Cal Twomey has said that this year will see a record low number of draft picks used. Other media outlets (Herald Sun, ESPN) have said the same thing.

It's shallow.

There are no standout top talent like other years, like a Harley Reid (2023) or Sam Darcy, JHF, Nick Daicos (2021). There is a real lack of key position players. The WA cohort is reported as the worst its ever been.

2024 was reported to be a stronger/deeper draft with good key position players but was also reported that the there was no standout top picks. That worked out fine for us and all I care about is that our top two picks this year are at the top end before the more speculative picks come into play.

I'm really looking forward to see who Jason Taylor will pick. I think the only kid I dont really want is Schubert as he isnt a need.

Also intrigued to see if we trade up for Robey. I think the price of the trade might be too much though.

I hate to tell you but we need a key forward

I don't know if Schubert would hinder any of our key forwards, that's a bit harsh. I think we will move up the ladder I think we can finish anywhere between 7th and 12th. If we don't we can always try and pick up a midfielder in that draft. It's easier finding midfielders than key forwards in the draft.

Sorry I’ve butchered the reply and don’t know how to fix it but anyway it wasn’t a knock on Schubert I was just talking about how when you play 4 tall forwards at Casey who are all young it can stunt there development and I hope your right but I’d still draft a mid rhis year as I still don’t think butters would entertain the thought of us

Butters isn't coming to MFC and we'd be dumb to get in that fight. Port will match too so it will be a trade, not FA.

We should continue our good work and concentrate on wooing Humphrey, even though he's a longshot too.

Crafting our draft selections this year on the basis of them being available next year, ie not taking a mid, would be crazy stuff.

We should be throwing everything at free agent Ben King too. Bring them over together.

Yes, there's definitely no harm and possibly some benefit in offering King a monster contract too because GC wouldn't be able to match but would have to pay up big to re-sign him and that would help in the Humphrey chase.

There are always mids in the draft but not so many key talls. I'd have Schubert for one other reason he's tough, Grlj isn't. Why do you think we have no chance with Butters? I think your all wrong. Port aren't in a premiership window like Gold Coast it would be harder to get Humphrey and\or King than it would be to get Butters over.

Aiden Johnson is tougher than Nick Daicos but ...

Butters will get paid an enormous amount wherever he goes and yes he'll probably go to a team vying for a flag. That's not currently us.

Humphrey is a longshot but we may be able to offer him better terms than anyone else and he might like us from our respectful attention this year.

Grlj is actually a fairly tough competitor from all I’ve seen and willing to put body on the line

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
