I used to work with coburg until this year. Watched every one of their games from the bench for 3 years. Thought a lot of their young kids were pretty ordinary. Thought they were on a road to nowhere. Some of them looked very soft and very lazy to me. One of those was a boy who played very nicely yesterday on Buddy Franklin. Highly rated tall as a youngster... has taken him a while to develop. Looks a much better player in a winning team... as do most of them come to think of it... Hmmmm....

I'd keep faith in Sylvia. Has been steadily improving the past couple of years and he's just coming back from a spinal fracture. It may only have been a transverse process, but trust me he'd still be sore and he would have had a few weeks off training altogether. Will come good. Should perhaps have had a game a Casey before playing his 1st game, but now that he's had a full game and a bit under his belt I have confidence we'll see something from him in the next few weeks.

Not that i know the specifics of Gysberts injury, but the comments about "hopefully closer to two weeks" are a load of rubbish if he has a "similar injury to Jetta but not as bad". 6 weeks plus I think is more around the mark for that type of injury if it is indeed mild and treated conservatively.

Mum and sister on board as new members on the back of big Jim's passing. It has certainly rallied some of the sleepers.

Not a bad injury list to start the year with. Not many key players on it. Disappointing for the development of some of the young kids obviously, but injuries occur at a footy club and whilst a few more fancied players have had interrupted pre-seasons (Grimes, Morton, Tapscott, Sylvia, McKenzie etc), we're not as badly placed as we could have been.
-
Did anyone there notice if Grimes was in a sling/did he look to be carrying a sore shoulder or was he moving it around freely?

Most people are pretty spot on with their comments re FAI. The only thing I'd add is that there is still no evidence that the surgery prevents osteoarthritis developing in the hips as the long term data is just not yet available. There is only recent evidence that people with FAI actually have an increased risk of developing arthritis. It's a fertile area for research in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine at the moment. I am involved at both levels, having had the operation myself prior to working in sports medicine. If anyone is interested I can elaborate on this topic at some point, but others have explained it pretty well.

Casey player faces 2 year ban for drug purchase.

A doctor was appointed quite a while ago as well as his assistant. I know them well. They will do a good job. They don't have the experience yet of Drs. Daff and Freid, but they are young and enthusiastic. One of them is from Sydney and will likely only be here for the one year. The head doctor was North Melbourne's doctor last year. -

I was a vfl club doctor for 3 years. Every year Asada and the vfl required me to give a detailed drug education talk during the Pre season. A detailed ppt presentation was provided, produced by the afl and Asada. He was careless, it may not have been intentional, but he is still guilty according to the wada anti doping code... Which the afl does not follow in its entirety. Will be interesting to see what happens. -
Has anyone got our win-loss record? From memory we may have lost one game, but I don't recall playing that day, so can't confirm that. Rollo? Any official stats?

He's still way too skinny to be an influential midfielder going by that photo. And as far as being captain, that may be an issue. How can your captain be a skinny little 3rd year runt player with about 30 games experience? Based on stamina/running ability alone? I'm not talking out of sour grapes and I don't think I've ever posted anything or even bothered reading many Scully threads. But I find it remarkable from a purely logical point of view that he would even be considered for captain. I know this is only media spin, but c'mon. Power would be a much better choice for a season until someone like Scully proves he can actually play the game and play it consistently.

Max gawn was just going in to repair a meniscal tear and came out with an ACL reconstruction. I think we should panic!!!! -
The Tigers SEVERELY lack depth. And their entire season is reliant on the fitness of 3 players, Deledio, Cotchin and Reiwoldt. They have very little else. I know and have watched on a weekly basis for 3 years all of their young kids and fringe players (bar this yea's crop of draftees) and I am not impressed. In fact, that's an understatement. They are an injury or 2 to the above players away from weekly embarrassment. Edit: Would actually like to be proven wrong as I like these boys as people. Just not sure how the hell they ended up with such a strangely deficient list with so much opportunity to rebuild. 2nd edit: Forgot Dustin Martin, he's not bad either.

