  1. Of all the over the top melt downs on here tonight, I have no idea why Weideman is in the firing line. Great game from a young key forward. Crashed packs, took a few grabs, showed some aggression. What's he played? 10-15 games? sheesh. He'll kick a bag if we stick with him this year. Some seem to make a decision on players and then ignore what they see in front of their eyes. Gutted with the loss. But the pressure we applied with some improved skills and efficiency inside 50 will be good enough to take care of most teams in the comp. The blowout was completely understandable for me. It wasn't that we couldn't keep up anymore, it was how much effort we'd put into getting back into the game for no reward. It's completely demoralising. My brain was ready to melt and I was exerting no physical energy. A few cleaner chains of possessions, Hogan kicks that goal and we're in front midway through the last. That makes all the difference to the mindset of our players when it comes to the effort at the end of the game. Our defence was very good. Oscar, Lever, Hibberd, Jetta finally clicked and you can see what the plan is here. More of this please. It's also worth noting that Richmond are very, very good. In particular their finishing around goal. They have about 5 players who barely touch the ball except for when they get a crumb in the forward 50. One step and they goal. So clean. They make half chances into goals. So many of their goals were from contests that we did well to even up only for a wet and slippery ball to somehow pop out to their advantage. The score at the end flattered them. The game was closer than that. In terms of the closeness of the game, it felt like a 20 point loss. Which I think is about right. The game plan has merit and issues. We dominate the ground balls so we play chaos footy. When the ball is on the deck we look intense and control the game. It's a strength of ours so we're wise to play this way. But the result is that our disposals are constantly rushed and we're completely stuffed by the end. We just need to grab say 20% of North Melbourne's game plan where they move the ball with a bit more control and take their time. There were moments in the game where we tried to do this, but Richmond just doesn't allow uncontested marks and we fumbled too much to execute it. The backline finally worked, but Richmond shut down our ball movement. The game plan will be OK I think. Our biggest issue is our players. We have some seriously out of form players who are failing to execute the game plan, or even footy fundamentals. We don't have obvious replacements for them in the twos either. Our small forwards were horrible. Players we expected to step up have gone backwards. ANB, Harmes, Jeff, Hunt, Stretch, Tyson, Vince, Wagner are all not performing to the level we expect. Positives are Hogan, Clarry, Gawn, Hibberd (huge tonight), Lever, Omac, Salem, Brayshaw, Petracca. I think Salem, who has only played maybe 8 games as a mid, is really growing into the role. Add in Viney & Tmac. Maybe Balic comes in for one of Harmes and ANB. Play a few games in dry conditions. We have winnable games the next 4 rounds. Let's see where we are then. I think a few wins and a bit of confidence will make a difference. 2018 is not going as well as we'd hoped, but it's not as bad as it feels yet.
  2. Brisbane are better than people give them credit for. They’ll be in the 8-12 range this year. We played well, then weathered their attack and ran away with it in the end. It’s only a matter of time until it all clicks for us this year, and when it does, it will be glorious. We’ll kill some opposition coaches this year for sure.
  3. Hogan, weid, watts, garlett, petracca, Stringer. not saying we will or should get him, but there's worse things in the world than that forward line. Would back Bmac to know if it's wise to chase him, and get him focused if we do.
  4. Haha. I'm still rageful from his kickout against Collingwood...
  5. would anyone trade Tmac to get Stringer? Maybe not a straight swap... But I wouldn't be too worried to lose Tmac.
  6. To get young talent like Lever you have to pay overs. We'll get rinsed but he's probably worth it.
  7. Seems a good team to me. Dying to see Frost down back, seems a natural defender. In for Col. Trenners for Viney. Kennedy has been average since round 4. ANB doesn't add much. VDB is a gun I'm happy to rush him back in. Big body against the hawks makes sense. Oscar Mc... Needs time at the level before we make a call I think. We're gonna have a crack this weekend I think.
  8. Anyone else see Calyton Oliver burst through the pack at top speed? ohhh yea.
  9. If we do get Bennell. We should get him cheap... which leaves us able to do other fun things this trade period. Imagine if we got Bennell and another experienced, good mid. pffftt, now I'm dreaming.
