Im not so sure we really have to try to pull this thing off. Look at it this way. In the next 5 rounds I can't see us winning any games (at best maybe QB, but even that is highly unlikely). HAWTHORN - MCG ST KILDA - GC COLLINGWOOD - MCG ESSENDON - Etihad BRISBANE LIONS - Gabba Let's just say worst case scenarion we actually win one of these, we can then afford nly 2 more wins for the rest of the season. The draw for the rest of the season looks like this: WEST COAST EAGLES - MCG (chance) PORT ADELAIDE - MCG (chance but highly unlikely) GEELONG CATS - Skilled Stadium (pencil in a loss) SYDNEY SWANS - Manuka (as above) RICHMOND - MCG (chance but unlikely a 2nd time this year) NORTH MELBOURNE - Etihad (should have no trouble losing this one) FREMANTLE - MCG (chance, but "list management" period with plenty of players off for early operations) CARLTON - Etihad (No chance) ST KILDA - MCG (Won't beat the eventual GF runner-up) That's 4 games in which I think we have even a remote chance. Of course we won't winn all of those, and with our inexperience, we could at best hoope to win half the winnable ones. So that should still leave us with 4 wins at best without even having to try very hard to lose.

I may have missed a thread about this, but just wondering what (if anything) happened regarding Dunn's contact with the umpire on Saturday. And I have to say, if Dunn was suspended for this incident, his opponent deserves to go as well for the cynical tactics at the bounce that led to Dunn's umpire contact. What do you do as a tagger in that particular instance if your opponent puts you in such a risky position?

Regardless of whether he meant it or not, from close up, the most impressive thing for me was that as he picked up the ball, he had a few options in terms of which direction to run. Without any hesitation, he turned onto his left side. Not even a thought of "let's try to get onto the trusty right", just instinctively knew which way was best and didn't for a moment doubt his ability to dispose of the ball well on his left. And despite the floater, the kicking action on the left looked reasonably natural. We have a gem people. By no means ready for AFL footy judging on what I saw on Sunday, but will be a star.

Can you just edit things on wiki if or whenever you feel like it? If so, how could you ever use it as a reliable source for anything? I hope kids don't use it for school projects etc. Sounds ridiculous!

That's all I can get for free. Beggars can't be choosers. Don't tell the old man!

For those thinking of staying home to watch, I urge you to reconsider. Coburg always have a very sizeable contingent of loyal fans at home games. I know it's not like a big afl crowd, but when our boys get on a run it can be difficult to stop with the fans behind them. Add the cousins contingent to the equation and you will find a very intimidating atmosphere come tomorrow arvo. Anyone who can make the trip down to support the boys would be doing them a great service. You can always tape the game and watch it again later. As added incentive, they have great BBQ hot dogs and really good ham and salad rolls plus decent coffee if the weather is cold. And how could you miss the messiah's first outing? Plus it's always nice to get the suburban footy feel (which Coburg city oval has in spades) and also get up close to the players and listen to the coaches at the breaks.

That is correct. He should be fine as long as there are no complications from the surgery and the bone unites in the correct manner. We all should be thankful that it's only the fibula. And considering he wasn't going to play senior footy this year anyhow, let's look on the bright side and say that it's lucky it happened now and not later in his career.

How many goals would Newton kick in a season if he played for Geelong?
pringle replied to pringle's topic in Melbourne Demons
That's a good reply total. By all means bag the crap out of him if you want, but at least you answered the question. -
I like these crowd-guessing threads. I used to be obsessed with guessing the crowd when I was younger. Last week I did poorly, but got very close in round 1. I will guess 23,156.

How many goals would Newton kick in a season if he played for Geelong?
pringle replied to pringle's topic in Melbourne Demons
Well put bob. That's what I've been trying to say. Clearly some people here hate newton and care little for his abiliy. But all I asked was how many goals he would kick if he got a game. Must have hit a very raw nerve. I never said he was a champion, nor was I looking through "rose coloured glasses". I just have a feeling he'd be good for 2 goals a game in a better side plus the odd 3-5 goal bag IF he got a game each week. Whether he would get a game or not is a different question. Though I admit that this too is worthy of discussion here, but probably after at least having a go at answering the hypothetical question rather than dismissing it as a possibility. -

I don't think I'm 'bizzarely glorifying the ordinary'. I too am bitterly disappointed with his progress. Having said that, I also think some here underestimate the effect our club's poor performances can have on a forward like Newton. In Modern footy, forwards rarely take contested marks like the Plugger's, Dunstall's etc. With delivery from guys like Jones and Bruce, who at the moment couldn't hit the side of the Melbourne Exhibition center, I just feel he has been a bit short changed. I am NOT saying he is a star. Maybe too many people look at the entire club through rose coloured glasses and fail to accept that our mediocrity as a whole has held some players back... -

Great understanding of the topic guys. You don't have to agree that he would do better at Geelong. This is called a hypothetical. If he was in the team, how many would he kick? By all means say he's no good and would kick 7 goals in 22 games or something to that effect. I asked how many he would kick if he played a full season with Geelong. Surely there is someone here who is not so bitter about the fact that we are crap and have players that are not up to standard who make our forwards look worse. I don't think Lonergan is much better than Newton and he still managed to kick a few goals due to lovely delivery. There are many serviceable forwards at other clubs who are probably not as good as Newton, but they at least get a few more opportunities a game. How many would Newton kick if he had those same opprtunities? FWIW, I think he's an ok to average footballer who would be good for 40-60 goals over 22 games in a good side with a gun forward taking the opposition's no 1 defender. And with time and class around him he could improve on that. -
Having started his career with such promise, Newton has yet to kick on. However I believe that in a better team with good delivery into the forward 50, he would be a very handy forward who could potentially kick plenty of goals. I'm not trying to say that he's a 100 goal a year player, but I do think that being in a team with a poor midfield for the past few years has hindered his development. Interested to see what others think.

