal from the boundary on the run, all while being chased, and with the season in the balance. Dunn threw his boot at the ball and luck went his way. It's a bloody simple argument.

What is the future for Bate, Cheney & Mcnamara?
titan_uranus replied to Don24's topic in Melbourne Demons
If push comes to shove, I'd get rid of Bate before McNamara. Bate was, without a doubt, the biggest disappointment of 2010. Cheney is contracted, and thus is going nowhere. -
Watts, Petterd and Dunn occupy the half forward line. Wonaeamirri gets the forward pocket, Bartram the back pocket, MacDonald takes Grimes' spot on half back and Grimes plays midfield.
-
6 - Jurrah 5 - McDonald 4 - MacDonald 3 - Frawley 2 - Scully 1 - Green Bruce's last quarter was woeful and should exclude him from any votes. He contribued to 4 of North's 5 goals (outmarked, gave a free kick away, overcommitted to a marking contest, turned it over by hand).
-
You can't call it 'debate' and then call your opponent 'stupid'. You lose, E25, whether you were right or wrong about the initial topic, you lose.

Bate was rubbish yesterday. Gave us nothing. Couldn't tackle, wouldn't chase, didn't give us any sort of meaningful target, and has no idea what he's doing when we don't have the ball. Nowhere near our best 22, and probably didn't deserve a game yesterday. Morton's first half was good, his third quarter was OK, his fourth quarter was crap. I counted 4 fourth quarter instances of Morton either making a poor decision or being easily 'out-strengthed', for want of a better word. Not one of our best players IMO, but certainly not our worst (that honour goes to Newton, with Bate an honourable second).

Franklin's is still goal of the year. Dunn's is better than Rioli's by virtue of the greater distance he was from goal.

Read this: 184, 169, 26, 22, 21, 13, 13, 10, 10, 10, 6, 6, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 2, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 The scores of all the dismissed batsmen in this test. It's really hard to work out exactly how Broad and Trott managed to make those scores, when in every other partnership the ball has dominated.
-
Let's turn it into a crowd estimate thread. 29,887.
-
Kozi is crap. But St Kilda don't think so and in no way would they consider trading him for Warnock.

Mark Stevens wrote an article about it a few weeks ago now and he made a good point. He said that maybe it is invariable that some players simply need to run on that curved line to give themselves the best chance of kicking the goal. So what the rule should be is that the deviation needs to make your line no better off. So if you're a leftie like Franklin, and you've marked the ball on the right side for a leftie, then you would have to start your 'deviation' from a position that is already off the line, so that, as you run in and to the left, you end up on the line of the mark. If you marked it on the other side, then you would have to start your 'deviation' from the line of the mark, making you worse off. That way no player can improve the angle without being called to play on. But tbh, if Dunn's kicking goals for us by flaunting the rules, I don't particularly want to see them changed.
-
Lose. Lol, jk. It's 2010, not 2009. Win. I wanna smash those arrogant Roos and show them who the real young-up-and-coming-next-superstar team is. They're so deluded.
-
Yes, like Lynden Dunn. If you want to see Franklin stopped then Dunn's proficiency in front of goal might disappear too.

Fremantle... good call or an utter disgrace?

Fremantle... good call or an utter disgrace?
titan_uranus replied to Jaded No More's topic in Melbourne Demons
Geelong had three late withdrawals today, Enright, Byrnes and Selwood. Milne was a late withdrawal from St Kilda, and Johnson was a late withdrawal from Collingwood. All those of you who complained about Fremantle want to have a go at those teams too? It might be of a lesser degree but they're doing the exact same thing: resting players with a view to the finals. -
Yeah, Carlton's going to give up their promising young forward, their only one, for a defender they don't really need.

Another fine example of how stats can be meaningless. I never said PJ was competant. In fact, he's not. So to say Newton's a better player because his stats are bigger is flawed. Also, those stats say nothing about intensity, effectiveness, or aggression. Which are usually lacking in any game from Newton. Why play Newton then?
-
People keep saying this, but when do we ever see it? Sure, maybe his form at VFL suggests he can outdo PJ, and I'm not saying PJ's a much better player, but the argument that Newton does a lot more around the ground is just wrong based on what he produces at AFL level, which is close to nothing.

Just a few whispers I've heard regarding the 2011 fixture: -We're a fair chance to be interstate in Round 1. We haven't been interstate in Round 1 since the 90s some time, not sure exactly when the last time was but I know for a fact that from 2000-2010 we've been in Melbourne. -We're also a fair chance to get a Friday night game against Collingwood early on in the year (like Round 2 or 3 or so) -We'll be on more Friday nights and more TV in general