Obviously this is just a snapshot of Collingwood training compared with ours, but I think it highlights a difficulty we will have throughout this year. Certainly against the better sides, and possibly early on in the year against the mid-lower sides. I'll use StKilda under Ross Lyon as an example. I remember very clearly that Lyon's first year in charge of the Saints started off very slowly. I can't remember where they finished, but I'm fairly sure they took a step backwards after some decent years leading up to his appointment. His game plan took a while to catch on with the playing group. That was with a team that was already performing at a good level. Our team has been pathetic for years. We have no out and out stars. We have a new coach and a number of kids still learning the game who have to learn a completely new game plan. We may be doing everything right on the track and be heading in the right direction, but my concern is that come round 10, we could be going alright but still be 2-8 just based on the fact that we haven't perfected our new gameplan. Collingwood are now just a classy unit who have been well trained and matured together. Their training (albeit one session noted by one supporter) can easily be dedicated to refining an already proven formula. We, on the other hand, are still teaching new tricks to VERY raw little boys in an AFL sense. We're a long way behind the best teams still. To suggest we are finals contenders in our first year with a new coach after being perennial underperformers is, I think, a bit optimistic, Don't get me wrong, I would love to see it, I'm just not getting my hopes up. -
So hypothetically, if he's good enough, when would Billy be eligible for a father son selection?

Not really impressed by Carlton's facilities. Have seen them quite a few times. Not bad, but nothing like what we are reported to have at AAMI (disclaimer - have only seen Carlton's but not AAMI... I am only able to comment on the fact that their facilities are not brilliant, just good and certainly much better than what we used to have at Junction oval). -
Never tried this, but I'll have a crack: FB: Garland Frawley Grimes HB: Tapscott Rivers Morton C: Bail Moloney Gysberts HF: Davey Watts Blease FF: Green Clark Howe R: Jamar Jones Trengove I/C: McKenzie Martin Petterd (sub: Bennell) Sylvia to come in rd 2 obviously - drop whoever doesn't perform rd 1. Love Bartram's endeavour, but if you can't kick in today's football, you cost your team dearly. I can remember too clearly the West Coast game at Etihad when he fluffed 2 gimme goals whilst we were making a comeback. Killed any chance we had and shattered the morale of the team. He lost me that day. I am hopeful Fitzpatrick will make a play for a spot in the 22 at some stage this year, but not brave enough to slot him in for round 1. Jurrah doesn't get a game in my round 1 team because he is too far behind the rest of the group in terms of training and fitness and despite his undoubted ability, I think it would be good for him to fight for a spot in the team and develop the hunger to be an AFL superstar. McDonald unfortunately has poor disposal and decision making and I can't fit him in for round 1 despite my great admiration for the way he goes about his football. Nicholson is close and I expect he will be first cab off the rank for promotion from the rookie list, but still can't fit him in ahead of those named. Jetta is underdone after major off-season shoulder surgery. Would love him in the team... don't know at whose expense. Sellar is an unknown to me and I can't name him based on what I don't know. Strauss is not expected to play for some time still. Green is still a star and deserves a spot in the team for round 1. As for his captaincy... I think he played better footy without it.

Grimes... was incredible before his injury. People forget quickly. Watts - a gun and will be a star of the comp. Morton - don't know why, just have a feeling. He has a lot to prove and I think he has something ... a hunch. -

2 or 3 years ago Bate was a shining light in an otherwise mediocre team. Some considered him close to top 50 in the league. He has talent. But he is in no mans land in that he's not a true midfielder and not a true KPP forward. He has excellent disposal I50 and regularly hits targets. I feel he could be an excellent HFF. I have doubts about his ability to be a very effective midfielder, but would love to be proven wrong. Aso, I know we have a severe lack of class in the midfield compared with the best teams, but in 2000, I really don't think we were much different. We had a solid but workmanlike midfield. We will only be a REAL premiership contender when we get this class in the mix and firing 100% (I'm thinking Trengove, Sylvia at his best, Jones to step up as well and become elite (similar to Dane Swan in my opinion) and Viney to add the finishing touch). Add Grimes with a couple more years development,Morton with a few added kg's and perhaps Tappy and McKenzie rotating through and we could become a class midfield. Even Bail and Jetta add another dimension. Time will tell, but in the meantime, there's no reason we can't significantly improve and make finals this year with the stocks we currently have. -