It's been so long since I even turned 3AW on to listen to footy I can't believe Rex Hunt is still there. If anyone can decipher the drivel that comes out of Rex Hunt's mouth, then they probably deserve to be locked away with him in a lunatic asylum. The man does not speak English as far as I can tell, and certainly does not actually 'commentate' a single minute of the game he is watching. Most of the time it is hard to tell whether they're actually even playing football when he's calling. You can hear a crowd... it sounds like there must be a game on... but the words just don't match up to the action. How they still have him around after so many years of the same tripe is beyond me. I have no particular bias against MMM. I can listen to them if I have to, but I agree that they do seem to rant on and get over-excited at times. KB gives me the irrits and should be sacked. If not for him SEN would be a pleasure to listen to. Did anyone hear during the Collingwood Adelaide game when a Pies player (I think Daisy Thomas) took a screamer that was disallowed for hands in the back because he used his hands (in a trivial manner) to fly. The Ox turned to KB and told him that his stupid rule had "taken the great mark out of the game". KB's irritatingly typical defence was, "no I haven't David, I've increased the number of great marks in the game". Enough said.

No as well from me.

Having been at the Casey game on Sunday, my potential in's on displayed form would be Dunn, Bail and Newton. Bail looks to have something about him and I would say he's ready to step up to AFL level. I really liked his game on Sunday. Very clean, read the play well and used the ball to good effect. He and Bennell should be rotated throughout the year between VFL and AFL. Dunn was a class above VFL level and should be playing. I can't understand why he would not be selected and expect him to play this week. Also very noticeable at VFL level that he has a big strong body. He should be tried up forward in my opinion. Started his career there and showed he can kick a goal. Nothing else is working... Newton was really impressive in a day that did not at all suit the big men. Whilst he may not have picked up a heap of possessions, he chased, put in 2nd and 3rd affeorts and attacked the ball hard. Showed that he wants to play AFL footy. I noticed someone wrote the opposite about his game somewhere in another thread. Load of crap whoever wrote that. He busted his gut on the weekend and anyone who says otherwise is just a Newton basher who went out to Casey hoping to prove the stereotype correct. If Dunn doesn't play forward, I would try Newton. As for the others, after watching Robbo on Sunday, I WISH he was ready. On individual efforts and moments of brilliance like his 2 speccies, I would say bring him on... unfortunately, he should probably play a full game at Casy before promotion. Plus it's a long season, so no need to risk him. But judging by his performance on Sunday, he has lost none of his spring and zip and should be back to his normal speccy-taking self very soon. Maric is the other one people are advocating, and whilst he was ok on the weekend, his form did not particularly warrant selection. I am a big wrap for the boy and believe he is a class act, but needs to at least earn his spot in the team with a solid 4 qtr performance. Also, interrupted pre-season, so fitness not up to scratch as yet. Liam Jurrah is not even close to AFL standard as yet. Looks exciting, glides around the ground like a panther and you can tell he has the ability to do some freakish things in terms of ball-handling, but he lacks the basics, such as attack on the footy, basic kicking skills, and general footy nous. His decision-making and kicking in particular were atrocious on Sunday. This will take a long time to develop. If he gets a game this year it will be purely to give him a taste. I would expect mid-late 2010 at best until he is really capable of mixing it with the best. I hope sooner, but wouldn't expect too much based on what I saw Sunday (also, I'd like to see him on a dry day - he'd probably do 1 or 2 special things). I hardly noticed Zomer to be honest, and that was disappointing, as before last week I thought he might be worth promoting after Garland's injury to see if he can hold up a forward spot. I still think it may be worth a shot but we have time to decide.

I would LOVE some of the drugs you are on. Could not be more off the mark with your assessments. Was that genuine or are you trying an yze magic tactic to stimulate discussion? I sincerely hope it's the latter.

Midfilders need to contribute on the scoreboard
pringle replied to Deano74's topic in Melbourne Demons
That's not entirely true. I recall yesterday at least one instance each when Bruce, Jones and Brock all had chances from around the 50 and none of them got close. All other sides have a few who can put goals through from these areas. We lack those types. -
I wrote too early. 3rd qtr just finished. 13.3.81 to 6.5.41.
-
3 qtr time casey reserves lead by 34. 12.3.75 to 6.5.41. A bit of rain around. It's cold. Only the 2 demons I think. Healy and McNamara.

I'd be really happy if the season finished tomorrow... No more injuries for 2009. Bring on 2010. I'm distraught that Garland is injured. And I expect more injury pain to come for our youngsters. We have a curse upon our club. I don't know who cursed us, but it started with Prymke and it continues to this day. Anone that looks like he could be a champion will ultimately lose his best development years to some ridiculously freaky injury... Fact... Edit: I'm on the juice Newton and could be a bit emotional...