  10. Sometimes he tries to do too much. He was like that last year too but he had 30 possies most games so it wasn't so bad. Just noticed it more this year I think. He's amazing when he's just being an extractor. Quick hands to a runner in traffic. I'd like to see him develop that game as his focus. Take the first option. He'll be right though, clearly seemed injured for most of the year.
  11. All i could think watching the game on the weekend was that he looks like our Luke Parker. Tough explosive mid with great hands. More Harmes please.
  12. Harley Bennell. Exactly what we need. If we were able to chase someone else with a bit of pace like Billy Hartung that would be rad too.
  13. HB is the kind of player that makes me angry that we don't have one of. If that makes sense. One of those classy, speedy game winners that just make me want to take most of our list out the back and put them out of my misery. Get. Him.
  14. I don't see the point of trading Toumpas now. He's worth nothing on the trade table. There's a chance, albeit a slim one, that he could start showing some consistent form next year. He's showed signs so far I guess but not much more than that. Might as well keep him for next year and delist after that if he doesn't make the best 22.
  15. I can't believe they didn't name some of our quick, talented midfielders! oh wait....
  16. they talk about teams that just know how to win. We just know how to lose. We had 70% of the game play on our terms and still worked out a way to lose.
  17. Hoping he runs with westhoff this week. Will be interesting!
  18. Loved that game from Toumpas. For me the only mistake that gets to me is the shot he had on goal while on the boundary when there options in board. Got a bit carried away there. But he was hard and classy today. Used it well. Hope he stays in the team all year and really works into some consistent footy.
  19. how are we this bad? where is our young but promising or even emerging midfield? oh to be a bulldogs or saints supporter right now.
  20. If Watts got dropped last year I'd have said his career would be hanging by a thread and he'd most likely be traded. This feels different. He just needs to get some form and he'll be back in. I like Watts when he's in form so I hope he works back in. With the young talent we have now I feel we're less reliant on Watts turning into some mega star that he clearly wont be. Fingers crossed we don't get smashed this week. Would love Jeffy to kick 4+ as I feel he could have nearly done this in every game this year if he kicked straight.
  21. he'll fix his kicking action. I just want him to be able to nail goals from 50m. Not sure he can kick that far. had a shot from 45 a while ago and sprayed it bad. Early days so no big deal but geez it would be nice to see him smash one from outside 50m. love this kid.
  22. Thought McDonald was immense. Whole team was rubbish in second half, hard to know whether our problems there can be fixed with a swap/cull of players. I'd keep vanders. Be good to have the Toump and JKH in the side. Maybe Gawn in and Frost out too... tricky one. Was at the game. Got that depressed feeling I'm so used to but decided to move on quickly. Showed real promise for 6 out of 8 quarters this year so far. Enough to go on with.
  23. His game against the dogs was really good. Not so good against the bombers. I'm not phased, he's hardly played 20 games. Given time I hope for more of the good games. Not worth slitting our wrists over just yet I wouldn't have thought.
  24. meh. it's a pre-season game. You take the positives as a sign of good things to come and completely ignore the negatives as irrelevant to 'real' footy. What i liked was Toumpas. He turns his possessions into genuine chances of scoring. More time with Roosy in his ear and he'll start to cut out the clangers and nail the more risky kicks. He's a playmaker pure and simple. Long term we're gong to love seeing the ball in his hands and hopefully with a bit more confidence we'll see him breaking out of the middle. Salem was nice too. Easy possessions and he was playing it safer with his disposal than Toump, but it's good to see him look so comfortable across half back. Again, get the ball in his hands that often in the season proper and it wont be long until he starts slicing teams up. Pretty happy with what I saw.
  25. The thing about training reports is that they are so clearly someone's opinion. If someone writes something about how your most hated player is training well I'd advise you to react the same way as when someone likes a film you don't. Just accept it or maybe politely disagree and offer your take. Simple as. Love the work TDI. In the offseason I just like to read anything about what's going on. Your reports (and those of others) are the best anything going on round here.