Fast twitch and slow twitch fiber muscle fiber proportions don't tell the entire story. The VO2max is THE determiner of endurance (which, is affected significantly by fiber type I agree, but also by other factors - eg. efficiency of running technique). There's plenty of literature on the subject available on the internet I'm sure. I don't have the time to elaborate. But just to clarify, I'm not trying to dispute anything that others have said. All good info. Just that VO2max needs to be considered in the discussion and that this is influenced by more than just fiber type. And though a person's VO2 max is significantly determined by genetics, ultimately, the ability to achieve the individual's highest potential VO2 max depends on their training. Now I'm happy to leave that to others to discuss... I'm in a tropical paradise trying to destroy my own VO2max with alcohol and 2nd hand smoke in night time bars -

Not the worst thing to get. The meniscus is like a shock absorber between the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (main bone of the lower leg which, with the femur, forms the knee joint. The treatment will involve arthroscopy (camera into the joint) and cutting out the damaged part of the meniscus. He will be back into pretty much full training in 4-6 weeks. -
Yep. I'e studied this in a fair bit of detail. My opinion is that it is a massive waste of time to do 2 weeks there. Moreover, the way most teams are doing it (at the start of the pre-season), there is no way the physiological benefits can last throughout the season, even with the benefit of an altitude room. In fact, I think the room is even more pointless than the training camp. In essence, the aim (as someone has already mentioned) is to sleep high and train low. This allows for training at maximal capacity whilst gaining the physiological benefits of living at altitude. You definitely get some adaptive changes within the 2 weeks, but not the full benefit and certainly not a sustainable long-term benefit without continued and consistent long-term exposure to altitude. The only benefit I see is potentially a greater capacity to train in the immediate post-camp period, which could then be used to build a better base for later training (ie. accelerate the building of fitness levels during the pre-season). I feel the altitude training rooms are rubbish because unless you spend massive chunks of your day in them, you are unlikely to get any benefit whatsoever from a short exercise session during which you are unable to work at your peak performance (ie. you can't train as hard in the damn room and you're not in there long enough for it to make any difference). Some people have tried to overcome this issue by building altitude houses or tents that simulate sleeping at altitude. This is more like the altitude camp scenario with the aim of getting longer periods of exposure to lower barometric pressures. But try getting a whole team of AFL players to live like that... and regardless, the jury is still out on the altitude house/tent method. Hope that helps. My vote is a definite NO!!! I think that the main benefit of these camps is either psychological or comes from team bonding experiences and a feeling of 'eliteness' in that environment.

Well done Martin Flanagan on another great piece. It would still take a miracle for Jim to make it to another Christmas next year, but by God he's an amazing fighter!!! I personally wouldn't count it out. I will freely admit that I didn't think he'd survive for this long with such an aggressive disease in his body; he continues to prove all the doubters wrong.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JACK VINEY
pringle replied to einstein251's topic in Melbourne Demons
To those saying he's just playing against boys, anyone think of the fact that he was bottom aged and playing against the best of the best in the U18 carnival? Really we should be talking about how this young bottom aged kid was able to monster older opponents... -
I am going to go out on a limb and say that Willy Wheeler is a dead set chance to be rookied by Richmond ... however (my disclaimer) ... he is quite short, about 170cm I think. Unfortunately (in my opinion) gone are the days when football ability was football ability regardless of how tall or short you were. Willy is a GUN!!! Full stop. I watched every game he played this year. I am not a relative or friend of his. Trust me. I just worked for Coburg FC and he is an absolute star footballer, BUT... he is 170cm at best. That is a BIG factor in recruiting and no doubt the only reason he wasn't drafted. But at VFL level he is a brilliant little player and so composed and skilled. I REALLY hope he gets rookied, as I have rarely seen a talent like him as an 18y.o. small boy playing VFL 1's. I hate the fact that height is an issue these days when looking at drafting talented young, players, but unfortunately it is... and yet useless 188+ athletic midfielders with relatively little football ability get snapped up and talked up as the next big thing due to their amazing athletic ability. Anyone remember Diesel Williams? Tony Liberatore? Would hate to think that there is no place for this type of player in modern football.
